Thoth- 5 of cups-disappointment

The Thoth-5 of Cups- Disappointment.

Many people inappropriately term some tarot cards as "bad" and others as "good" which is the two-dimensional thinking of our culture, but has nothing to do with Tarot. This is assuredly errant thought as the Tarot is about multidimensional conscious energy and its movement as "your multidimensional life" and what some call "negative" cards, are really aimed to form positive actions.

The 5's, which have often been termed as bad or as the "death suit", are really the necessary disruption of the placidity of the 4's. Your inner-self is telling the outer-self it is time to move! This is also true for the 5 of cups. Emotional disappointment makes us fragile (the 5 glass cups), and vulnerable. Like the murky sea in the background we become depressed and then angry, as the orange/red sky. We are now off balance (the askew star) and feeling uprooted (the lily pads with falling lotus blossoms). The transformational aspect of disappointment is shown by the universal sign of the butterfly (the roots of the lily pads in the shape of a butterfly), and as a butterfly we are rejuvenated and released from the cocoon of past emotional bondage. One can only be disappointed because that had previous expectations. Living the Now, is about accepting the moment as "eternal self" and not expecting a phantom future.

However, there is trouble here as astrologically this card is attributed to Mars in Scorpio; Mars is the planet associated with vitality, assertiveness and dynamic activity. Scorpio is the sign of depth; thus disappointment is felt deeply "to the core" here. The 5's are under the influence of Geburah, the 5th Sephiroth-Severity. Therefore, this is not a trivial disappointment such as not getting the right color of car, or a cake turning out uneven, but a real stinging disappointment that in the next 5 weeks or 5 months has been or will be experienced. There could also be 5 years of disappointment or disappointment that goes back to a period 5 years ago or even disappointment that has been experienced deeply when you were 5 years old and is still influencing your present emotional state. All of these meanings are determined by where the card lays in the reading. However long, it's now time to transform your emotion into a free butterfly rather than a "worm" in a hard cocoon of disappointment. Stuff happens to the just and unjust alike and by releasing disappointment, we can then turn anger into a personal ambition to create more motion in our life! This card states, “Release the past, for that is a dead place, fly forward into the sunny now!"

As I have previously stated, Geburah, the 5th Tree of Life Sephiroth, that rules the four 5's, may be severe but she brings a necessary corrective in our lives. Severity corrects by tearing away all that is useless thought, and emotion; all that is outdated, unproductive and thereby, stunting our motion towards transformation.

In this Universe most of us understand physics 101 and the first law of thermodynamics that states there is only one energy that we can't create, nor can we destroy it. We can however, transmit and transform that energy. Transformation is a process of deconstructing and then reconstructing that which is envisioned, thus what seems to end is merely change towards a great motion/action.

Transmitting is done sexually (Mars and Scorpio) or in some form of intimacy and/or communication, where we are in communion with someone or something. Such as the intimacy of healers. Or shamanistic rites, or the universal sexuality of electrons transferring charge from positive to negative. The flow of this vital force is often called love, as such we could say that the intimacy of the negative pole as attracts energy from the positive pole of a magnet proves love as "The Law of Attraction". But being Spiritual beings who operate a sensual body, we know Love is more than just an energy flow, it is a communion of multiple attributes that are even more apparent when a physical Spirit-Mind- Body equilibrium is present, such as, a human/homo sapiens sapiens union. To the enfleshed Spirit, intimacy is not just physical touching, tasting, smelling, hearing or seeing, even though those are usually involved; Intimacy is where one Auric Field blends with another; where at least, one of female force to a male force are united and creating a third force. Energy weaving into a new pattern for both parties. A multiplication of 7 dimensions weaving with another 7 dimensions (we all have 7 light bodies, called the Aura), becoming 49. These 49 are really a numeric or gemantic 4+ 9= 13 and Key 13 is the Death Card, which means a "Spiritual Transformation".

However wonderful energy in motion is, it also has an end or transformation as it flows only from point to point. That would be the second law of Thermodynamics where"...all things proceed from order to disorder", so a Master Weaver of Self, would see the disorder in Self patterns, and deconstruct them and reconstruct a new order of Self which is an emotional reconstruction of Self-identity/awareness. Here's where Geburah steps in to assist us, she makes us view the discord, and as a corrective, we can now remove the old and build the new harmony. As a master of creation, we must know emotion (energy-in-motion) as a willed action rather than a spontaneous reaction to an outside event.

The 5 of cups is also known as Lord of loss in pleasure. Here the planet Mars is in Scorpio. The angels of the Decan are: Livoyah and Pehilyah. As the 5 of cups, Geburah is influencing the Creative World of Briah. Hence, Severity influencing emotions.

By now you may know that the Alchemical Element-Water is unconsciousness, and a severe situation is sensually presented in the 5 of Cups.

The once full cups are empty, implying loss of that which is loved, Geburah is fiery of nature, and still water is totally at odds with this active force, thus causing a disturbance and loss of pleasure. This card, if supported by the accompanying cards, can even mean death of a loved one. The inverted pentagram represents the triumph of matter over spirit and where disturbance arises in the middle of ease. The Homo sapiens sapiens is the Soma, and/or body, the HuMan/Horus/Adam Khadmond, is the "Heavenly Man" and/or God-Mind. Hu is a Mandarin word for "god" and Man, comes from the Hindu word-Manas, meaning "mind". Hence, HuMan is a depiction of the "God-Mind" that is Horus in Egyptian-Thoth tarot, and/or the Adam Khadmond of Western Qabalah. We are the Psyche of Spirit, the "god-mind" that operates a homo sapiens sapiens in out name of "I AM". We all begin identity with that name. I Am... also builds our self-image and motion of our energy in the moment. So if "I AM Sad", we built a new emotion (energy-in-motion) for the moment. "I Am Happy", sends our energy into the opposite direction. Life isn't about "truth", for it is about imagination. Energy-Mind-Image. The caveat behind the 5's is to "Be the image you were made to be (god-mind) not the one you were "trained" to be (slave-mind)".

The Tarot of The Spirit- Five of Water-Spilling:

The Tarot of The Spirit- Five of Water, is a warning about "crying over spilt milk", much like the mundane meaning of the Thoth card. Here, you may also feel that relationships are impermanent and transient and that your love has all run out. This is because you rely on "outside" lovers, to imply your self-value. Hence, on the 5 of Water card, we have 3 spilt cups, as if your "cups are empty", but there are also 2 cups overflowing with light/love. It is a must, to rely on our inner love between Spirit-Mind-Body for a proper balanced life. Besides, if we don't value our Sacred Self (S.M.B.), how can we expect to show value to others? To give love, one must have love. Love of Self, is to Know Self and understanding that Self is a collective of everyone and thing; a multidimensional composite of I AM. Hence, SElf is all that you will ever know and will ever see. "I AM Love". is a proper and insightful statement that creates, rather than "I seek love". For "to seek" is to declare you don't have it and you are creating a lack of Self understanding.

On the Spilling card, we see the dark pyramid of the past; a pyramid one has built up over time, a "dream of our Life". It has lead one to this moment and is a roadmap for the future. Depicted, are three spilled cups that are pouring out energy-in-motion and/or the water, wine and blood of life. A gold band encircles the rim of the central cup, implying that it is the gold wedding band from which the foundation is draining. However, at the bottom of that cup, there is shown one's purity of heart, in reflection. This indicates the a positive outcome is eminent. The 3rd Sephiroth, Binah, the trinity goddess, finds her own heart that represents the eternal reservoir of Self Love. Here she finds understanding, but that understanding is cut off from relationship. For a Dream of Self, has been broken and one often thinks they are the Dream rather than the dreamer. New dreams arise a butterflies from old dead dreams. Therefore, all around the perimeter the dark pyramid rains the flowing light of love.

The way out of this dark pyramid, is to see it as a road, step over the spilled cups of phantom futures, and take the first step towards a bright future. Here, you emerge upon the top of a lighted hill and the Love of Spirit-Mind-body, a union you call "life", is full of warm and bright potential easy seen as a future panorama.

When the 5 of cups or Five of Water, is thrown during a reading:

  • The querent has been or will be experiencing emotional disappointment for 5 weeks or 5 months.
  • Usually implications of relying too much on others for love, rather than loving themselves.
  • Here, there is a certain crying over past events, an experience of grieving over what has been lost or unlearned.
  • Emotional discord as one begins to adapt to loss.
  • This is a card of regret, loss and separation. The corrective of Geburah is being applied here, and it is the beginning of recovery where one sees the need to learn something new.
  • When this card is thrown you may want to release past patterns of disappointment either with the Scorpio people in your life and/or in the next 5 weeks or 5 months be no longer willing to hold onto past disappointments and will make a conscious decision to let them go.
  • Disappointment.
  • Regret.
  • Frustration

When surrounded by negative cards:

  • Bitterness.
  • Remaining in crisis.
  • Desolation.
