Thoth- 7 of cups-debauch
It may seem such a large step into the negative after the 6 of Cups-Pleasure. However, both are astrologically Scorpio, but instead of Scorpio exalted in the Sun as in the 6, the 7 of Cups places Scorpio with the planet Venus and Venus is ill dignified in the sign for she is the Goddess of Love and now she is in the lovely Scorpio house of Sexuality. In such an influence, Venus becomes a very "loose woman". There is also the fact that Debauch is profaned pleasure.
Venus is associated with Copper as her metal. Therefore, she is all “external splendor and internal corruption" which is called vertigrist. Such superficiality in a deeply emotional, martial and watery sign as Scorpio destroys any altruistic tenancies, turning the amiability of Venus into a grosser sensuality, such as addictions. Thus in the 7 of Cups, the influence of Venus is violent, and becomes intense physical passion, which unless gratified, will become hatred. This passion is so unbalanced that even when such intense physical passion is reciprocated, it will be stormy to the extreme. It may also end in tragedies and treacheries.
Such extreme violence of feelings, may also end in poor health, since no matter the physical strength of the person, the emotional strength of internal greedy desire is even stronger and may eventually lead to dangerous excess. Therefore, debauch, is an appropriate title for the 7 of Cups.
The number 7 refers to the 7th Sephiroth- Netzach (Victory) the ruling Sephiroth of the group/cultural-consciousness and is the number of the Goddess (Water), Venus is the Goddess of Love, redoubling the influence of the number 7. As most of us know by experience, when loving desire goes into physical overload, especially when it is accompanied by others of the same passions, excessive passion becomes dangerous excess, from which some never recover.
In the homo sapiens sapiens case, Passion must belong to the Higher States of Conscious rather than physical bodies as is explained by the very word Human; the word Human Means God-Mind and the High Vibrational Desires of God (The Divine Creative), burn away the lowly desires of the pleasure seeking animal body. This momentary expansion of mundane senses beyond the body is temporary unless the flesh is trained in the tempering heat of Tantric, or Gnostic rituals. The Passion that Created a Universe of Self, is too much intensity for the self-absorbed brain, whose universe is all about "my feelings"!
To carry forth this idea of excess, the Thoth Deck 7 of Cups displays poisoned lotuses that have become tiger lilies. The cups are iridescent, (dissolving in the indolence), and are arranged into two descending triangles, interlaced with the larger lower cup-showing a greater lower influence on the emotions, as it floats in a slime covered morass of putrefaction.
The Thoth Deck is almost an "evil reverse" image of the Six in the reflective world of matter; Zealotry, fanaticism, hysteria, nymphomania are such "evils".
The 7 of Cups, is a wholesome reminder of the fatal ease with which a Sacrament, such as the "Flesh", may be profaned and prostituted simply by losing one’s balance with one's soul, and straying ever so slightly from the middle pillar (Balance of Masculine and Feminine). Thereby making the holiest mysteries of Nature become the obscene and shameful secrets of a guilt ridden consciousness. Netzach, is that green Sephiroth on the lower illustrated Tree of Life.
Green is the color attributed to Venus, the planet of Netzach. Love, feelings and instinct, the Group Mind, Nature, and the Arts, all radiate from this Sephiroth.

Netzach is the first Sephiroth of the astral triangle (7-8-9). the "fluid light" of the Unconscious and is the first energy intelligence to make up the personality of the individual.You may remember that I stated that the Personality is made up of the Four Alchemical Elements, each of which are represented by the lower Sephira, in the familiar sequence of Fire, Water, Air and Earth. Netzach is Fire, Hod is Water, Yesod is Air and Malkuth is Earth.
Netzach is the lower form of the fiery Yod of Chokmah that is reffected from Geburah through Tiphareth. This is the formula for Yod Heh Vau Heh, Malkuth being the final Heh, because of the "fall" which is really a condensing or "downsizing" of self.
In Netzach, normal waking consciousness of the student, must deal with the Astral Triangle of the fluid Group Mind and the component parts of the Personality; after all, we are not of the Personality, it is of Our Soul's Nature! Personalities are software programs that are created to operate Hardware, in this case, Wetware and are supplanted in the brain to manipulate the physical body as the Psyche's/Soul's Self-in-form-action. However, if your personality was made for you out of the illusions, delusions, and ambitions of an outside "Authority", then you haven't a clue who is operating the body. Not only who did the coding but as you don't know the code and language that went into making the software your body is operating from, you can't find the memory of where it came from! However, it is not important where it came from, it is however, important that you realize you have been indoctrinated by "pleasure/pain" training and that your will hasn't been operating your body. Yet again the axiom of Qaballah: "Above all things, know thyself!" rings true!
The most important part of knowledge initiation is to observe the layers of lies, that your personality is constructed from; removing layer after layer of false you, until the real you is shining true. This "Garbage in" is called the man-made or culturally made persona and the "Garbage output" is the dysfunctional action of "seeking yourself" in the eyes of your peers, or of authority. You are already approved of by Life----you exist, you are approved of and your Software for operating the Hardware, was already created by the Higher Self, that is "the Soul".
Often, Mystery schools use a set of Tattva exercises as a type of "controlled daydream" (guided meditations), intended to bring the student into direct contact with the subtle Elemental realms immediately underlying the material sphere of sensation. Often, I bring those Elemental realms into sensual manifestation for my students, all of which is necessary to prepare the student for more advanced
techniques of skrying with Tarot Cards.
It should be understood, that the astral realm beginning with Netzach, is a fluidic, non-solid creative realm where everything begins in illusion/dream. It is the place, where our Formative consciousness can experiment with image, such as children role-playing, in order to comprehend in a later stage of growth, the actual manifestation of being "that". If done with controlled will, this is a boon to any creative endeavor on Earth; if taken as rote, all hell will break loose on earth!
The Astral, although seemingly magic, is not a Master of your personality! Nor is anything that you contact in it! The Astral is the Mind's Malleable substance to create with, not to be created by! Most " Medium-Channels" just channel astral persona's, and live in an illusion of devotional thought, not allowing them to see "holy' delusions. There are also the "channelers" who channel past personalities of their Soul, the Collective of Personal Experience, of personalities past and present.
Let me explain what few wish you to know: A god is a dominant Consciousness on its Plane of Action. Every one of the 10 Sephiroth, is a demiurge and/or a collective layer of the One Mind. The Soul or Psyche is composed of the United cooperation of these energy intelligences we call "gods", which co-operate the Manifestation of Information, (in-form-action) to achieve the mutual goals of the cooperative. So, you, are a Great Group of Ten dimensions of Self, who should be working as One Group Soul of your individual Tree of Life; A One Authority/Author. The fact that you are not, is because you've been mentally separated from the reality of your divinity! This was done by the manipulation of your imagination, (media/words/propaganda) by "The few who wish to rule the many" or in common vernacular-bullies. Such constant repetition from peers, media. bullies and institutions of indoctrination, becomes habitual and automatic and is even enforced in your dreams (auto-suggestion)! The Mentally fluid Astral domains are the beginning of your image formation, on earth. And by giving you "nightmare" stories of how bad your personality and natural body are ..........you forgot both are "good/god enough" to be the top predator of this domain of Self!
We all must return consciously to the Astral and clean up our I AM-software! Hence, meditation is recommended as a way to clean up the detritus of "garbage in", that keeps us from performing as the proper I AM of the Soul.
Therefore, when we are dealing with Netzach, we are dealing with understanding a particularly difficult State of energy conscious. Netzach is where both the Macrocosm (Greater Self) and Microcosm (Lesser Self) meet. Thus we are dealing with the understanding of the entire race patterns of human kind, and patterns of individual persona. But if that isn't enough, we must understand that this dichotomy is in itself an illusion! For there is only One Mind and the homo sapiens sapiens body is the Sensual Input to that Mind in the realm of Malkuth.

The Tarot of The Ages- Seven of Cups, is also displaying an image of debauch, where a sacrament is profaned, by cultural interpretation, not the act itself. Displayed here, are a male and female Mayan, engaged in a sexual act, a sacred act of union. What is profaned here is the fact that both seem to be intoxicated by the fluid in the cups making the sexual act an addiction to pleasure making, i.e. , using intoxicating substances to stimulate erotic pleasure can be interpreted as escapism . Most of the cups are now emptied, and the last 2 are being emptied upon the naked personage of the female, forming a flow of serpentine image, which is a symbol of "sex force". The Lotus of the Goddess, are turned into Tiger Lilies, just as on the Thoth Card.
It helps to understand that Pleasure is not good nor bad, until it becomes the driving force for being. Then it becomes the "authority" in one's life, making it "bad", for it can only end in self-identity-destruction. It is best to not pursue pleasure; instead, just accepting the pleasing moments of the day by being Pleasantly- Present. I have found great pleasure in Knowing Myself, which makes the day an pleasing action of Self- Knowledge; in other words, I own the day. My presence is enough, for I am not pursuing a day of escape from the "mundane" or from the fears of the survival mind. For my body/Survival consciousness, is not running to find a filler for the "hole in my self-identity"; I know who I AM. I AM Spirit, the lover of mind and form. I am the result of the Divine Marriage of the Anima and Animus in the honeymoon suite that is the homo sapiens sapiens body. This marriage of the Creatrix / Creator (One Mind) and Created, fills the heart with a pleasurable personality that cannot be found "outside "of self. Hence, any sexual act is not in a pursuit of pleasure, instead, it is the pleasing dance of the Divine Creative Harmonic that is 0=2. In other words, I AM Pleasure, I don't need to seek it. There are "3 in the house", the trinity- house being my body. So what I Am is the Spiritual-I and the Mental-Am and the Sensuality needed to be Present on Malkuth-Me. However, when our original personality, created as Self-In-Form-Action by the Psyche that is a Soul, is rejected so that we can "fit in" and/or avoid the emotional pain of rejection from the herd; we reject ourselves and try to become something everybody loves or that pleases everyone. To say this is a futile pursuit, identifies the least of the problem for it leaves us "outside" of ourselves, looking for the treasured self that we rejected. Hence, we always look for saviors, lovers and/or the Self-Made master to help us find ourselves, even though we aren't really lost.
If your true self was lost, you wouldn't be breathing right now. What has happened the identity of the Soul-Self, has been covered in a caul of lies; layer upon layer of lies. In other words, the Sacred You has been profaned by the propaganda of the Patriarchy and/or cultural lies meant to keep you a follower of an outside authority. The process begins in profaning the body which sensually places you "here". It is shameful if naked, and/or "happily present". Be embarrassed for it is deemed not "perfect" by those who control the identity of beauty. For those who wish to rule the many have learned that Individuality must be covered in layers of denial, and made "ugly", so that you can be ruled as a "group". The Wolves have learned to feed the young lamb an indoctrinated identity, so that they can use them for their own pleasure as a herd of "sheep". Here desire, becomes evil when one is trying to fill the "whole" left in the identity by being alive only in yesterday's and only seeking immortality by group acceptance. I Am the Eternal Now. Is the Truth about Self.
"Above all things, Know thyself" and you will see that you are already the Whole Self, without "holes" in its identity. Believe it or not, The Heavenly Human, and/or Adam Khadmon of Qabalah, is already you, but often not realized as it is an I Am, hidden under the multi-layered trappings of social lies and the futile thought processes of "seeking pleasure". Adam Khadmon is not a male sex nor a female one, it is both whose union creates the Heavenly Human, and/or the Psyche that is Horus/Christ.
When the 7/Seven of Cups- is thrown:
- The querent is being cautioned about the apparent Victory of Denial.
- There is a suggestion of deceit, promises unfulfilled, illusion, and error.
- Slight success may be experienced, a minor victory so to speak, but not enough energy to retain it.
- The querent may be experiencing drunkenness, wrath, vanity, lust and promiscuity or even violence against women; a violence which is not limited to the male sex.
- This card bespeaks of selfish dissipation.
- Deception in love and friendship.
- Let it be said, this is a card of passions run afoul because of too much fantasy and denial.
- Fantasy.
- Unrealistic attitudes.
- Foolish whims.
- Profaned imagination.
If ill defined by surrounding cards:
- Desire.
- Determination.
- Strong will power.
- One who knows to drain the swamp of past desires.
- Intelligent choice.
- A goal nearly attained.
