The Tarot of Eli-Minor Arcana: Thoth Tarot- 5 of Swords-Defeat & Tarot of The Ages- Five of Swords

Western Tantric and Qabalistic tarot card comparisons.

The 5 of Swords-Defeat occupies the position of Geburah, the 5th Sephiroth on the Tree of Life named SEVERITY. One may ask, why is there a need for such a nasty- Intelligent-judgmental- corrective force if we are the Child of The Divine Creative? One can call this Mother's aspect of "tough love", for this Severity is easily explained as cutting away the unworthy bits that profaned the original you; the original child/soul that she envisioned. What many fail to understand, is that all the definitions given you, by your society, belief systems, experts, leaders and cultures are not you, because YOU HAVE TO BE KNOWN INTO EXISTENCE BY YOUR DIVINE CREATIVE! In other words, you have been already created out of the information of the Self. All is the Self, as One Energy, One Mind and/or I AM. You are an "I Am" self-reflection of the One.

It has been said that truth is made manifest, which means when data becomes in-form-action, it is proven. Therefore, you never came seeking your truth, nor to find out who you are, the Soul already Knows that! By putting knowledge into form, the Divine Creative made you manifest! You are already Defined into being, not a being who seeks definition; for this planet and this cosmos, are not a courtroom; rather they are a workplace where information becomes intimate in-form-action! You are an image of I AM who proves definition by making it manifest! You give definition to things, so that they may be cataloged, for purposes of self-awareness and used as communication. Ideas, when understood, are what you build into things, therefore thoughts are definitions used to define the idea but understood idea, is information and proves itself in in-form-action. Geburah, is an aspect of the All Mother Goddess-who is Binah in Qabalah and Binah, is the 3rd Sephiroth-Understanding. Form her, we are known. Therefore, Geburah, helps us remember who we really are, and not what we pretend or believe ourselves to be. However, we have been "divided and conquered" by indoctrination and dogma and our identities are cloven by fear of being ourselves.

The 5 of Swords, is known as Defeat, or Lord of Defeat. Being that Venus is in the house of Aquarius here, the normal disruption of Geburah's strength, is not the cause of disaster! This is because weakness of personality, is the cause of the 5 of Swords disaster! A weakness brought on by pacifism, and enfeebling sentiment; maybe even the treachery of social peer pressure.

The hilts of the swords form the sinister image of the inverted pentagram; where the body fears have conquered the will by the treachery of profaned sensation brought on by the "pleasure-pain" training of the the Patriarchal Society. This is because, feeling fearful, is often more sensual than feeling willful, since the ever present doubt brought into belief by indoctrination, keeps the will from collecting into force.

When looking upon this card one notices that none of the hilts are the same, implying many different fear weakened thoughts assaulting the blue Rose of Wisdom, that was at once whole in the 4, is now all cut to pieces in the 5. Wisdom is scattered to the winds of emotional defeat and blood of self-torture and the poison of shame drips from the thoughts/swords.

The 5 of Swords is Geburah in Yetzirah, a severe Mars influence towards war, is now in the Astral World. Yet, Mars is the consort of Venus in mythology, and mythology is not a story telling a lie, but rather a story relating a truth, so there is also suggested a vulnerability of capitulation here. The Blue Rose of Venus (Wisdom), which is also the Rose of the Cross, can't take the buffeting of the Martian assault. Along with the 9 and 10 of Swords, the 5 is one of the most destructive events in the deck. Here, loss, defeat, failure where contest is decided and finished against the person.

Yet we must also defeat the "patriarchy within", that has indoctrinated our brains and therefore, become our personality. When that exorcism is achieved, we experience the 6 of Swords-Science. this is the "holy hexagram" that establishes our Spirit-Mind-Body-Trinity of Self, that is now undivided and working in in-form-action as one I AM ME-the Divine Persona of the Soul/Horis. Therefore, defeat can become a freedom caused by letting go and letting the Soul rename you as it removes the "names of man" and/or worded propaganda that we think we are. This requires us to apply compassion, reason and discipline, for we are born of the Original Will that is called Eheieh-meaning I Will Be. Hence Will is your Original Identity! The Soul Knows who you are, and wove a lot of light and harmonic frequencies of energy to make you. You are therefore, worthy!

The Tarot of The Ages-Five of Swords- depicts defeat as well. Here one is howling his anger to the winds, as another, on hands and knees, bows his head in lamentation. Above in the gloomy sky, circle vultures, awaiting the inevitable end. One has nothing to lose, all is gone. Hence, now would be a good time to stand up-for you've got nothing to lose; nothing to hold you back.

When a young child, who was defeated by his impatience, he wailed at his teacher to help him , his teacher replied, " If you wish to speak to me you must stand, for I will not kneel to your weakness." And I have stood eversense. This is the message from Geburah as well. For when one stands, even when all is lost, The", All" returns to them . For we all began as the "Will To Be" and that Will of Spirit can never be defeated for it fears not death, the foundation of all our other fears and when our fear is defeated, one sheds all emotional burdens and walks lightly on the earth. To live a life of fear, is to be a walking-dead, to remove the shroud of fear, exposes the Truth of I AM Me.

When the 5/Five of Swords card is thrown during a reading, it implies:

  • Usually caught in the fears of the past.
  • They are experiencing a self-defined prison of negative, self-defeating beliefs.
  • Here is defeat on a mental level, bringing humiliation and weakness.
  • The suggestion here is to give up fighting, swallow your pride and acknowledge your limitations, and then proceed in a new direction. We are only defeated when we stop seeking another way.
  • So there is no 5 week or 5-month period here, since it is the querent's own mental negativity that is involved here, and they could change perspective at any time.
  • Conquest.
  • Defeat.
  • Destruction of others.
  • Adversity may arise.
  • Revocation.
  • Infamy.
  • Dishonor.

When ill defined by surrounding cards:

  • Uncertain outlook.
  • Chance of loss or defeat.
  • Weakness.
  • Possible misfortune befalling a friend.
  • Seduction.
  • Burial.
