The Tarot of Eli-Major Arcana: Dreams of Gaia Tarot-Key 15-Abundance and Key 16-Destiny & Thoth Tarot- ATU 9-The Hermit.

Western Qabalistic Tarot Card Comparisons.

The Dreams of Gaia Tarot-Key 15 Abundance, is related to the Hermit -ATU 9 of Thoth Tarot. Truth being, the Hermit can be every Major Arcana Card, for he is another way to be "the Fool". The Hermit is traditionally related to Virgo, the Virgin whose symbol is wheat and abundance. Hence, the Abundance card displays, the cornucopia basket, fertile growth of animals and plants, and even mineral growth. There is a Dragon in the background, who happens to symbolize Spirit, the fire breathing serpentine power that is in all animal and plant life. This "inner dragon", is the inner-spirit on which introspection concentrates, and from whom abundance is received. The sun rise, and the night sky, are also seen in the Thoth Hermit card, as darkness, and the lantern of the Soul. On the ground beside this hermit, is a magician's wand, for the inner world is the home of the Magus, another card related to the Hermit.

The key words related to the Dreams of Gaia Abundance Card are: Abundance, Consciousness, Giving, Receiving, Energy, Love and Appreciation. When we spend all our days living as a reaction to the outside world, we become "self-poverty", an impoverishment of Being. Your consciousness, may seem to be outside of you, as it is always looking outward at the outer world and reacting to what is perceived as if it has something to do with yourself identity. Truth is, your consciousness is inside, driving the body as would a driver of a car, whose attention is outside of the car, via windows, but also a good driver who pays attention to the inner part of the car, by reading the gauges of operation and thereby, having faith and contentment that the car will go where it is need to go. These gauges are focused on because they show the driver, the car's health, which isn't from outside. Woe to the driver who never or very unfrequently, pays attention to the gauges...oh you know these drivers, for their car is the one that is often at the side of the road with its hood up (or bonnet up, for you English readers).

Abundance, is a state of contentment not experienced by external factors, it is an inner state of faith in Self. Self, is inside, and it is the observer who acts. It is a wealth of knowledge and fertile in its expression of I AM. Only by going inside, through the acts of introspection and meditation, can one truly view their Mental Health. "I ain't" is mental poverty. It is the companion of "I Can't", or "I am told not to" or any thought that stops your exploration of Self. Self is I AM, their never was such a world as "can't-ain't-or "told not to". It is I Am... with many dots behind it, for you are A Free Spirit, who manifests its own Vehicle for Sensual Intimacy with Creation. Creation is Imagined and to be Understood, it must become Form. But what good is Form to a non sensual Creator? One who cannot feel, taste, touch, smell or hear creation; only sees it. For I-sight is the only sight of the Mind. When "I"sight becomes, Eye Sight, Taste, Touch, Smell and Hearing, one is now a lucid dreamer; an intimate creator, who can enjoy its creations.

The Rigveda contains the Nasadiya sukta hymn which does not offer a cosmological theory, but asks cosmological questions about the nature of universe and how it began:

Darkness there was at first, by darkness hidden;
Without distinctive marks, this all was water;
That which, becoming, by the void was covered;
That One by force of heat came into being;

Who really knows? Who will here proclaim it?
Whence was it produced? Whence is this creation?
Gods came afterwards, with the creation of this universe.
Who then knows whence it has arisen?

Whether God's will created it, or whether He was mute;
Perhaps it formed itself, or perhaps it did not;
Only He who is its overseer in highest heaven knows,
Only He knows, or perhaps He does not know.

— Rigveda 10:129-6[9][10][11]

The Inner you whose "inner world of Dreams" is now experienced as an outer world of "things", is a wonder! We know through quantum theory that observation changes reality. and that the physical senses, are very close observation, much closer and therefore Lucid, than that of a "dreamer" who lives outside of their dream. Hence, who knows you? Only you do through your "Dream of You", and by being lucid in that dream of Self, you can enjoy the abundance of idea, of "perfect form", of I AM or the impoverishment of I AM only obedient to some outside authority to live as dogma, and indoctrination. All is Mind, and you are not somebody else's Being, but the Spirit being "You" in a Dream of I AM. Hence, you are solitary in your universe, and observe only what is Self. Because of the "Son of God", the Soul/Psyche, each of us a perfect copy of the Creator and/or I AM, who makes Self as a dream under observation. One Mind, many Ideas. Did you know that at one time long ago, I Dea was a Greek , Binah the Qabalistic Mother Goddess of Understanding? In other words, the perfect concept a form could take in the mind of God?

  1. Greek word for idea

    The word idea came directly from Greek to English in the 14th Century, originally in reference to Platonic idealism. An idea was an archetype, the perfect form a thing could take.

    What is the origin of the word 'idea' and where was it ...

  2. idea | Origin and meaning of idea by Online Etymology ...

    idea (n.) late 14c., "archetype, concept of a thing in the mind of God," from Latin idea "Platonic idea, archetype," a word in philosophy, the word (Cicero writes it in Greek) and the idea taken from Greek idea "form; the look of a thing; a kind, sort, nature; mode, fashion," in logic, "a class, kind, sort, species," from idein "to see," from PIE *wid-es-ya- , suffixed form of root *weid- "to see."

So embrace the Abundance of I Am and listen to the Inner Author of your outer self. Author-ity, is just another way of saying Author. Spirit authorized YOU! Not any outside thing, mode, sort, fashion, species, academy, theology or nature. The outer you, is from the Inner Abundance of The Dragon within---the I AM that creates a "ME", as an observation of Self. So get on with you, and get over yourself, for impeccability is what we do!

When the Abundance card is thrown in a divination, it implies:

  • Abundance is a mental state of plenty.
  • Abundance is a feeling.
  • Have faith and self-conviction.
  • Your "rainy day" is today.
  • Determine your goals and reasons, and set intentions.
  • A inner state of contentment not influenced by external factors.
  •  Relax, go inward and listen to the great peace inside-Enjoy yourself.
  • Self built you to enjoy being.
  • Appreciate and be grateful.
  • Generosity ripples outward.
  • The more you give the more you receive.

The Dreams of Gaia -Key 16-Destiny, also represents the Thoth- ATU 9- Hermit card, for our destiny is both universal and personal. Universally, we are to incorporate the entire "Tree of Life" into our self identity. This "Whole Self" is called Adam Khadmon in Western Qabalah. The Dreams of Gaia has its own image of Whole Self, which is artistic license, and a resulting, very beautiful and powerful concept of Self.

Our personal destiny, is following our inner bliss as **Joseph Campbell was noted for saying. Our personal destiny belongs to our Inner Self, a Divine Creative Soul/Child of the Divine Creative. The Hermit within is a journey of Introspection, which sets our outer "life journey". The outer authority of mankind's world does not build a peaceful world, for there are many who wish to rule everyone else's destiny, and therefore, war over controlling the minds of the people. The inner you is your only true "Author-ity". Since Observation changes reality, how you observe yourself, is your real world. Self is all there is, and all there ever will be, for it is all within the One Mind, that all intelligence comes from...the I AM. Many en-slavers bespeak of "freedom of choice", and yet give no choices other than the enforced law they control. This is called propaganda, and when one lives and/or identifies self as propaganda, there is no inner peace, only a constant obfuscation and contest exists.

**Joseph John Campbell (March 26, 1904 – October 30, 1987) was an American Professor of Literature at Sarah Lawrence College who worked in comparative mythology and comparative religion. His work covers many aspects of the human experience.

I AM Me, is a God statement, not a cultural, nor theology, nor statement of country, place or thing. It is the statement of a creator, who authorizes itself. It is a ***Psyche created by the One Mind, a Creative Self that sees Selves, and/or multiple ways of being I AM. You be one of those Divine Selves of One Self, i.e., a Soul who has divine license to imagine itself as a Form of I AM, called a "Me". So take up your license to "be self", dust it off and get on with you! For that is your true destiny! Seek by following your inner bliss, do what you are causes happiness, not doing what you are told to be for that causes only inner conflict.

I AM Spirit-Mind-Body, a Trinity of Creative License "to be" whatever dream of Self that I Wish. How good of an artist whose creative license is to design self as it pleases you, are you? Well you exist, so obviously your art of being I Am, is good enough for the Divine Creative. However, being yourself, will disturb the authorities and their brain washed minions, so outer peace, is not what is to be sought. For if your presence "piss off" the brain washed, and the Patriarchy who is the propagandist, you are doing something right. Trusting the Soul that you are, having Faith in your creation, brings a great inner peace, that the outer chaos of rulers cannot disturb. The Divine has already blessed you as good enough to be It-Self, for truth is made manifest, not spoken! Therefore, the worded identity of yourself that is controlled by the Propagandist, is a total obfuscation. Only you can be the Truth of I AM Me. Your destiny, is yours to proclaim, and belongs to no one else. Therefore, once again the Qabalistic Axiom of: Above all things, know thyself, rings true. For Self is yours to decide. Self is all you will ever know. Only when the Will-(spirit)Mind (imagination)-Body (Vessel of Self) walk in rhythmic steps of I Am, is there a sense of peace and/ or harmony in the Self- Trinity of I AM ME. Destiny then becomes an art, created by the creative license of "freedom of choice" granted to the Soul, by the Divine Creative.

***As most of you know, psyche is the Greek word for soul. It's also the Greek word for butterfly. If you have a protagonist in a story whose name is Psyche, you might expect that she will go through a major transition and crisis.

THE MYTH OF PSYCHE - peace

When the Destiny card is thrown during a divination, it implies:

  • Your destiny is to become whole and connected.
  • Your destiny is to lead a life with meaning and purpose.
  • Step inside and explore heart and self-consciousness.
  • Discover your gifts and talents.
  • Break the chain of outside authority.
  • Remember your dreams. (keep a dream journal).
  • Sometimes the most important destiny remains hidden.
  • Overcome the trials and obstacles.

The finest thing in the world is knowing how to belong to oneself.

-Michel de Montaigne, Of Solitude

The Thoth Hermit card represents the Universal Principle of completion, contemplation, and introspection. The Hermit symbolizes the shower of the wise way, who lights the way the way of wisdom in the experiences of life and is an invaluable inner resource for assisting us and others in our daily lives.

The 3 headed dog, who is the Greek Cerberus, guardian of the underworld, signifies the part of our nature that things are complete and/or Time, as one head looking behind in the past, one head is looking into the present and one is look forward into the future. The past and present, are considered before we move our attention forward. Cerberus, also represents the dark inner and unknown parts of ourselves that we should explore and incorporate before wholeness of self can be experienced.

The burgundy cloak is the Egyptian symbol of blood that represents the inherent honesty and integrity (virtue) within all of us. It pays to remember that we inherit the great Wisdom, Integrity, and Virtue of the Divine and through introspection and contemplation we can "Remember our Divinity".

Astrologically, the Hermit is in the house of Virgo (the wheat in the background), the sign that represents attention to details, organization, and beauty. The egg wrapped in the serpent, is called the Orphic egg and symbolizes the ability to give birth to new spiritual and physical forms.

THE HERMIT-ATU 9, is known as the Path of Yod on the Tree of Life, and connects Tiphareth (Sephiroth called: Beauty) and Chesed (Sephiroth called: Mercy). In other words, the Path of Yod connects the Christ-Buddha intelligence known as the Soul, to the Architect of Manifestation that is Chesed. This is the self-sustaining point of primal beginnings in the Universe. It is the coming of the Light of manifestation through the Microcosm; the manifested Universe in direct contact with the Source of All. The Original I AM.

The Path of Yod, is from the Demiurge out of darkness and is known as the Intelligence of Will. The Hebrew letter Yod, means Hand and according to the text Sepher Yetzirah, Yod is a simple letter that is attributed to sexual love. (Needless to say, sexual love and hands do go rather well together...as if I could resist that!)

The letter Yod is also phallic in shape and is considered the Male-Fire (Will)which rushes out toward the Female-Water (Unconsciousness-Intuition). These meanings seem curious at first, since the sign of Virgo (the Virgin) is attributed to this Path, giving us the understanding that the Hermit is to be ever-virgin, pure and totally innocent.

  1. The very word, Hermit, comes from a *Greek word meaning desert, the place where extreme ascetic monks lived in walled up rooms with one window. Which seems to add to the very mystery and solitariness of the Hermit figure standing alone, holding its own source of light. Reminds me of the Christ as the "Light of the World" .

This image of the desert is a compelling one, as it is conceptually a vast expanse of earth, seemingly as vast as the Ocean. Binah, the Great Mother is often called the Great Ocean Mother Mari, and is seen in the image of the dark, deep, endless waters of the Universal Collective Unconsciousness. Thus, we can envision the desert as a conceptualization of crystallized precipitation out of the Vast Ocean of Binah....which is called "The Dark Light" or Abyss. It should be noted, that the Higher the card is on the Tree of Life, the more important it is that we let the card suggest such images as they will. So once again I heartily suggest scrying the cards as an aid for deeper understanding.

The same intelligent energy suggested by the FOOL card, also expressed the HERMIT, as the wise old age of the Child (Daath- which means Knowledge) and the virgin beginning of a new sequence...From Macrocosm to Microcosm. Here the Microcosm is seen as the purity and innocence of the Macrocosmic Fool/ I AM, that is transformed by its "passing through" the Ocean of Binah. In other words, the purity of idea, transformed into form by the Understanding of Binah, the Mother of Consciousness., where the concept of Me is added to the I AM. When we look at the HERMIT card, we see an Old Man, and nothing of the Child, yet they are one and the same, a concept maybe best understood by meditating on the image of the Serpent that eats its own tail.. for life is ever young by recycling itself in organic matter.

THE HERMIT also represents communication between the Higher Self of Tiphareth, and the Spiritual Self of Kether, i.e. The Rauch and the Yechidah as they are known to Qabalists. The Hermit is called the first of the three great initiatory cards, LUST, and THE CHARIOT being the other two. However, the experiences of all three of these initiatory Paths may be gained on the Path of the High Priestess (middle pillar), the one that goes straight up from Tiphareth to Kether, crossing the Abyss and its devastating isolation to instate the experiences of Divine reconciliation through isolation.

Of the Hermit, the descriptions are many, but it must be remembered that this Key-9 Card is primarily about union, representing the first point of awareness of the Higher Self of the Supreme Spiritual Self, a union that is often explained in the most erotic of imagery as it is a copulation of Intelligence; an action from which the Microcosm is born.

On the Tree of Life, Tiphareth is the Objective Solar Logos, the center of objective energy produced by the Sephiroth- Chesed (Demiurge) as a direct link of the lower to the higher. Since the Paths are subjective, the Path of Yod, is the subjective link of understanding, is on the Hermit. Simply because if we are to understand the Transitional Energy, from Demiurge to Logos, we must Travel the Path of the Hermit, rising above Tiphareth toward Chesed, in order to subjectively view the Logos center! In both Hebrew and Greek Metaphysics, Logos means 'Word", depicting vibration Power. The Greek scholar, Heraclitus, described the Logos as a "spermatic; a Divine Fire (will) which stimulated and maintained order.

I hope I clearly established the fact that The Path of Yod (Hand) which is THE HERMIT card, is the Path of Spiritual Fire into the Microcosm (Microprosopus). The Yod is the All Father, Chokma and the PATH OF YOD, is the manifestation before the Abyss which is related to the Logos (Word) that is objectified as Tiphareth on the Tree of Life. To some the Word, is confusing: However, the Word is that vibratory will/ force which continually stimulates manifestation and is often shown as a serpent or Python. Such stimulation also energizes the principles of form (Binah) which it has produced. Thus Kether, the Crown, the origin of Fiery Spirit, is seen as the One that from itself produced Two (0=2) which refers to the Electric (Male) and Magnetic (Female) forces of the One Energy. There is a lot to wrap your brain around here, but that is mostly true of all the symbolism of the Major Arcana.

Often, the Hermit is related to the Christ figure, but he is better related to the Hebrew pathfinder Moses who led his people across the Egyptian desert. In fact, an early Gnostic sect, The Simonion Gnostics, that had taken its name from Simon Magus, first described in the Acts of the Apostles, that the Logos was objectified as Moses. These second century Gnostics taught that the Book of Exodus was an allegory of the soul being led by the Logos (Moses) through the desert of human life into the spiritual promised land. Many of us of the Western culture, know the story of Moses as a Thaumaturge (Arch-magician), whose staff is a wand of enormous power that can strike water from rock and turn into a serpent upon his bidding. The "Magi's wand", turning into a serpent force, is an allegory that refers to the use of Kundalini (Yod) force by the Adept Magician. This serpentine force is a Sacred Fire that is the essence of the Logos transmitted by the phallic wand; the inner sun that spirals up the spine. To a Tantric, this wand would be called the Divya Linga., Divine Lingam. Other references to Moses and the Sacred Fire, is the told as God interacting with Moses through a burning bush. Making Moses an intermediary or tool of the Supreme Father. Thus, Moses is the Hand of God, which emphasizes the meaning of Yod as hand. In Fact, the hand of the Hermit is open, as opposed to the closed fist which is the meaning of the Wheel of Fortune (see Key 10). The open hand means ultimate Power while also depicting innocence, as an open hand can give or take without the impediments of thoughts or moral restrictions.

The Thoth Deck Hermit card, shows the lone figure cloaked in the Red Robe of Binah (Mother's blood), showing that he is rooted in the Great Mother and emphasizing the motion and activity that is essential to the Yod which is the Intercourse of Chokma and Binah. He flows to She who then conceptualizes energy into form by Understanding and/or Wisdom (Chokma) is objectified by Understanding (Binah). The concept of the Cosmos encircled by the Fiery Spirit (Yod), is shown by the Orphic egg, wrapped in a serpentine image of the spiral energy. Cerberus, the Greek three headed dog who guards the gates of Hell, is tamed by the Hermit and is a willing companion. There is an interesting connection here to the Goddess Hell-Aine, and Her 3 Yoni (Vagina) - Maid-Mother and Crone), but I'll leave further explanation up to the investigative student of magic, as I don't wish to offend the flesh-o-phobes of our dogmatic culture.. oh screw that!

The image of the spermatozoon. Represents the Yod energies in the world even though the staff which transmits sexual force (Kundalini) is totally hidden. Which is not the case of the Japanese ink scroll depiction of Bodhidharma (470-543 CE.), the first patriarch of Chinese and Japanese Buddhism who himself was as a Moses and is shown making a "tent" out of his robe. The Spiritual Fire and wand, of a Magus is depicted in this illustration ...before the flesh-o-phobia of Division-ism became the popular separation of spirit and body by putting the wand as a decorative hand instrument.

I wonder, has it ever occurred to common man, that if you divide the Spirit -Will and Mind from the sacredness of the physical Body, that it only leads to enslavement? It is easily done, just by making Spirit an outside knowledge and event of dogma, and by controlling another's imagination with indoctrination. For instance, Life is being "spiritual", not obeying a religious dogma. Nor are you a "sinner" looking for forgiveness. You are the "Son/Sun/soul of god", dreaming it is a homo sapiens sapiens. Hence, Imagination, is the art of image making, and therefore,your self-image is Self-Made. Let not another, no matter how threatening, make your image for you! For if you do, you are theirs for life and have none of your own. Your Spirit-Mind-Body, are the Divine Trinity Made Manifest.

As Crowley states in his BOOK OF THOTH, "In this Trump is shown the entire mystery of Life in its most secret workings. Yod=Phallus= Spermatozoon=Hand=Logos=Virgin.

Finding out why the Divine Couple of the Universe worked for over 13.8 billion years to build below, in the Malkuth World of Physical Mater, a Divine Image called Hu (Chinese for God ) Man (Hindi word-Manas: meaning mind) i.e. YOU, will help establish Spirit body Union and the axiom "Above all things know thyself!". A lot of Divine work went into the making of you----and a lot of man-made history has been devoted to the Pavlovian process of demeaning your Spirit-Mind-Body, i.e., Self, through the propagandist's use of words, so that you could be ruled by those who can't rule themselves. Something to ponder, as your self-value flounders around in debt-slavery- of worded definition of Self, trying to make "ends meet".

The Thoth Card, THE HERMIT, is the Path of Yod on the Tree of Life, the shape of which the figure is posed on the card. As I’ve prolifically stated the Yod force enervates to keep the world in order, a stimulus that could be described as a fertilization. Thus, the world is shown as barren but with potential, as the Hermit begins his "vibratory Walk' upon it.

Yod is linked with Kether [The Crown] the Highest Point of the Logos, i.e. the Primary energy from which manifestation derives and/or The One Energy that cannot be created nor destroyed, only transformed, and is always shown as a phallus since it is the Cosmic Phallic Force.

The lantern in the hand of the Thoth Hermit represents Tiphareth (Beauty), and makes a metaphysical statement about the nature of Light. Most of us know that everything is made of Stars and of the Light of Stars. Light, being composed of subatomic particles (Protons) is the principle of manifestation, or energy-material on which all Creation is built. The Hermit's lantern represents “His own inner-Sun" and/or the Soul that all self-consciousness comes from. The Fertilizing Light, that makes the barren Space-womb fruitful.

The Hermit represents a glyph on the nature of primal manifestation beneath the Abyss. He is a representation of the relationship between Light and the Sacred Fire symbolized by Yod.

To those who are on a mundane journey where a better credit score is the ultimate quest, this card has mundane meanings in a reading, but as a meditation device, scrying this card will aid in understanding the God Trinity of THE HERMIT -YOD, THE EMPEROR-HEH, AND THE HIEROPHANT-VAU., There is a clue to a deeper understanding in the placement of the letters, Yod, Heh, Vau, on the Tree of Life. The letters work together as a trinity from Chesed (Mercy) to Tiphareth (Beauty) to Chokmah (Wisdom) and back to Chesed. Many rewards come to those who research and study.

When the Hermit Card is thrown during a reading:

  • A short explanation: if this card is drawn, it usually means that knowledge is needed in the querent’s life and having the need to listen closely to the master within. Contemplation, introspection by means of meditation is a method of achieving such a goal of inner wisdom.
  • It is about the principle of introspection, completion and space.
  • This is representative of the deeper marriage of the Divine within ourselves, and is often a message that more knowledge is needed.
  • This is definitely a "above all things, know thyself' message. The Hermit represents the inward search to find personal truth, where despair, isolation, as well as, accomplishments and gains, must be accepted.
  • Also, Personal Integrity, the I AM Me, which is always be true to you.
  • it implies that knowledge is needed, meditation and prayer are to be used to hear the inner self.
  •  A deep desire to follow that which is meaningful and/or heartfelt to you.
  •  Time to gather enough data and information in order to sort things out.
  •  Introspection which may require you to withdraw from others or the usual environment in order to gain the perspectives needed.
  •  A stage in life where Wisdom is sought.

If the Hermit is surrounded by negative cards, it is ill defined and implies:

  • Narcissism.
  • Rigidity.
  • Hardness.
  • Alienation.
  • Bitterness.
  • Hostility towards life.
  • Flesh-0-Phobia.
