Rider-waite-smith- six of cups

The Rider-Waite-Smith Card, staying with a more mundane meaning, shows the beginning of pleasure as flowers emerging from the cups. The card is yellow and bright acknowledging the Sun's influence on this card. The scene of the young man giving a flowering cup to a short older woman, suggests giving of pleasure. Waite, keeping to his lodge oath, shows very little of the Arcane in his cards. Therefore, Pamela Coleman Smith, the artist, was left with mundane pictures that didn't truly convey the deeper arcane meanings. That is the reason Aliester Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris, collaborated to place all that could be pictured into occult or arcane meaning, available in the Thoth Cards. Crowley, never liked lodges, and believe that this "arcane knowledge" of self, should be available to all who dared to seek out their true self.

The Thoth 6 of Cups-Pleasure is a very important and powerful card. This is acknowledge in the original Qabalistic text the Sepher Yetzirah: From the Sepher Yetzirah and the Thirty Two Paths of Wisdom:

In Kether is the Radix of a Golden Glory and thence is there a pure, primitive and sparkling, gleaming golden yellow which is reflected into Tiphareth. This is the first reflected Triad complete. And the sphere of its operation is that of Shemesh, the Solar Light, and bestoweth Life, Light and Brilliancy in metallic matter, and it rideth the sphere of action and of the Sun. And YHVH
Eloah va-Daath is a God of Knowledge and Wisdom, ruling over the Light of the Universe; and its Archangel is Raphael, the Prince of Brightness, Beauty and Life. And the Name of the Order of Angels is Melechim, that is Kings or Angelic Kings, who are also called the Order of
Virtues, Angels and Rulers.

The influence of the Solar Logos-Tiphareth ( Sun of God), in the Mental World known to Qabalist as Briah.

Already we know that Tiphareth in Atziluth (Beauty in Pure Spirit) means Victory after effort, shown as the 6 of Wands, Now we see the 6 of Cups as Tiphareth in the Watery World, (Mental World) as the beginnings of Pleasure.

Noted to be a sign of discrimination, magnetism and hidden qualities, Scorpio, in the 6 of Cups, is like activated Water by Solar influx. Here, Scorpio revels in the Sun, and is likened to a fertile, warm, fruitful Sea or a Spa of Life generating qualities. Being a Sun in Scorpio, and a Scorpio Natal, and a Cancerian Moon, my inner self is a bight pleasure to my Watery World of Self-Consciousness. Bacchus revels in my halls of hearth and heart; I live this card, in a daily Glow of Bright Pleasure. Thus I have no need to seek it-----I am it! And pleasure becomes a state of presence and not something sought .

Of course, in its lower state, Scorpio may sting where the Will directs, however, when the Will resides in Beauty-Tiphareth, Love is the Willful view of life and the scorpion's sting is reserved for those who would demean life with vial actions. So as the Sun activates the Forces of Scorpio, gain or pleasure commences. Implied, without assurance, is that pleasure and gain will build, as shown by the partially filled cups.

Pleasure, being the natural title of this card, is not that of the mundane pleasures of the pain fleeing populace, but of the highest sense; implying well-being, harmony of natural forces without effort or strain but with ease and satisfaction. Yet it does emphatically represent the fulfillment of Sexual Will, as shown by the ruling Sephira, Tiphareth, sign of Scorpio, Planet Sun, and element of Water. It is the raising of the Inner Star and/or Kundalini by ritualistic sexual Tantra; A communion of fertile forces, that makes all life possible and enhances the pleasure of being alive. This is the "Christ Light" within, a burning of pleasure that is felt rather than easily defined.

When the 6 of Cups-Pleasure or the Six of Cups, is thrown during a reading, the querent is experiencing:

  • Emotional pleasure, in a period of 6 weeks or 6 months of giving to and receiving  pleasure from others.
  • A period of innocence and taking great pleasure in one's childlike qualities.
  • An orgasmic rush of feelings, a wave of ecstasy that even when sad feelings are being actively expressed, the release feels pleasurable.
  • Sweet memories  of the past, as past efforts bring present rewards.
  • Well being, harmony of natural forces without effort or strain.
  • The "adorable Fire", a flowing of deep spiritual warmth.
  • Ease and satisfaction on a deep inner spiritual plane of pleasure.
  • Note: foreign to the idea of this  card is the gratification  of artificial or natural desires, as it is pleasure understood in the highest sense.
