rider-waite-smith-King of Wands

The Rider-Waite-Smith- King of Wands, projects the image Crowley avoided in his Battle King- Knight of Wands card. Here a passive King sits upon a throne holding a leaf sprouting wand. The sprouting leaves, depict vital life/sex force. The little salamander at his feet, the salamanders on his cape and the red gold color of his remnants, are the only implication of his rule over fire. The blue cloth around his neck and shoulders, is the color of the Blue Sophia, Greek Goddess of Wisdom. Wisdom being the name of Chokmah the second Sephiroth that rules over the Kings/Knights.

To many students, the sexuality of the Supernal Triangle, in which Chokmah and Binah reside, can be totally confusing. For Chokmah, is a Hebrew noun for the word Wisdom and the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, Sophia, yet it is depicted as masculine force. Binah is the Mother Female Divine principle, yet she is also attributed to the planet Saturn who is Cronus the "Grandfather Time" of the zodiac. The Ancient Wisdom said, "...there was no Father God until She named Him Father." This is because, She is the mother of all form, thus definitions belong to her. The Sexuality of God is the Attraction of Opposites, electro-magnetic and not necessarily the sexuality of any species. It more like the blending of colors, for instance, when red and blue unite, we get purple.Red and blue are both annihilated in this communion process, yet purple rises from the union, giving a more powerful expression of the two who become one. It is the human body that gives sensation to this blending of power, and I am personally grateful for the experience.

Chokmah, the Second Sephiroth called, Wisdom is the Father God principle and is the first idea of Maleness. Binah, the Mother God named Understanding, is the first idea of Femaleness. Here God begins the action of Sexual attraction; of the electric (male) and magnetic (female) actions of the Universal Creation that is energy expressive-Male and energy receptive-Female.

This Divine Sex is a hard one to explain to the self-absorbed who think sexuality as "pleasing moment" of egoistic-conquest or profaned superiority. However to those of us who have felt the deep and powerful Inner forces of Spiritual Vital -Energy flowing from the masculine to feminine and/or Anima and Animus Sexuality are usually unable to mentally rationalize it. It is stunning and absolute attraction, like lightning striking. It isn't needy, or manipulative, it is as if two solar-magnets of opposite polarity just "slam" together without resistance of any kind. It is so powerful, that there isn't any other person in the world....one just knows this is the only mate. This purely energetic attraction is beyond rational thinking and the brain is stunned by it's lack of control over the fiery situation.

The Kingdom of Heaven, is all around you, and it is built from the attraction of opposites. To understand this powerful attraction we really have to re-think sexuality and understand the attraction of Chokmah and Binah. The Universe is created by this often volcanic and overwhelming activity of "Adorable Fire" Union.

Thoth- Knight of Wands

The Thoth Deck Knights are the Kings, in many other decks. To Crowley, a king siting on a throne did not depict the Active power of a the 2nd Sephira- Chokmah-King, thus, he calls them Knights, which are armored Battle Kings, on mighty-chargers, undaunted and victorious in battle. The Knights represent Yod (hand) forces in each suit. The Yod is the Radix, and/or Father and commencement of Material Forces. All other forces are implied here, and as ideas they develop and commence in the Knight/ King. As if volcanic, the Force of the Knight is swift, violent action, that also moves on swiftly. Thus the effects of this force soon pass away.

THE Thoth KNIGHT OF WANDS: is the Lord of Flame and Lightning, king of the spirits of Fire, King of the Salamanders. To Native Americans, he would be Grandfather Thunderbird. The last Decan of Scorpio and the first two Decans of Sagittarius are attributed to this card. The Knight of Wands is Specific Fire in Primal Fire on the Tree of Life.

Fire in a alchemical sense, represents the active-vital Spirit Force of Movement that is in all Motion and yet it is also the tempering fire that melds together opposites for the construction of something more than either one. Spirit Fire is Sexuality; the type of sexuality that annihilates both parties and creates a phoenix out of the ashes.

{Tarot card significator birth wheel form the book: The Qabalistic Tarot-by Robert Wang]

The Crowley card of the Knight of Wands is all about active force, a leaping black charger mounted by dark knight, depicting the Dark Fire of Foundational Dark Energy, that all Visible Light comes from; that visibility is depicted as surrounding flames. The knights crest is a horse head, implying the influence of Sagittarius, and he is in armor implying the qualities of the Spirit Fire that does battle for us all. The same Ace of Wands, is the Wand in His hand, implying that he is the vehicle for the Fire Force.

The characteristics of this Powerful Knight, are qualities of activity, such as, fierceness, impetuosity, pride, impulsiveness, swiftness in unpredictable actions.

If negative, he is evil-minded, cruel, bigoted, and brutal. In either case, his swiftness gives him no recourse to act otherwise so he is ill fitted to modify his actions according to circumstances.

Great power, is often seen as arrogance by the weak of conviction, so this person is either loved or hated, without "gray area" acquaintances. Those who doubt themselves, will be inclined to follow and thus secretly fear or hate such a powerfully active Spiritual Being who is unconcerned with how others react to them. Also this will be a person with a Great Libido, as Spiritual Fire and Sexuality are invariably linked, this is also a contention amongst the weak who serve reaction rather than action, thus fearing the mortality of their flesh. Those who serve comfort, as in "to avoid pain", will practice all manners of character assassination when speaking about such a powerful spirit being. For example, Prometheus, the Greek God-man who gave the "Fire of Zeus" to mankind, became Lucifer to the Christians.

WHEN THE KNIGHT or KING OF WANDS IS THROWN DURING A READING, it implies;

  • A spiritual evolution is taking place at a deep core level. It is as if the past personality is fuel for a new phoenix- self arising from the flames
  • Experiencing the conviction of Spirit with much inner and outward movement of energy; the manifestation of leadership skills.
  • Positive male power, complete with the ability to focus on long term goals but with rapid movement that is able to handle complex situations.
  • Strong minded and able to dominate others by force of will.
  • A master of wit and charm, great sense of humor and warm generosity with a strong liking for fun. Can just about persuade anyone into anything.
  • A mature male whose inner and outer being are in mutual agreement and balance.

If ill defined by surrounding cards (Thoth) or reversed (Rider-Waite-Smith), it implies:

  • Very Impersonal force without the conscience of the personal.
  • May be a highly empowered spiritual being. Which doesn't necessarily mean he has your best interest at heart. Spirit is Pure Mind, and doesn't see things in a personal way.
  • Emotional coldness.
  • Too much emphasis on mind.
  • Dazzling ambiguity.
  • Fickle.
