rider-waite-smith, eight of wands

Again, the Rider-Waite-Smith 8 of Wands card is laid out for more of a mundane reading or divination. On a blue sky and lush landscape background, Waite displays 8 leaf sprouting wands, as if suspended or falling. Again, the phallic force of Mercury is shown in the shape of the wands, and the swift movement of growth is shown in the sprouting twigs and leaves. Obviously Waite, still holding to his oath of secrecy, didn't spend great effort in designing this card, and it is simplicity itself. Since, the wands are flying , swift energy can be determined from this image. Hence, a swift outcome to the issue of divination is implied.

Thoth-8 of wands-swiftness

Mercury in Sagittarius, rules the 8 of Wands-SWIFTNESS-card. Mercury being masculine force is representing the stabilizing of the Fiery Energy, shown as electric arrows of Sagittarius radiating outward from a central point. However, Sagittarius is unstable in Mercury, so the balance of energy is rapid and fleeting, as arrows are from a bow. .

Here we have the Intelligent Energy of Chokma (Wisdom) being swiftly brought down as the message of the Original Will. Sometimes good things come to all who wait, but all who wait often get only what the swift have left behind. This is a figure eight, the lemniscus, a symbol of the infinite magic of this Universal Collective Mind. One must keep an "open mind" to receive these communications from Mercury, the messenger of the "higher mind". At this point, the 8 of Wands is impelling us to "act swiftly".

The number 8, also refers to the Sephiroth #8, Hod, which is the Splendor of electricity, speech and light. Hod also represents the individual mind and bright reason. Thus we have the illustrated card showing light-wands turned into electrical rays that are sustaining or even constituting the vibrational energy of physical Matter. Hod is one of the Sephira in the Astral Kingdom of Yetzirah, which is a fluid electromagnetic spectrum of vibratory energy. This may be unseen to us, as we only see the Visible light spectrum which is less than .4% of the entire electromagnetic spectrum that quantum physicists call the Multi-dimensional Universe. Therefore, form is created in the Astral fluids , by the unconscious mind in Yesod (Foundation) the lower Astral Sephiroth. before it is seen here in the lowest Kingdom of the Astral crystallized light that we call Malkuth (kingdom) or Earth. However, the whole of the Astral kingdom seeks to deceive. Not because it is bad or wrong, but because we view astral images with the perceptual vulnerability of our own individual mind. Subjecting these images to the judgment of reactionary-experience rather than fact. We are particularly susceptible to deception in the alternatively bright and murky sphere of Yesod (Sub-conscious). However, it is in the Higher state of Hod, that we begin to understand our perceptions.

On the Thoth 8 of Wands, the central illustration of the "As above, So below" dual pyramids displays a rainbow above them, depicting the restored Universe of shinning light which deals with the maxima, and the seven colors of the visible spectrum exhibiting interplay and correlation.

The Thoth card represents the high velocity energy that is the master-key of modern mathematical physics showing no flames, for they have become the electromagnetic spectrum where the fiery- electrical energy has become a intelligible form. Thus the 8 of Wands- card is all about swiftness and/or rapidity.

When the 8 of Wands is thrown during a reading, the querent shall or is experiencing:

  • A hasty communication (letter or message) within a 8 day, or 8 week period that is quickly passed or expended.
  •  Too much force is being applied and expended in a very rapid rush. Violence may result but short in duration.
  • Love of the open air and is courageous, bold,  and  a lover of field sports----as long as they don't last too long.
  • The querent is generous, subtle, eloquent and yet a somewhat untrustworthy personality; untrustworthy because they don't stay in one place too long.
  • Rapidity and Swiftness, Spontaneity seem to govern motivation.
  • Lots of energy to solve issues, if the querent acts fast on the solution.

If ill defined by the surrounding cards (Thoth) or reversed (Rider-Waite-Smith), it implies:

  • Vehemence.
  • Hastiness.
  • Superficiality.
