Warning: The Manara Tarot is not a tarot deck for "flesh-o-phobes". So review a "fairy" deck, or some such fluffy deck, so that your delicate ignorance won't be disturbed.
The Manara Tarot-key 1-Il Bagatto-the Magician
The Erotic Tarot of Milo Manara has chosen to make the magician a female scientist who has constructed a crocodile-like mechanical, with a phallus. This may seem like some kind of erotic tomfoolery: However, the Crocodile is a symbol for Power that has been used throughout the Mediterranean cultures. And the very fact that the Magician is the "first ejaculation of will", an automatic expression of the "Big Bang", a mechanism, if you will, that we call the "universal movement". The First Emoted Frequency of the Hermetic Qabalah's Kether, which is Eheieh in Hebrew and means, "I Will Be". An erect phallus is the perfect image for such an exclamation of the "First Shout " and/or expression of I AM that many call the "Word of God" or the Logos.
There is also a reason for the expression of satisfaction on the Woman's face. After all this is the Will that has created "Other", the most beloved of the One. Here, she represents the One Womb, who is the Creatrix of the Divine Creative. "Other" is "form", i.e. image and is the "most beloved" of the Spirit. The magician, and/or Magus, is the one at the altar, who creates with, Fire-Wand/Rod, Water-Cup-Womb, Air-Sword-Mind and Earth-physical mater. One also must remember the old Greek admonition of "There was no father until she named him Father". Referring to the Creatrix Hera.
The Magus or Magician is the path of Beth, meaning House, and is between Kether (Crown) and Binah (Understanding) on the Qabalistic Tree of Life, making it the transition (Phallus) path of the One Undefined Energy, and the Great Organizer, Mother Binah. Thus, the relationship that establishes the meaning of house, Beth, as that of the dwelling place (Womb-Temple) where Spirit resides before "falling" into manifestation. In other words, where the egg of Akasha gestates after it is stimulated by the "First Vibration" (serpent force) of the Father.
In this case, it is appropriate to call the Magus that which builds the House. In other words, the Magus directs and encloses the One Spirit (Spiral Energy-Vital Life Force)) which is symbolized by THE FOOL tarot card. The Supernal Triangle of Kether, Chokmah and Binah is represented by Tarot Cards whose activities are only separated by a degree or less. Thus, the Aspects of the Magus and the Fool are intricately linked. For those who wish a glaring example of this degree of Separation it is about as much as the Testes and Phallus are separated in a human male, albeit the One Great Being (Note* to a Qabalist a "Being" is an Immortal Intelligent Energy").
Thoth-atu 1-the magus
Scholars of the first five books of the Bible (the Pentateuch), point out that the letter Beth is the First letter, as the book of Genesis begins with Bereshith --commonly translated as "in the beginning". Interestingly, Fabre d'Olivet translated Bereshith as meaning "At First, in principle", knowing that Beth symbolizes the "Beginning of the Beginning"; The Will of the One. Thus, it is the First Matter of the Alchemist, the Philosophic Mercury and or "First Principle".
Because to create a beginning one must create an end, the Magus also represents the key polarities of creation, Life and Death. This process is indicated by the figure eight that is lying on its side (lemniscus or lemniscate) and/ or Ouroboros, the serpent that eats its own tale, as both represent the closed circle of One Energy, begun by the number One -Beth, acting on the Zero-Aleph, THE FOOL. The Lemniscus symbolizes the Act of Turning upon oneself as a Twisting or Spiraling-Thus creating Male and Female infinite circles of Force in the ONE Energy (one unbroken line) and the Sexual Dance of God/Goddess; the Divine Creative. Because there is no Action in the Crown or Mind of God, until Will disturbs it, the Magus chant of," I am the will. I am the way. I am the wealth; I own the Day." is most apropos to this card.
[For an entertaining story of the first relationship between the letters Aleph and Beth, I would suggest one reads the Zohar, a Qabalistic text.]
[Mercury by John W. Kelly]
However, even though the Magus is associated with Mercury, the Messenger of the Gods, it is not all active. In fact, it is both active and passive, as it is both that which Transmits and that which is transmitted, as any phallus is. The Magus represents both the One Life Energy which when transmitted becomes the Prima Materia (First Matter or Semen of Will which is commonly known as "I Will Be"). Here an understanding of the fact that the Magus (Mercury) is the "message bearer" of the Gods, meaning he is not Himself the Creator, only the bearer of his Will much as the semen is the bearer of the genes of the Father and a catalyst for the "beginning". Thus, the Magus is the ejaculation of will. (The whole Supernal Triangle is the action of the Divine Phallus and Womb.). The Wand in The Magician's hand (Golden Dawn Deck) symbolizes this phallic action, showing that the Magic(k) is merely the Transmitted will of the Greater Being that is the Supernal Triangle or Trinity.
The Roman, Mercury, is the Greek Hermes and the Egyptian- Thoth, all represent the same deity, the amalgamation of their qualities having become inseparable in modern esoteric literature.
Hermes was always associated with words and had stone statues of representing him at crossroads in ancient Greece. These consisted of a head and phallus on a stone pillar. The Word and Phallus association makes sense as a messenger must simply state the cause of the one who has sent him. Then there is the Egyptian- Thoth, who created the Hieroglyphs, which developed the necessary means by which a message could be transmitted and recorded.
The companion of Thoth/Hermes, was shown as a dog-headed Ape (Cynocephalus), representing words themselves, and their potential for deception and misunderstanding. Thus, we have Cynocephalus, included in the Thoth Deck card, laying at the feet of the Magus.
Not only do words affect the Will, as cause and effect, but they also transmit ideas from person to person in the same way that the Magus transmits the idea of Self-Creation-"I Will Be"- of the One -Kether. The Transmitted idea, from The Magus, Fertilizes the ONE Womb, (Understanding) that is the Great Mother Binah. Just as words fertilize Consciousness! Thus, the power of Words, is about stimulating the birthing of unconscious ideas into conscious images of understanding, by the Power of Expression, but not necessarily the Truth of Creation, for that Must Be Made Manifest (THE HIGH PRIESTESS-Knowledge)!
Okay, this concept may be so subjective, that it may be difficult to understand, but try scrying the card. Your meditative observation will open your consciousness to the flow of the Collective Unconscious where greater knowledge is stored.
The Simonian Gnostics, followers of Simon Magus, were known to incorporate sexual rituals and magical practices into their religious and spiritual traditions. Simon Magus was an early Gnostic leader and is mentioned in various early Christian and Gnostic writings.
One of the most well-known aspects of Simonian Gnosticism was their belief in the divine and creative power of sexual union. They saw sexual intercourse as a sacred act that could be used to connect with and channel spiritual energies. Some Simonian Gnostics believed that through these rituals, they could attain higher levels of enlightenment and divine knowledge. This is also the belief and practice of the some of the Sufi sects and sexual Tantra and Western Hermetic Magic practitioners.
The exact nature of Simonian Gnostic sexual rituals and practices is not well-documented, and historical accounts of their beliefs and practices come from the writings of early Christian church fathers, who often portrayed Gnostic groups in a negative light. As a result, it can be challenging to ascertain the precise details of Simonian Gnostic rituals.
It's worth noting that Gnostic beliefs and practices varied widely among different sects and leaders, and not all Gnostic groups incorporated sexual rituals into their traditions. Gnosticism itself encompasses a diverse range of spiritual and philosophical ideas, with diverse groups and individuals emphasizing various aspects of their beliefs.
The Sacred Phallus, the Magus is the first expression of willed Fecund force.
To reiterate, THE MAGUS is the Path of Beth (house or temple), and it transmits (The first ejaculation) the idea of Self-Creation of the One from above-known as Kether (Crown). A spoken word is a sound that carries an idea, so the Magus is associated with the First Vibration or Word of God. The First Vibration encloses Spirit, beginning the process of creation, thus encompassing all that is. However, the Phallus is the Wand of The Magus and must be manipulated and/or invoked to ejaculate catalytic force. For all you flesh-0-phobes, the Male is the sacred electric vessel of the Fecundation force while the Female is the sacred magnetic Grail vessel of The Wisdom of Sophia and womb of all creation. The Phallus Wand in her hand fecundates what she has created as an idea and therefore, manifesting it as an expression of the divine "I AM". He has coagulated his energy into a catalytic agent of fecund alchemical earth. She has the sacred vessel of womb that takes his energy and combines it to the egg (orphic egg) which then duplicates itself and becomes a living form. This is sacred to the Divine and should be sacred to us. However, we have the stain of the ARCHON in our subconscious minds that have been brainwashed with the dogma of slave religions and the "divide and conquer" paradigm of separating the body from spirit and mind (a sinner who dared to seek knowledge). He was the hater of the human being and desired to enslave it forever to his arrogant false claim as being the one God and that man must bow to him and his dogma: Forever enslaving the human imagination with fears of being destroyed by a tyrannical creator. The first step in his enslavement of man was to make him believe that he must devote his life to serve this Demi urge tyrant.
In some Gnostic sects and interpretations, Jehovah or the God of the Old Testament is indeed viewed as an Archon or a false god. Gnosticism is characterized by a complex and diverse set of beliefs, and different Gnostic groups had varying views on the nature of the deity associated with the Old Testament.
In Gnostic thought, the material world, including the God of the Old Testament, is often seen as the creation of a lower, ignorant deity or Archon. The true, higher God is a transcendent and unknowable divine entity and is the Qabalistic Kether. The demiurge, often associated with the God of the Old Testament, is seen as a lower, flawed being who has created the material world and keeps humanity trapped in ignorance and suffering.
It's important to note that Gnostic beliefs vary, and not all Gnostics held the same views about the Old Testament God. Some Gnostic sects had more complex and nuanced interpretations, while others held more dualistic and antagonistic perspectives.
So, while some Gnostic traditions considered Jehovah or the God of the Old Testament to be an Archon, this interpretation is not universal among all Gnostic beliefs.
In Gnostic thought, the Archons are often seen as malevolent or ignorant beings that exist in the lower realms of the cosmic hierarchy. They are sometimes considered to be rulers or authorities who exert control over the material world and its inhabitants. Gnosticism is a diverse and complex belief system, and interpretations of the Archons can vary among different Gnostic sects.
The Gnostics believed in a dualistic view of the world, with a higher, transcendent realm of divine knowledge and a lower, material realm characterized by ignorance and illusion. The Archons are often associated with this lower, material realm and are seen as obstacles to spiritual enlightenment and liberation.
In the Golden Dawn papers, this idea was conveyed by relating the Mercury symbol (planetary sign) to all the Sephiroth, with the exception of Kether. You may note that the Horns spring from Daath, often called the invisible Sephiroth but really, it is the conjunction of Chokmah (Great Father and Binah (Great Mother), a face to face union, The Abyssal Womb and "Lightning Phallus", that creates what is called: The Divine Child. This is understandable, since Wisdom (Chokmah) and Understanding (Binah) conjoin in the birthing of Knowledge (Daath). Here Mercury is placed in the Sephiroth to show further example.
Consequentially the showing of Mercury on the Caduceus, properly places the 4 Worlds, [Atziluth, Briah, Yetzirah and Assiah], that are transitions of the Wand of the Magus, Kether is the Winged Orb at the top. By deeper delving into the Golden Dawn texts, the student will find that the Primum Mobile, Latin for "first motion”, is acting through Philosophic Mercury (Magus) on Saturn-Binah, who is Will to Form or as I like to call her, "The Will to form Being". As before stated, she is the Mother of Form who Understands and the Magus is the Idea of Being and/or Will.
The activity of first motion acting on Saturn-Binah, is words or Vibration and whoever can willfully direct the Vibration of the First Motion, (often referred to as to "Pronounce the word-YHVH") shall command the Universal Force. This Mastery of the Universal motion, is called the "moves-Moves" among certain Native American nations, and/or the "motion within the movement" of the Mysteries. Quantum physicists would call it the "Dark energy that pushes the Universe", while Qabalists call it the Magus.
Dr.Paul Foster Case, in his Book of Tokens, stated that, "all created wills are but reflections" …of the Will that is the Magus. This is an essential ideal of the Mysteries and acknowledges the fact that our Superior Nature (Divine I) acts through the Magus/Will.
In the Crowley card, unlike the Golden Dawn card, THE MAGUS is not holding a Wand, the primary instrument of the MAGICIAN cards; Rather, THE MAGUS is the Wand. He is the Phallus, which Crowley understood. This Subjective Phallus, is not an object. All Objects are formed by Binah, who is Will to Form. There will not be a physical phallus until "...She calls him Father".
Victorian sensibilities have softened the ancient depictions of Hermes as the Herms, that were upright stone slabs with a bust and a very large stone phallus curiously attached to the front of the column. This acknowledgment of "First Motion" is also shown in Lingam worship of the Hindus and or the Phallus- God Priapus of the Romans. Without the Transmitted Will of the One, understanding of an idea, cannot become a Form of Understanding. This is a complex idea, and requires deep meditations on THE MAGUS card, and also a release of Victorian sensibilities, as we are describing the First SEX Action in the Universal Duality. That Action, produced our Higher Self called Daath, Knowledge, who is the Divine Child of the union of Will and Understanding; the Self Concept of I AM ME. Here, the -I is the Will and the Am is the form of that Will and the Me is the manifestation of the Union. Caution: This concept could make your forehead itch! However, any person who doesn't know how to make a phallus ejaculate is in dire need of education. Just as any person who doesn't know how to Invoke the Will of the One, is ignorant of their inheritance.
When THE MAGUS is thrown during a reading, it implies:
- Communication and timing and that all things are possible, with applied Will and understanding.
- There is an implication of the magic of Universal Vital Force traveling through the human body making one in-tune/communication with the most creative and powerful aspects of your-Self; As above, so below.
- Changing the structure of your living situation by focused action:
- Will and focused consciousness.
- An awareness of Power, and possession and communication of the Powers (Focused will that fertilizes creativity in one’s self and others) and Gifts of Spirit (Divine senses).
- Mental resources.
If ill defined by the surrounding cards:
- Lack of communication.
- Lack of Purpose.
- Mental blocks to creativity.
- Fear of Sex.
- Body phobias.
