Thoth Tarot — 8 of Swords: Interference (Jupiter in Gemini, Hod in Yetzirah)

In the Thoth Tarot, the 8 of Swords — Interference is attributed to the 8th Sephira, Hod, on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. Hod is called Splendor, yet this splendor is often superficial — intellectual brilliance without persistence, appearance without depth, and form without enduring force. It represents the mind’s tendency toward cosmetic solutions rather than essential transformation, revealing a lack of continuity in matters of intellect and contest.

Western Hermetic Qabalah- Tree of Life

Astrologically, this card corresponds to Jupiter in Gemini. While Jupiter naturally signifies expansion, wisdom, and good fortune, its influence becomes weakened in Gemini’s duality. The expansive force of Jupiter is scattered into competing directions, producing divided attention and diluted power. Thus, even when success appears possible, the will is constantly disrupted by opposing tendencies.

In astrology, Jupiter in the house of Gemini is believed to influence various aspects of an individual's life. Here are some general characteristics associated with Jupiter in Gemini:

  1. Expansive Communication: Jupiter, the planet of expansion and growth, in Gemini tends to emphasize communication and intellectual pursuits. Individuals may have a natural gift for expressing themselves verbally and might enjoy engaging in discussions, debates, or learning through communication.

  2. Curiosity and Learning: Gemini is associated with curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. With Jupiter in this house, there's a likelihood of a broad range of interests and a constant desire to explore and learn new things. These individuals may excel in education and might be drawn to diverse fields of study.

  3. Adaptability: Gemini is known for its adaptability, and when combined with Jupiter's expansive energy, individuals with this placement may find it easy to adapt to different environments, ideas, and perspectives. They may enjoy the variety and change that life has to offer.

  4. Optimism and Positivity: Jupiter is considered a planet of optimism, and in Gemini, this optimism is often channeled through intellectual pursuits. These individuals may have a positive outlook on life and a belief in the power of ideas and communication to bring about positive change.

  5. Networking Skills: Gemini is a social sign, and Jupiter's influence can enhance social and networking skills. Individuals with Jupiter in Gemini may enjoy connecting with a wide range of people, forming diverse social circles, and benefiting from these connections in various aspects of their lives.

  6. Potential for Scattered Energy: While the expansive energy of Jupiter is generally positive, in Gemini, it may lead to scattered energy at times. There could be a tendency to be interested in many things simultaneously, making it important for individuals to focus on prioritizing their pursuits.

It's important to note that the overall interpretation of Jupiter in Gemini can vary based on the entire birth chart, including the specific house placement, aspects, and other astrological factors. Individual experiences with this placement may differ.

Book of Thoth-by Aleister Crowley

As Crowley writes in The Book of Thoth:

“The will is constantly thwarted by accidental interference.” (p. 207)

For this reason, the Thoth 8 of Swords is also titled The Lord of Shortened Force. Energy is present but fragmented; strength exists but cannot sustain itself. Jupiter’s expansive power, constrained within Gemini’s dual nature, disperses vitality rather than consolidating it.

The Four Qabalistic Worlds

On the Tree of Life, Hod operates in Yetzirah, the Astral World — the formative realm of image, thought, and psychic structure. Here, the decanic angels Vemibael and Yehohel preside over processes of mental organization and correction. Their influence points toward the necessity of restoring coherence to the fragmented mind.

8 of Swords-Thoth Tarot

This condition of interference calls for conscious reprogramming of one’s inner patterns. The Western Hermetic study of the Qabalistic Tarot serves precisely as such corrective discipline. Its central injunction — “Know thyself” — restores the awareness of the I AM as the source of meaning and power, rather than seeking identity through accumulation of external things, titles, or possessions.

When consciousness is directed outward in perpetual acquisition, thought becomes impoverished, rooted in the illusion: “I do not have, therefore I must obtain.” This state of inner lack mirrors the Yogic concept of Neti-Neti (“not this, not that”), a condition of restless negation where fulfillment is endlessly sought outside the Self.

Thus, the 8 of Swords reveals the spiritual dilemma of scattered consciousness: the divided mind weakens the will, yet through self-knowledge and disciplined awareness, the fragmented force may again be unified.

Eight of Swords-Arcane Tarot

Arcane Tarot — Eight of Swords

The Arcane Tarot’s Eight of Swords presents eight slightly varied swords aligned in a single row upon a golden floral background. Unlike more dramatic depictions of bondage or entrapment, there is no visible figure bound or blindfolded. The restriction here is subtle, structural, and atmospheric rather than aggressive.

The ordered alignment suggests containment rather than chaos. Yet the uniform arrangement also implies limitation — movement constrained within defined boundaries. The absence of overt interference shifts the emphasis away from scattered thought and toward internalized restriction. The feeling that may arise is one of helplessness, not because of external attack, but because of perceived confinement within one’s own mental framework.

This card speaks less of fragmentation and more of compression — energy held but not expressed.

Upright Meaning

A sense of powerlessness or stagnation may be present. Circumstances feel restrictive, yet the deeper message is that perception is limiting possibility. It is time to reevaluate assumptions and consider alternatives that were previously overlooked.

You are not as trapped as you believe. The next movement begins with reclaiming personal agency.

Relationships

There may be a feeling of imbalance or emotional confinement. However, you possess more influence than you realize. Progress requires initiative — perhaps an honest conversation, establishing boundaries, or even walking away from harmful dynamics. Courage initiates change.

Career / Finances

Professional or financial expectations may not be unfolding as planned. Dissatisfaction signals the need for creative reassessment. New employment paths, additional income streams, or innovative restructuring may be required. Brainstorming without self-judgment opens pathways forward.

Arcane Tarot- Eight of Swords reversed

Reversed Meaning

A shift in perception is occurring — or has already occurred. Mental fog lifts. A new understanding emerges that restores confidence and movement. The restriction dissolves not through force, but through clarity.

You are ready to begin again, armed with awareness rather than fear.

Overcoming Interference — The Restoration of Will

The solution to this mental obscurity is deceptively simple: focus on one thing at a time and cease seeking happiness through accumulation — whether of possessions, titles, or praise — as a cure for identity dysfunction. What appears simple, however, demands profound discipline. It requires an intense intimacy of Spirit–Mind–Body, a love of one’s own being without reliance on the splendor of words, and a sincere devotion to the work at hand.

Add paragraph text here.

True happiness arises from harmony between the inner and outer self. It is not dependent upon the cluttered cacophony of people, places, possessions, or social recognition. To search outwardly for inner balance is ultimately futile.

Because of Gemini’s dual tendency to move simultaneously in opposing directions, the benevolent forces of Jupiter become shortened and scattered. What begins as fortunate expansion quickly becomes erratic and unstable. This condition creates genuine interference when attempting to concentrate consciousness toward a definite goal.

Yet this state may initially appear promising, for Jupiter’s influence remains inherently fortunate. The impulse begins with great potential but soon loses momentum through misdirection.

Thoth-8 of Swords

Crowley and Harris illustrate this condition clearly in the Thoth 8 of Swords. Two long central swords — symbolizing waking and unconscious consciousness — are crossed and obstructed by six shorter swords of varied design. These shorter blades represent scattered thoughts, fragmented attention, and conflicting impulses. Their reduced size signifies narrowed force, restriction, and diminished power. The image reveals a mind overwhelmed by multiplicity, lacking persistence in intellectual matters and unable to sustain decisive action.

Although Jupiter’s natural beneficence still attends even weakened efforts, the will remains continually thwarted by accidental interference, often arising from subconscious survival patterns. To overcome this condition, one must cultivate discretion, patience, discernment, and persistence. Much of this interference originates in reactive responses to external conditions and identification with the false self-constructed through language and social expectation.

Expectations themselves become obstacles to clear perception, especially when reality fails to conform to one’s projected timing or desires.

The Supernal Triad- the Supernal Source of Will

Will and the Supernal Source

In the Western Hermetic tradition, Will originates in the Supernal Triad as a threefold current:

  • Eheieh (Kether) — “I Will Be”

  • Will-to-Force

  • Will-to-Form

This trinity constitutes the Superconscious or Archetypal World of Atziluth. When Will is properly focused, all three operations unfold simultaneously: intention, energy, and manifestation.

Spirit acts; the brain and body react. For this reason, Spirit is associated with Fire and with the dynamic force of Will.

Focused meditation — including practices such as Tarot scrying — quiets interference and clarifies self-conscious awareness. When Will governs the false ego and directs attention inward, Spirit reveals a penetrating insight beyond ordinary mental processes. This clarity allows consciousness to act rather than react, transforming experience while remaining unmoved by environmental pressures, including the pervasive interference known as peer influence.

The Lesson of the 8 of Swords

The Thoth 8 of Swords reveals a condition devoid of patience and persistence. If the interference of a noisy and reactive mind is to be overcome, one must consciously develop the positive virtues of focus, discipline, and sustained Will.

Otherwise, the environment continually disrupts forward movement, and consciousness becomes trapped in endless analysis — spinning its wheels in the mental mire of its own creation.

The card therefore teaches that interference is not merely external but arises primarily from undisciplined thought. Through self-knowledge and concentrated Will, scattered force may again become unified power.

Thoth vs Arcane Tarot — Eight of Swords (Comparative Synthesis)

Thoth Tarot — 8 of Swords: Interference

The Thoth 8 of Swords shows active interference — scattered thoughts disrupting the focused Will. Here the mind is divided, force is shortened, and consciousness is fragmented by competing impulses (Jupiter in Gemini in Hod). The obstacle is energetic dispersion: too many directions, too little persistence. The remedy is disciplined Will, self-knowledge, and focused awareness that restores unified force.

Core teaching: The Will is weakened by mental multiplicity.

Eight of Swords-The Arcane Tarot

The Arcane Tarot Eight of Swords emphasizes restriction rather than interference. The ordered row of swords suggests limitation, containment, and perceived helplessness. The issue is not scattered force but self-imposed confinement — a belief in powerlessness that restricts movement. The solution lies in changing perspective and reclaiming personal agency.

Core teaching: The mind limits itself through perception.

Hermetic Comparative Insight

Together, these cards reveal two stages of mental limitation:

  • Thoth → Fragmentation of Will (scattered force, divided intention).

  • Arcane → Restriction of Will (contained force, perceived powerlessness).

One shows consciousness weakened by dispersion; the other shows consciousness confined by belief. In Hermetic terms, both describe distortions of Hod — the intellect either divided against itself or trapped within its own constructs. The Great Work in either case is the same: restore the sovereignty of Will through clarity, focus, and self-knowledge.

Unified teaching:
Where thought is scattered, gather it; where thought is confined, liberate it — and the Will becomes whole.

Scrying the 8 of Swords (Interference) in the Thoth Tarot can be a potent method for clarifying one's thought process. Since this card is associated with Mercury in Gemini, it represents an overactive, scattered, or blocked mental state—too many thoughts at once, leading to a lack of clear direction. However, by entering a scrying state with this card, one can directly engage with its energetic pattern and find insight into mental interference, discernment, and resolution.

How to Scry the 8 of Swords

  1. Prepare Your Space

    • Set up a quiet, dimly lit area with minimal distractions.
    • Light 2 yellow or orange candles (Mercury’s colors) one on each side of the mirror.
    • Place the 8 of Swords before you, either propped up at eye level or on a black mirror for deeper reflection. Place the card in a holder, so that it is facing the dark mirror and adjust the candles, so that the reflected image is shown flickering in the mirror.
  2. Enter the Scrying State

    • Begin rhythmic breathing to calm the mind.
    • Use a mantra such as "Mercury, illuminate my mind" or "I seek clarity beyond interference."
    • Soften your gaze and let your vision blur slightly as you stare into the card.
  3. Engage the Symbols

    • The swords in the card form a complex, chaotic pattern, reflecting a mind caught in loops. Ask yourself:
      • What thoughts feel like they're trapping me?
      • Are these thoughts truly mine, or external influences?
      • How can I regain clarity?
    • The central yellow light in the card represents the flickering force of intellect. You can visualize it expanding, cutting through the interference.
  4. Receive Insights

    • Images, words, or feelings may emerge. Do not analyze them immediately—simply take note.
    • If the interference itself manifests (in jumbled messages or confusion), watch it without engagement, allowing it to pass like clouds in the sky.
  5. Close the Session

    • Thank the card’s intelligence and Mercury’s energy.
    • Ground yourself by touching an object, drinking water, or journaling what you perceived.

Alternative Approach: Invoking the Spirit of the 8 of Swords

If you are adept in Hermetic visualization, you can invoke the intelligence of Mercury in Gemini and ask it directly how to resolve mental entanglements. This could manifest as a conversation with a winged figure (Hermes/Mercury) or a geometric unraveling of the swords’ interference.

By working with this card as a mirror of the mind, you allow it to reveal not only the interference itself but also the path to cutting through it.

When the 8 of Swords Is Thrown in a Divination

Upright

The 8 of Swords indicates a fear of change — a reluctance to move beyond a binding or restrictive condition. There may be confusion, mental fog, or the feeling of being trapped within oppressive ideas. Yet this very discomfort is the beginning of awakening.

Change is inevitable. Even when resisted, it approaches. The benefic influence of Jupiter ensures that growth is present within the circumstance. Scattered efforts to delay transition only interfere with wholesome transformation. It is time to stop resisting and proceed forward with clarity.

This card often shows:

  • Confusion or isolation caused by restrictive thinking

  • Fear of stepping beyond familiar limitations

  • Recognition that the old way of thinking is dissolving

  • Loss of faith in outdated beliefs — a necessary precursor to progress

  • “Shortened Force” — energy applied to trivial matters rather than principal concerns

  • Excessive attention to detail at the expense of larger vision

  • Admiration of wisdom, yet misapplication of it to unworthy objects

  • Impulsiveness and uneven balance — ease in some areas, disorder in others

  • Generosity in material exchanges without deep emotional connection

Time indicators may reference 8 weeks, 8 months, or longstanding patterns dating back to early formative years (symbolically “since 8”).

Ultimately, feeling trapped or ashamed signals awareness. Awareness is the threshold of liberation.

Ill-Dignified / Reversed

When poorly aspected by surrounding cards, the same qualities become distorted:

  • Malice or pettiness

  • Domineering or controlling tendencies

  • Mental blocks and persistent confusion

  • Rigid or narrow thinking

  • Avoidance of responsibility

  • Overreaction to minor matters while neglecting essential issues

Here, interference hardens into obstinacy. The will is not merely scattered — it becomes defensive and self-protective.

Hermetic Insight

The 8 of Swords reveals that mental dissolution is not failure but transition. When the old belief structures weaken, the Will has opportunity to realign with a greater purpose. What feels like restriction is often the collapse of smaller thinking.

Where force is shortened, expand consciousness. Where thought is narrow, restore the Will to its Supernal source.
