7 of Disks-Thoth tarot

Thoth Tarot 7 of Disks-Failure and Arcane Tarot Seven of Pentacles.

Fear, Delay, Putrefaction, and the Alchemy of Material Becoming

The Thoth 7 of Disks, subtitled Failure, and the Arcane Tarot Seven of Pentacles both reveal a difficult but necessary stage in the garden of manifestation. Whether the issue is wealth, health, labor, or physical relationship, these cards do not merely announce material loss. They point to a deeper disruption in the psyche’s ability to move Will into Form.

This is the point where growth appears stalled, effort feels heavy, and progress seems delayed. Doubt creeps into the soul like rot in a once-fertile field. In the Thoth Tarot, Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris make this condition unmistakable through the decaying disks, the oppressive atmosphere, and the sickly suggestion of blight. The image does not whisper. It warns of entropy—of structure weakening when fear overtakes persistence and when consciousness begins to turn against its own creative flow.

Thoth Tarot-7 of Disks

Yet this card is not merely about outer failure. It is about fear as a magical obstruction. Fear of failure and fear of success are both distortions of the same creative current. In Western Hermetic terms, fear is emotion turned against the direction of manifestation. It chokes the descent of Spirit into Matter. The garden withers, not because life has ceased, but because the imagination has become divided against itself.

Western Hermetic Qabalah- Tree of Life

In the Qabalistic system, the number Seven corresponds to Netzach, the sphere of desire, instinct, emotional force, and victory. But here Netzach is operating in the suit of Disks, the slowest and densest element. This is not an easy marriage. Desire seeks momentum, attraction, and fulfillment. Earth demands patience, time, labor, and endurance. When the emotions are poisoned by past disappointment, social conditioning, fear, or exhaustion, desire becomes frustration and labor becomes procrastination, self-sabotage, or quiet defeatism.

This is why the card is titled Failure. But that title should not be read as a final sentence. It is better understood as a condition of success unfulfilled. Indeed, this card is also called The Lord of Success Unfulfilled, and rightly so, because it often points to physical non-success, depletion, or exhaustion. The Will has not entirely vanished, but its embodiment is blocked, delayed, or weakened.

Everything is failure until it isn't.

A further occult key deepens this interpretation. There are sixteen geomantic figures, as referenced in Crowley’s 777 and in The Handbook of Geomancy from The Equinox, Vol. I, No. 2. The arrangement of the seven disks corresponds to the geomantic figure Rubeus, a symbol associated with putrefaction and traditionally regarded as menacing. On the surface, this supports the card’s atmosphere of corruption, spoilage, and disturbed cultivation. The field is blighted. The money may be bad. The labor may appear wasted. The expected harvest is not yet realized.

But the Hermetic student, and especially the alchemical student, sees further.

In Alchemy, putrefaction is not merely decay. It is a necessary stage in transformation. It is the sacred breakdown of the old form before purification can occur. In this light, the Thoth 7 of Disks does not simply depict ruin. It depicts the nigredo, the blackening, the decomposition of what can no longer sustain growth. Just as compost enriches the soil, so too does this stage prepare the hidden roots of future manifestation. What seems spoiled may actually be in the process of being transformed.

Thus, the card says something more subtle than “you have failed.” It says: the old method, the old expectation, or the old structure has failed to support your becoming.

Astrologically, the Thoth 7 of Disks is Saturn in Taurus. This is a profound correspondence. Taurus seeks stability, productivity, fertility, and material continuity. Saturn imposes delay, contraction, discipline, and karmic pressure. Together they produce a state in which growth is slowed so that weakness may be exposed. This is why the card often feels frustrating. One works, waits, and still sees little result. But Saturn does not deny for the sake of cruelty. Saturn delays in order to test endurance, refine effort, and build something more lasting.

Saturn in Taurus imagery

The deeper lesson of Saturn in Taurus is that not all delay is denial. Sometimes growth retreats into the invisible before it can emerge in durable form.

There is also an unmistakable Gothic wisdom in the Thoth image. The disks suggest not only decay, but also occult intelligence hidden in darkness. The atmosphere is heavy, but not meaningless. It is the heaviness of a soul being asked to stop, assess, and endure rather than force. Patience and hard labor remain the remedy. The immediate suggestion may be spoiled cultivation or bad money, but the long-term lesson is that perseverance and disciplined restructuring can still produce a more positive outcome.

Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot- 7 of Pentacles

By contrast, traditional Tarot images such as the Rider-Waite-Smith Seven of Pentacles often show a harvester pausing in contemplation. There is disappointment, but also assessment. The question becomes: what must be changed so that the labor bears fruit? The Arcane Tarot Seven of Coins participates in this same current (no green leaves on the vine). It depicts a reckoning in the realm of manifestation—a need to review one’s methods, expectations, and emotional posture toward the work itself.

From a Western Hermetic perspective, then, failure is often a misleading word. What is really being shown is misalignment. The Soul is revealing where fear has displaced faith, where exhaustion has overtaken disciplined rhythm, and where emotional energy has ceased to nourish the work.

Failure- 7 of Disks, Thoth Tarot

The hidden danger is not labor itself. It is fear of discomfort. Many do not abandon the Great Work because they are incapable, but because they recoil from the uncertainty, slowness, and tension of transformation. Yet this card teaches that discomfort is often the threshold of alchemical change. The sacred dark is not empty; it is the womb of re-formation.

The Seven of Disks therefore asks for neither despair nor passivity. It asks for conscious decomposition. It asks you to examine what is no longer fertile, what expectations must be relinquished, and what emotional patterns are choking growth before harvest.

Its lesson is stern, but deeply empowering:
Fear feeds failure, but endurance transforms it.

Picture of " I Am Wealth"

To work magically with this card, the remedy is not panic, but declaration. The “I AM” must no longer be used to repeat defeat, fatigue, or anxiety. It must be used to awaken sovereignty in the material field.

A fitting magical affirmation for this card is:

I AM the Will and the Way. I AM the Wealth and I own the Day.

Spoken daily with intention and emotional force, this declaration helps redirect the current of fear into discipline, purpose, and steady manifestation. Wealth here means more than money. It means vitality, inner authority, creative coherence, and trust in the timing of the Work.

The Thoth 7 of Disks ultimately reveals a severe but sacred truth:
what appears as failure may actually be the dark intelligence of putrefaction preparing the Soul for a truer harvest.

Do not flee the decomposition. Enter it consciously.
For in the garden of the Soul, even blight may become initiation.

Seven of Pentacles-The Arcane Tarot

The Arcane Tarot-Seven of Pentacles presents its coin-like pentacles in an “as above, so below” arrangement: three above, one large central pentacle, and three below. This pattern suggests that what is occurring in the material world reflects a deeper imbalance in the inner world. The dead vine binding the pentacles together shows blocked fertility, halted growth, and the sense that something once alive is no longer being nourished. The black and grey background reinforces the atmosphere of putrefaction, delay, and slow material frustration.

In a more positive light, this card can still point to long-term investments, patience, and eventual growth, but only if steady effort is maintained. More often, however, it suggests low returns, slow development, and the feeling that much labor is yielding too little reward.

Upright, this card encourages perseverance. Stay with your long-term goals, even if progress is slow. The work may feel tedious, but disciplined effort can still bear fruit in time. In relationships, growth may be slow and require compromise, patience, and real labor, yet the bond may strengthen if both people remain committed. In career matters, work may feel like a grind, but continued effort, skill-building, and endurance can eventually bring recognition.

Reversed, this card warns that the time, energy, or resources being poured into a project may not justify the outcome. It asks for honest reevaluation: is the payoff truly worth the effort, or is one clinging to something that no longer has life in it?

Compared to the Thoth Tarot 7 of Disks-Failure, the Arcane Tarot version is less overtly Hermetic in symbolism, yet it carries a remarkably similar message. Both cards show delayed harvest, weakened fertility, and the danger of exhausted effort.

The Thoth card is more explicit in presenting this as putrefaction, Saturnine heaviness, and success unfulfilled, while the Arcane Tarot frames the same condition in a simpler visual language of dead growth and slow returns. In both cards, the lesson is the same: patience, honest assessment, and disciplined endurance are required if one is to transform stagnation into eventual gain.

When the 7 of Disks /Pentacles, is thrown during a reading, implied is:

  • A fear of failure with finances, health and relationships. However, 7 in Netzach is a weak event, and deregulation of the element of earth, so soon the querent's project will be completed if determined to "keep on" and ignoring the feelings of never finishing the task.
  • The Determination to release this fear of failure should go on for within 7 weeks or 7 months. However, this determination must be hard fought, for there is a tendency to abandon labor, and allowing everything to sink in a mire of sloth.
  • Yet again, putrefaction is before the transformation of purification, so this is the point where the "lowest fallen becomes the highest exalted".
  • The implication of this card, is that you shall succeed if you don't listen to the thoughts of failure that are tempting your brain. Push harder, you'll soon succeed.
  • In the next 7 weeks or 7 months, the more rewarding path will be discovered and the period of waiting is over, or you will have to confront your fear of failure in the next 7 weeks or 7 months in order to plant anew and reap a more generous harvest in your future.
  • It is time to move through old fears and self-defeating thoughts of past failures whether they have been experienced in the past 7 weeks, 7 months or when you were 7 years old.
  • Assessment
  • Deliberation of choices, waiting for the right time and right place.

If ill defined by the Surrounding Cards in the layout it implies:

  • Deep-rooted blockages.
  • Fresh start.
  • No opportunities.
  • No success.
