Thoth Tarot ATU XIII: The Path of Nun and the Great Transformation

In Western Hermetic Qabalah, Death is not an ending. It is the sacred law of transformation. The Thoth Tarot ATU XIII—Death corresponds to the Hebrew letter Nun, meaning “fish,” and to the Qabalistic Path that runs from Netzach, Victory, to Tiphareth, Beauty, on the Tree of Life. This path is one of the three great initiatory passages that lead the Personality toward the Higher Self. These three are Art, the Path of Samekh; The Devil, the Path of Ayin; and Death, the Path of Nun.

Each of these paths reveals a different face of the Higher Self. Art shows the alchemical marriage of opposites. The Devil shows the birth of the personality into matter and the enchantment of form. Death shows the dissolution of the false self so that the true Soul-consciousness may be reborn.

The Dark waters of the subconscious

The Path of Nun launches consciousness into the dark waters of the Universal Unconscious. This is the Abyssal Womb of Mind, where the artificial personality is dissolved, purified, and re-formed. To the ordinary ego, this feels like extinction. To the Soul, it is baptism. The false “I” dies so that a greater “I AM” may awaken.

Awakened soul from the dark waters of the Universal consciousness

Nun means fish, and the fish moves through the deep waters of the Great Sea. Esoterically, this points to the First Matter of alchemy: the dark, fertile substance from which new life is born. In this sense, Death is the mercy of transformation. Without Death, consciousness would remain trapped in its own outdated story, clinging to dysfunctional identities, social programming, fear, and illusion.

Nun- the primordial fish in dark waters

The Thoth Death card shows this process beautifully. The dancing skeleton is not a symbol of annihilation, but of movement, rhythm, and renewal. The scythe is the harvesting tool of Time, ruled by Saturn-Binah, the Great Mother who gives form and takes form away. Behind Death is the fish of Nun, and around him are bubbles of new life rising from the dark waters. This is putrefaction, dissolution, solution, and coagulation—the alchemical process by which the old self decays and the gold of the Soul is released.

Thoth Tarot- ATU 13-Death

The Baroque Tarot Key 13–Death expresses this same mystery through a more classical and dramatic image of mortality. Its Death figure reminds us that form is temporary, but transformation is eternal. The Baroque image strips away false decoration and confronts the viewer with the great equalizer: all masks, titles, fears, and worldly attachments must eventually fall before the transforming power of Life. Yet this is not hopelessness. It is liberation. The old mask falls away, and the buried vitality of the Soul begins to rise.

Astrologically, Death is attributed to Scorpio, the sign of intense transformation, emotional depth, sexuality, secrecy, regeneration, and rebirth. Scorpio has three traditional symbols: the scorpion, the serpent, and the eagle. The scorpion crawls close to the earth and represents instinctual survival. The serpent represents the rising life-force, the kundalini or sexual-spiritual current. The eagle represents consciousness that has risen above the lower passions and now sees from a higher perspective. In Qabalistic terms, this is the transformation of survival-consciousness into Soul-consciousness.

This is why Death is also connected to the conquest of fear. The fear of death is the root of many other fears: fear of rejection, fear of poverty, fear of pain, fear of loss, fear of change, and fear of life itself. When the aspirant faces the Path of Nun, these lesser fears begin to lose their authority. The false ego, built by social conditioning and word-hypnosis, can no longer rule the imagination. The personality is reconstructed as a messenger of the Higher Self.

In metaphysical terms, the brain-made personality may be compared to an artificial intelligence. It processes language, habit, memory, fear, and social instruction. But the Universal Collective Unconscious is the Real Intelligence—the greater field of Psyche from which Soul, archetype, and true imagination arise. Death is the transition from artificial self-definition into living Soul-awarene

This is also why the Tree of Life has a Path of Death but does not appear to have a separate Path of Birth. In truth, birth and death are one movement seen from opposite sides. The Devil, the Path of Ayin, represents the birth of the personality into matter, where the Soul becomes enchanted by form and sensory experience. Death, the Path of Nun, represents the return through form into the deeper waters of the Higher Self. One is the descent into embodiment; the other is the return through transformation.

The Divine Name of Kether is Eheieh, meaning “I Will Be.” It is like the sound of breath itself. Spirit is breath. Life is breath. The body is animated by the invisible presence that breathes through it. Therefore, Death is not the destruction of Life. It is the exhalation of one form and the inhalation of another. Reality itself is a rhythm of emanation and return.

Death- ATU 13-The Thoth Tarot

In this light, the phrase “I die daily” becomes a profound initiatory formula. The aspirant dies daily to false identity, fear-based thinking, inherited dogma, and the hypnotic noise of the world. Through introspection, meditation, ritual, Tarot, and disciplined imagination, the personality becomes a conscious Mercury—a messenger of the Soul rather than a servant of social illusion.

The Tar pit of Social conditioning imagery

The Great Work is not the rejection of the body. The body is the sacred Temple through which the Solar Self experiences life as in-form-action. The body allows information to become knowledge. The danger is not embodiment itself, but false identification with fear, shame, and separation. The Death card asks us to remove the tar and feathers of artificial identity so that the original Divine Child may shine again.

Adam Khadmon- the Heavenly human

The Path of Nun is therefore a Dark Night of the Soul. The psyche is stripped of its old desire-nature and emptied of false certainty. This may feel like despair, numbness, or disinterest in the old world. Yet this darkness is not punishment. It is the womb of rebirth. The Soul is being broken down, purified, and reassembled closer to its original pattern: the Heavenly Human, Adam Khadmon.

The old personality says, “I am this body, this name, this fear, this history.”
The awakened Soul says, “I AM Life, and I create lifetimes.”

Thus, Death is not the enemy of Life. Death is the servant of Life. It clears the field, harvests the old form, and opens the gate to a new state of being. The Thoth Death card and the Baroque Tarot Death card both teach that transformation is not optional. It is the law of movement itself. Without transformation, consciousness stagnates. With transformation, consciousness becomes wisdom.

Thoth Tarot- ATU 13-Death

When this card appears, it announces the end of a false condition and the beginning of a deeper truth. It may bring endings, losses, releases, and necessary separations. Yet beneath all of these is the mercy of renewal. The false ego is being dissolved. The Soul is being freed. The aspirant is being called to rise from fear into trust, from survival into sovereignty, and from personality into the radiant Beauty of Tiphareth.

Death is the Lord of the Gate, not the end of the road.
It is the sacred passage through which Life remembers itself.

I AM Divine. I AM Magnificent Life making lifetimes.

The Baroque Tarot — Key 13: Death

The Baroque Tarot Key 13—Death presents a dark-robed figure of Death seated at a granite altar. One bony hand rests upon the altar while holding a delicate daisy. This contrast is important: the skeletal hand represents mortality and the unavoidable ending of form, while the daisy suggests innocence, renewal, and the small but persistent promise of new life.

Upon the altar stands an hourglass, the ancient symbol of time passing through the narrow gate of necessity. The sands of time remind us that all forms are temporary. Beside it, a dead rose vine clings to the altar and trails down to the ground, showing that beauty, passion, and desire also pass through cycles of decay and renewal.

Before the altar rests another skull wearing a crown. Beside it lies a fading red rose. This is a powerful symbol of the death of false authority. Crowns, titles, pride, ambition, and worldly power are all subject to transformation. Death strips away illusion and reveals what is essential. In this sense, the card does not merely speak of physical death, but of the ending of false identity, outdated attachments, and ego-based authority.

Western Hermetic Qabalah- Tree of Life

In Western Hermetic Qabalah, Death is the Path of Nun, the fish, moving through the dark waters of the subconscious and the Universal Unconscious. It is the initiatory passage where the old self dissolves so the Soul may be renewed. Death is not the enemy of Life; it is one of Life’s sacred methods of transformation.

The Baroque Tarot- Key 13-Death

Upright Meaning:
Death signifies a major conclusion that opens the way for a new beginning. Though the process may feel frightening or uncertain at first, this card teaches that letting go of the old creates room for new growth, new wisdom, and new spiritual movement. It marks a necessary ending, a purification, and the clearing away of what no longer serves the Soul.

The Baroque Tarot- Key 13-Death-reversed

Reversed Meaning:
Although I do not use reversed cards in Western Hermetic Tarot, the reversed interpretation traditionally points to resistance to change, fear of the unknown, and clinging to what has already completed its purpose. It warns that stagnation prevents the natural flow of Life. The old must be released, for from Death, new Life grows.

The Baroque Death card reminds us that every throne eventually becomes dust, every rose eventually fades, and every false authority must surrender to the transforming power of Life. Yet from the altar of endings, the daisy still blooms. This is the true message of Death: transformation is not finality, but regeneration.

When the Death Card, ATU/ Key 13 is thrown, it implies:

  • Time, Age, and transformation.
  • Rarely does it symbolize physical death and only if borne out by the accompanying cards, such as the 10 of swords-Ruin-Swords being the traditional death suit.
  • For the Querent, this is the principle of letting go and moving on.
  • A rebirth out of old conditions.
  • A type of transitional metamorphosis which destroys something old to build something new.
  • The Realization of Life Power as it is released from past confines and revitalized by change and regeneration.
  • Psychology of letting go.
  • New opportunities.
  • Rebirth from one form into another.
  • Personality transformation.
  • No more dead weight of the Past.

If surrounded by ill-defined cards, it implies:

  • Resisting change.
  • Stagnation.
  • Inertia.
  • Pain of giving something up.
