The Thoth 8 of Cups-Indolence and/or The Lord of Abandoned Success.
Attributed to this card is Saturn in Pisces. The Angels of the Decan: Vabaliah and Yeshivah.
Here, Hod is in Briah, the Mental World.
Hod is Splendor and the concrete mind; However, with Saturn in Pisces the 8 of Cups, being a Water sign doesn't balance Saturn's energy well. With Saturn in a water sign, a certain amount of introspection, manifests as disinterest with material conditions. The effect, is discontent or a decline in interest in anything. Thus, one's tendency is to abandon success.
The interpretation of the 8 of Cups, is based on the fact that Pisces, is calm and stagnant water that is completely deadened by the heavy influences of Saturn. We know Water, is the Element of consciousness, and that Saturn's metal is lead, so what is going on within one is a deadening of interest, a complete lack of wonder an internal heaviness.
The lotuses of enlightenment droop, for lack of sun or rain. The Sea of the Unconscious mind has become little stagnant pools, in poisoned soil. All the cups are old and broken, symbolizing "an old and worn out" way of thinking. The Sun of Spirit, is a pallid yellowish light barely shining through the leaden clouds of indigo. Therefore, the 8 of cups implies that the mind and emotions on autopilot; thought process is not conducive to expanding and liberating the Life of the person. The blood in the body is moving like molasses. This person needs stimulation!
Not my favorite card, but this dullness of mind, is often necessary to warn us that it is time to evaluate our feelings as we are building against our own movement.* Our emotions have become a stagnant pool, and we'd rather sit and do nothing rather than act. Here is a symbol of depression.
*The numerology number 8 is a number of material acquisition. The numerology number 8 is a building number. It builds things. 8 is a business and finance number that builds companies, institutions, roads, procedures, and other things of value to society. The number 8 is the most material number of all.Number 8 Meaning - Affinity Numerology
However, on a lighter note, this could be a state of emotional retreat and withdrawal. Sometimes, we need to withdrawal and let things settle down to become clear. However this card shows that we have settled down too long, for the clarity has become stagnant water and one has a "what the hell" attitude.
The Tarot of The Spirit- Eight of Water-Still Waters, shows a emotional withdrawal state as well. However, this one seems to be less putrefied. More of a rebuilding one's strength. Here we see 8 cups, in egg shapes, within a cosmic sea. There seems to be a gestation going on, as there are flowers blooming in the cups. Flowers eventually bear fruit. There seems to be a Masonic Apron covering cups; an apron is a symbol of the craftsman, mason, and the magician. Aprons protect the craftsman's clothing and body, while the magician's apron protects the "Moon Center" which is the 9th Sephiroth- Yesod on the Tree of Life. Yesod is the sphere of the subconscious.
The upper portion of the 8 of Waters card, is the encased cosmic mirror. The upper box represents the essence of the 8, where One circle turns into 2 by turning upon itself. The unity of the eternal circle of the One with the straight-edge box of materiality. In this case, the circle is contained in the box by the magical making of the magician's ritual form. Encapsulating the energy of Spirit.
