The Soul Behind the Mirror in the Thoth Tarot

The Initiatory Journey of The Fool, The Priestess, and The Universe

Within the Western Hermetic Qabalistic framework of the Thoth Tarot, the realization that the personality is a reflection of a deeper Self can be clearly traced through three profound Major Arcana keys: The Fool, The Priestess, and The Universe.

These three cards form a symbolic arc that describes the journey of consciousness from pure divine potential, through the mirror of manifestation, to the completion of embodied self-knowledge.

In other words, they illustrate the Hermetic mystery behind the question:

“I AM… as what?”

The Fool-thoth Tarot

In the Thoth system, The Fool represents the primordial consciousness before individuality forms.

Crowley assigns this card to Aleph (א) and the element of Air, symbolizing the limitless potential of mind before it takes shape.

On the Tree of Life, the Fool connects Kether to Chokmah, representing the first movement of consciousness emerging from pure Being.

This state corresponds to the mystical declaration:

Eheieh — “I Will Be.”

At this stage, identity has not yet crystallized. Consciousness is pure possibility.

The imagery of the card reflects this:

  • The green man symbolizes the life force in its innocent state.

  • The crocodile below hints at the primal depths of existence.

  • The tiger represents untamed instinct and creative chaos.

  • The caduceus and dove indicate the spiritual current of evolving consciousness.

In metaphysical terms, The Fool represents the Self before the mirror of matter exists.

The soul has not yet asked the question of identity.

It simply is.

The Priestess — The Mirror of Consciousness

The next stage of the journey is represented by The Priestess, attributed to the Hebrew letter Gimel (ג).

This card connects Kether to Tiphareth, forming one of the most mysterious and sacred paths on the Tree of Life.

In Hermetic symbolism, The Priestess represents the mirror through which consciousness reflects itself into manifestation.

She is the guardian of the Astral Light, the realm where images form before they become physical reality.

The veil behind her represents the hidden worlds of the unconscious and the subtle planes of existence.

Her symbolism includes:

  • The Moon — the reflective nature of psychic consciousness.

  • The Bow of Artemis — the focused projection of will through perception.

  • The Camel — the vehicle that carries consciousness across the desert of the Abyss.

In the context of this lesson, the Priestess represents the mirror of the soul.

Here the Infinite begins to observe itself.

The soul looks into the mirror of manifestation and asks:

“If I exist… what am I?”

This is the beginning of the initiatory journey.

The Universe — The Self Realized Through Experience

The final stage of this arc is represented by The Universe, the last card of the Major Arcana.

This card corresponds to the Hebrew letter Tav (ת) and the planet Saturn, representing completion, structure, and manifestation.

On the Tree of Life, this card connects Yesod to Malkuth, symbolizing the final crystallization of consciousness into the material world.

The dancing figure in the card represents the awakened Self moving within the universe it has created.

The surrounding kerubic figures symbolize the four elements and the four fundamental forces of existence.

The serpent and spiral imagery represent the cosmic cycles of evolution.

In Hermetic philosophy, the Universe card represents the realization that:

the individual and the cosmos are reflections of the same consciousness.

The soul that once emerged as the Fool now recognizes itself in the mirror of existence.

The question “I Am… as what?” is answered through experience.

Life is the mirror- The Self is the Observer

The Three Cards as a Hermetic Formula

When these three cards are studied together, they reveal a profound metaphysical teaching.

The Fool
Pure consciousness before identity.

The Priestess
The mirror through which consciousness reflects itself.

The Universe
The realization of identity through experience.

Together they describe the journey of the soul from infinite potential to self-awareness through embodiment.

In Hermetic terms:

The Fool is the Divine Thought.
The Priestess is the Reflective Mind.
The Universe is the Manifested Self.

The Initiatory Teaching for Tarot Students

For the student of the Thoth Tarot, these cards reveal that the Tarot is not merely a divination tool.

It is a map of consciousness discovering itself.

Every reading reflects this deeper process.

Each card describes a stage in the soul’s exploration of identity.

The Fool represents the origin of awareness.

The Priestess represents the mirror of perception.

The Universe represents the realization that the Self and the cosmos are one continuous field of consciousness.

Thus, the Tarot becomes what the Hermetic tradition always intended:

an alphabet of the soul through which the Infinite learns what it is.

3. The Abyss and Self-Awareness

Above the lower Tree lies the mysterious region called the Abyss.

The Abyss separates the Supernal consciousness (Kether, Chokmah, and Binah) from the individual mind below.

Symbolically, it represents the point where the Infinite becomes aware of itself.

Before creation there is:

Ain — Nothing
Ain Soph — Limitlessness
Ain Soph Aur — Limitless Light

Creation begins when the Infinite reflects upon itself.

One could say:

The universe exists because consciousness observed itself.

The human soul participates in this cosmic act of self-awareness.

Each individual life becomes a unique perspective through which the Infinite experiences itself.

4. Parapsychology and the Non-Local Mind

Parapsychological research has long suggested that consciousness is not confined to the brain.

Phenomena such as:

  • Telepathy

  • Remote viewing

  • Precognition

  • Near-death experiences

indicate that awareness may operate beyond the physical body.

Hermetic philosophy anticipated this idea long ago.

According to Hermetic thought:

The brain does not create consciousness.

It filters and focuses it.

The mind is more like a field of awareness that temporarily expresses itself through the nervous system.

Thus, the personality is not the source of mind but rather a lens through which mind experiences reality.

5. The Magical Formula of “I AM”

One of the most powerful Hermetic formulas is the declaration:

“I Am.”

This phrase echoes the divine name of Kether:

Eheieh — I Will Be

In mystical philosophy, the phrase “I Am” represents the first moment of conscious existence.

However, what follows the words “I Am” determines the direction of one’s life.

Examples include:

I am a victim.
I am a seeker.
I am a creator.
I am consciousness.

Each declaration shapes the identity through which the soul experiences reality.

Thus, the initiatory question becomes:

“I Am… as what?”

6. The Initiatory Journey of Identity

Hermetic initiation is essentially the process of discovering what we truly are beyond temporary identities.

Students of Tarot and Qabalah gradually examine and transcend different layers of identity.

These layers include:

  1. The body

  2. The emotions

  3. The thinking mind

  4. The personal story

  5. Archetypal identity

  6. The Solar Self of Tiphareth

At the level of Tiphareth, the initiate encounters what Hermetic traditions call the Holy Guardian Angel.

This is the radiant center of consciousness that existed before the current personality formed.

From this point onward, the student begins to understand that life itself is an exploration of consciousness by consciousness.

7. The Universe as Self-Observation

From a Hermetic perspective, the universe exists so that awareness may know itself.

Every human life becomes a window through which the Infinite observes its own nature.

Each experience is therefore part of a greater act of self-discovery.

In this sense:

Life is the mirror.
The soul is the observer.
The personality is the reflection.

The purpose of spiritual work is not merely to accumulate knowledge.

It is to discover the deeper identity that is thinking us into existence.

Lesson Summary

Key Hermetic principles from this lesson:

• Consciousness precedes matter.
• The personality is a reflection of the soul.
• Yesod functions as the mirror through which the soul projects into matter.
• The Abyss represents the moment of cosmic self-awareness.
• The phrase “I Am” is a magical declaration of identity.
• The initiatory journey is the discovery of the true Self centered in Tiphareth.

Reflection Exercise for Students

Ask yourself the following question during meditation:

If my personality is a reflection of a deeper Self, then what aspect of consciousness is experiencing life through me?

Observe your thoughts, emotions, and reactions as if they were reflections in a mirror.

Notice the silent awareness behind them.

That awareness is closer to your true identity than the personality that describes itself.

Closing Hermetic Reflection

When a student meditates on these three cards, they begin to understand a profound truth of the Western Hermetic tradition:

Life is the mirror.
The soul is the observer.
The universe is the reflection of the question:
“I AM… as what?”
