the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot-Two of cups.

The Thoth Tarot-2 of Cups-Love and the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot-2 of cups.

The number 2, of any card suit, represents the Word and the Will. Therefore, the 2 of Cups is the first manifestation in the Suit of Water which is called Love. Love is not a gentle force, because of the mutual annihilation of the individual by the process of Union; when the Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine Unite, there is no male or female present, only the Divine Androgen exists. Above the couple is the Winged Lion Headed Caduceus of Mercury/Hermes. Symbolizing the union of male and female as one Celestial Energy (Lion is a symbol for the Sun). Both lover's are presenting the marriage cups to one another, signifying a loving relationship. The back ground is a fertile land and a comfortable home, both implying a happy physical relationship.

The Thoth- 2 of Cups

The Thoth- 2 of Cups represents Venus in Cancer. Cancer is known as the most receptive of Signs, as it it the House of the Moon, and in that sign Jupiter is exalted. There is a superficial friendship among these three planets (in astrology, the Moon is seen as a planet).

In the Thoth Tarot-2 of Cups, the paired Dolphins (the important symbol of the "Royal Art" of alchemy as they imply forces of Apollo) are intertwined, with the flowing of Love coming from the Great Lotus of the Goddess, into the twin Lotus below and overflowing into the Cups resting on a calm Venus-Green Sea. In mythology and elder mysteries, fish generally represent the Goddess Venus, and Dolphins relate more specifically to Neptune and the Sun God Apollo. This is a purity of Love, that the brain is unable to conceive of or often understand, making such an absolute annihilation of the individual in the Overflowing Power of Unity, a wonder. In the world of the animal mind/brain, sexual love is "life loving itself"; In other words, the DNA molecule is pushing the body to mate. Hormones flood the body, and the brain goes all "mushy", and rational thought is unable to solidify. This is "romantic love"; However, the Love of Apollo, is the love of "Soul mates". It annihilates the individual, in complete imitation of the One Solar Logos, that becomes 2; the 2 we call "Will to Force"-Masculine and "Will to Form"-Feminine. To see this clearly, just take a circle, 0 and twist it into a figure 8. There really is only One continuous self there, but the illusion of the twist, makes it look like 2 separate circles and/or "selves". This is the secret of illusion. It makes magic happen!

The Will, and the Word, united become Form. The Word being The Logos, the source of all Vibration and The Will being Spirit, annihilating love where the ego becomes lost in the Overflowing Sensation of Becoming One from the Union of 2.....you'll understand that you just can't "wrap" your brain around it. I think the common statement being," I am at a loss for words." There seems to be some kind of heated fluid that is drowning all reason. Then, my friend, you have experience what the 2 of Cups alludes to! However, being a purity, from another dimension of conscious energy, after time, it will pick up detritus from our "shipwrecked" brain, and slowly progress to a 4 of Cups, as the suit develops. As in all things, the Second Law of Thermodynamics comes into play, and "...All things proceed from order to disorder." and we slowly degrade the Mystery, with identify words of fear filled reason. "True Love" requires a deep spiritual tie and constant inner awareness, where one "Above all things, Know themselves".

The Rider-Waite-Smith 2 of Cups, emphasizes the mundane and esoteric meaning of love, marriage and partnership. The Male and Female are obvious, she in the moon and water colors of blue and White. He in the solar colors of yellow and red (the wreath on his head). In Qaballah, it is known that the Water (consciousness and emotion) can only flow through the agitating movement provided by Chokmah-Fire. This is a joyous union and loving partnership of the Female, water and the Masculine fire. The Rider-Waite-Smith shows the Chokmah Fire in the Red colored Winged Lion. The Lion image is also used to signify the Sun or "Solar Logos" or The Word. The Caduceus symbol besides being a symbol for the DNA molecule, is also a symbol of Union of Female and Male force as well as Mercury, which is also suggested in the Winged aspect of the Logos/Lion. Thereby the love between a couple, is a message or communication from the Will and the Word. In other words, "God is Love". Here love is seen as a union of Spirit, Mind and Body.

The 2 of Cups, is also called the Lord of Love under Will, which is its true meaning where Will is Spirit and not some egoistic possession of the brain, for that is a minor will indeed. The 2 of Cups shows the harmony of the Universal Female and the Universal Male, radiating an intensity of joy and ecstasy that washes away any and all concern. It is The Love, that connects us all together as One, while the massive flow of this connectivity to All, flows through the Union of 2, that are created by twisting an infinite circle into a figure 8, may explain why it seems so overpowering to individual reason and why the 8 is a symbol for infinity.

When 2 OF CUPS is thrown for the querent, and depending on its position in the reading, and the dignity of the accompanying cards, it usually implies:

  • Love, marriage, and pleasure,
  •  Warm friendship, but that is a weak statement for such an overwhelming heat, so it's more like an intertwining, of harmony, mirth, subtlety, pleasure,  and a sometime dash of folly that seems to bind us in mystery and sensation of a "deeply Warm" friendship that radiates from the galactic core.
  •  An ecstasy that only the True Union of the Feminine and the Masculine can produce.
  • Communication where one is opening up to listen and respond to others.
  • There is a deep desire to open up to and experience a loving relationship within the querent at this time.
  • The pledging of an relationship or love affair.
  • The Wisdom of love, where the Soulful love is focused on its origins.

If the Cards accompanying the 2 of Cups are all ill defined, than this card represents, dissipation, waste and silly action.
