the Babylonian tarot-4 of cups-mixed blessing

The Babylonian Tarot- 4 of Cups-Mixed Blessings, understands that luxury is a mixed blessing. The image of this card is from the Babylonian Epic of Erra and Ishum. It all begins when the jeweled city looses its luster as Marduk, the elderly god, becomes inattentive and disengaged with the lives of his people. Luxury and Peace, makes active minds bored, as they have no new challenges to brighten our creativity. Erra, who is depressed over Marduk's inattention, asks "What's up?" Erra, the war god, then becomes critical of the disheveled look of Marduk. Irritated by this critique, Marduk stalks off to see his tailor, leaving the war god in charge of the jeweled city. Big mistake, as the war god attacks the city, destroying the just and the unjust alike. Ishum, the wise counselor of Marduk, stops the destruction before it becomes total, by appealing to the war god's good sense. Ishum then makes a prediction that the surviving Babylonians, will ultimately prosper and thrive.

In the illustration of this card, we see Marduk turned away, forgetting his past glory, while turning his back on his greatest accomplishments. 2 libation cups are shown, along with, 2 ceramic pots implying mixed blessings or blended fortune. In the center of the card is the cuneiform symbol for the number 4.

Hence, this card describes the Neti-Neti (Not this-Not that) world of those who seek happiness by consumption. This is known to most of us, who think that buying or having the next new gismo, or jewelry, will make us happy. Truth in fact, once owned, things become boring after awhile and we then go out to get something new to makes us feel better. It is the inner peace of knowing one's inner soul, that really makes us happy. The outer world never built us, nor is it our inner lover, who has created us as it's persona. When we reject the trust of spirit, we leave a hole in our heart, that we then try to fill with stuff. After awhile "stuff" becomes a burden rather than a release.

From the Golden Dawn Texts:

“In Chokmah is the Radix of blue and thence is there a blue color pure and primitive, and glistening, with a spiritual Light which is reflected into Chesed. And the Sphere of its Operation is called Zedekiah or Justice and it fashionith the images of material things, bestowing peace and mercy: and it ruleth the sphere of the action of the planet Jupiter. And all is the title of a God strong and mighty, ruling in Glory, Magnificence and Grace. And the Archangel of Chesed is Tsadkiel, the Prince of Mercy and Beneficence, and the Name of the order of Angels is Chasmalim, Brilliant Ones, who are also called the Order of Dominions. The Sephira Chesed is also called Gedulah or Magnificent and Glory."

With such flowery words of ritual adoration, it is often difficult to realize that luxury is Part of your Inner inheritance as a Divine Child. However, inside of you, which is infinity, you are compose of these 10 Sephirotic "states of energy conscious". Thus the value of inner self-meditation and skrying of the tarot cards should be apparent to one who is interested in introspection and finding the "jeweled lotus within".

thoth-4 of cups-luxury

THE 4 OF CUPS-Luxury, in the Thoth Tarot is called Luxury or Lord of Blended Pleasure. The Planet is Moon and the sign is Cancer. The Angels of the Decan are: Hayayel and Mevamayah Practice calling these names, you may be surprised at the vibratory change.

The 4 of Cups is Chesed in Briah, here Chesed is influencing the unconscious mental realm. The alternate flow of the Moon is mitigated in Cancer, as the Moon naturally rules in this sign. Changing cycles are still there, but passive, and slow.

When looking at the Crowley Card, we see the Upper Golden Solar cups overflowing but not the lower, implying that the Pleasure is real but with reservations. The caveat being; pleasure but not without some anxiety and discomfort. Here the Luxurious feeling of pleasure is short and indifference soon takes over and as the multiple stems of the one lotus show, the energy of luxury is divided amongst multiple flows, implying too many diverse issues involved to stay stable. 4 is a "dead end" number so ending is the only place to go and action must be taken soon. Often, when in a state of luxury, one resists change. Therefore, evolution is stunted. Soon, the soul will "drop kick" the lazy personality who surrounds itself in "stuff", thinking it security. Change is the Universal Constant of Transformation. Stuff is a poor substitute for Self.

When the 4 of Cups-Luxury card is thrown during a reading, it implies:

  • For a time, say 4wks or 4 months the querent shall experience emotional luxury, which is the capacity to make other people feel emotionally satisfied, secure and peaceful.
  •  A period of contentment but this is the edge of completion and a new vision of love is being seen. Thus there is both the gift and challenge of a fallow period.
  • There may be boredom, and apathy with a sprinkling of discontent as the querent awaits inspiration.
  • Here there is type of balance that is caught between the worlds of thought and action.
  • A good time for clarity and refining things down to a simple truth.

When ill defined by the surrounding negative cards in a reading, it implies:

  • Possessive inclination (restricting another person through and excess of affection),
  • Mediocrity (taking for granted what one has).
