Queen of the Thrones of Flame • Water of Fire • Queen of the Salamanders
The Thoth Queen of Wands is the living embodiment of Fire made conscious. In the Hermetic Qabalah, the Queens correspond to Binah, the Third Sephirah upon the Tree of Life, the Great Mother and Sanctifying Intelligence. Binah receives the dynamic force of Chokmah and gives it form, making the Queen not merely a ruler of fire but the womb in which Spirit becomes creative power.
She is called Water of Fire, a Hermetic paradox describing consciousness (Water) directing Spirit and Will (Fire). Passion without awareness becomes destruction; awareness united with passion becomes creative genius. She does not extinguish the flame—she gives it purpose.
Unlike the Knights, whose fire rushes outward, the Queen's fire burns steadily like the heart of a volcano. She is not explosive enthusiasm but enduring power.
Binah – The Great Mother of Fire
The Queens represent the Divine Feminine, the Will-to-Form expressed through each elemental suit. The Queen of Wands is therefore Understanding expressing itself through Fire.
She teaches that genuine authority comes from mastery of oneself rather than mastery over others.
Her throne is not simply surrounded by flames—it is flame. Fire serves her because she has already conquered the inner fire of fear, anger, desire, and ambition.
The lesson is simple:
Rule your passions, or your passions will rule you.
Astrological Attribution – The End and Beginning of the Zodiac
The Queen rules the third decan of Pisces and the first two decans of Aries, making her one of the Tarot's great transitional powers.
Pisces dissolves.
Aries ignites.
She therefore stands between ending and beginning, the sacred moment when one life has burned away and another is waiting to be born.
Old identities become ash.
New purpose rises from the fire.
Like the mythical Phoenix, she reminds us that ashes are simply tomorrow's fertile soil.
The Salamanders – Fire Elementals of the Soul
Medieval alchemists described Salamanders as spirits living within flames. Hermetically understood, these beings are not tiny fiery reptiles waiting to crawl out of your fireplace and ask for tea.
They symbolize the living fire hidden within human consciousness.
They represent:
- Courage
- Creative inspiration
- Sexual vitality
- Willpower
- Transformation
- Spiritual purification
The initiate does not summon outer Salamanders.
The initiate awakens the inner Salamander through disciplined Will, meditation, creativity, and spiritual practice.
Volcanic Consciousness
Lady Frieda Harris painted the Queen almost as a living volcano.
This imagery beautifully mirrors the Hawaiian goddess Pele, whose fires simultaneously destroy and create.
Every volcanic eruption appears catastrophic...
...until one remembers Hawaii itself exists because volcanoes never learned how to quit.
Likewise, the Queen destroys only what has already outlived its usefulness.
The Leopard of Instinct
One of the card's most striking symbols is the leopard resting beneath her hand.
In Hermetic psychology, the leopard represents the instinctive subconscious.
Its spotted coat symbolizes the union of:

Paracelsus classified Salamanders as the elemental intelligences of Fire.

The Baroque Tarot Queen of Wands sits upon her throne dressed in elaborate Baroque fashion, radiating authority, elegance, and controlled passion. In her right hand she holds a wand crowned with a sunflower, while her left-hand rests upon her leg holding a marigold.
The sunflower symbolizes solar confidence, vitality, loyalty, and the natural tendency to turn toward the Light. It reveals her radiant public nature: charismatic, commanding, and difficult to ignore.
The marigold adds a more complex note, traditionally associated with passion, protection, remembrance, and the golden fire of the Sun. Together, these flowers show that her power is not merely decorative. It is rooted in warmth, endurance, and conscious purpose.
At her feet sit two domestic cats, one black and one tawny. These two felines divide the leopard symbolism of the Thoth Queen of Wands into separate expressions. The tawny cat represents visible fire: confidence, creativity, warmth, courage, and social magnetism. The black cat represents hidden fire: instinct, mystery, sexuality, shadow, and the dangerous passions of the subconscious.
In the Thoth card, these qualities are united within the spotted leopard. In the Baroque image, they appear as two distinct animals, suggesting that the Queen must consciously reconcile her radiant and shadow natures. One cat purrs in the sunlight; the other watches from the psychic basement. Both belong to her.
Her facial expression is stern yet questioning. She does not merely look at the querent; she evaluates them. Her gaze appears to ask:
“What is it that you truly want—and are you prepared to act upon it?”
This is the practical challenge of the Queen of Wands. Desire alone is not enough. She demands clarity, confidence, and purposeful action. She will encourage passion, but she has little patience for hesitation, excuses, or theatrical helplessness. After all, she already supplied the throne, the wand, the flowers, and two cats. The least the querent can provide is a clear answer.
Where the Thoth Queen of Wands expresses volcanic, elemental, and cosmic fire, the Baroque Queen presents the same archetype in a more human and social form. She is the commanding hostess, political matriarch, creative leader, and magnetic sovereign who knows how to use grace, appearance, and presence as instruments of Will.
Her lesson is simple: unite the black cat and the golden cat—shadow instinct and conscious confidence—then direct both toward a clearly chosen purpose.
When the Queen of Wands Appears
The Queen of Wands often represents someone who is:
- Confident
- Independent
- Highly intuitive
- Adaptable
- Creative
- Charismatic
- Passionate
- Generous
- Protective
- Magnetic
- Fiercely loyal
- Spiritually courageous
- Comfortable taking command
- Drawn toward self-mastery
