The Arcane Tarot-Three of Wands

Thoth-3 of wands-virtue
The Thoth Tarot 3 of Wands - Virtue
The Thoth Tarot 3 of Wands, titled Virtue, is the image of potent force rightly directed. This is not mere enthusiasm, desire, or ambition. It is the state in which Spirit, Mind, and Body act in conscious agreement. In Western Hermetic understanding, Virtue is the effective power that makes thought become action and vision become manifestation.

The number Three is the number of Binah, the Great Mother, Understanding, the power that gives form to force. Here, the fiery Will of Chokmah is received into Binah and brought into ordered expression. Thus, Virtue is not chaotic force. It is strength with form, power with integrity, and passion governed by self-knowledge.

On the Thoth card, the three wands and lotus blooms show a united ternary action: I - AM - ME.
This may be understood as:
- I = Spirit
- AM = Mind
- ME = Body in living manifestation
When these three are in harmony, one stands in true identity and living power. One is no longer divided by social conditioning, dogma, false self-images, or the parasitic currents of collective confusion. One becomes present as a conscious force of being.
Virtue, then, is not moral posturing. It is inner alignment.

The Three Admonitions of Virtue
- Know yourself clearly.
See yourself as a spiritual, mental, and physical unity rather than a fragmented personality. - Be true to your own center.
Let thought, feeling, and action move in agreement rather than contradiction. - Do unto others as you would have done to you.
Virtue naturally expresses itself as right relationship, because true strength does not violate life.
These three admonitions reveal that Virtue is not weakness, chastity, or obedience to external rules. It is the disciplined radiance of an integrated soul.

Sun in Aries: The Fire of Established Strength
The 3 of Wands corresponds astrologically to the Sun in Aries. This is fiery, solar, initiating force. Aries is Cardinal Fire, the power to begin, to move, to dare, to conquer inertia. The Sun here does not merely warm; it illuminates identity and pushes life toward expression.
This is why the card is called Lord of Established Strength.
Strength is already present, but now it is consciously directed.
The energy here is creative, expansive, sexual, and fertile. It is the force of Spring, when life breaks dormancy and moves outward into form. In metaphysical terms, it is the awakening of the Solar Self through the body and psyche. In parapsychological language, it is an increase of coherent life-force moving through the whole field of the person.
But such force must be governed by Virtue.
Without integrity, this same energy can become pride, impatience, ego inflation, or destructive passion. Fire that is not centered burns wildly. Fire guided by understanding becomes creative power.

Virtue and the Right Use of Power
The Thoth 3 of Wands teaches that power is sacred only when it is aligned. This is why Virtue is indispensable. The card represents a great outpouring of life-force, but it also warns that power without self-honesty becomes corruption.
Virtue is the safeguard.
To be virtuous is:
- to trust oneself without deceit,
- to align desire with higher purpose,
- to act with courage but not violation,
- to direct passion without losing center,
- and to honor the same divine fire in others.
This is why the card carries an ethical impulse:
Treat others as you would be treated.
Only a divided self seeks power through domination.
The integrated self expresses power as radiant participation in life.

In Summary
The Thoth 3 of Wands - Virtue is the card of integrated fiery will. It shows the union of Spirit, Mind, and Body in purposeful action. It is the force of the Sun in Aries: bold, fertile, radiant, and advancing. Yet its power must be governed by self-knowledge, integrity, and conscious direction.
This is the strength of one who knows:
I am not a body seeking spirit.
I am Spirit bringing light into form.
And therefore the lesson of Virtue is simple and profound:
Know yourself.
Be true to yourself.
Do unto others as you would have done to you.
That is established strength.
That is the fire of the soul in right action.

The Arcane Tarot - Three of Wands presents three wand-like scepters, sharp and pointed, each crowned with a radiant solar world. Red and gold foliage rises from the base of the card, while the background shifts from surrounding darkness into light behind the wands. Although it is not as explicitly Hermetic in symbolism as the Thoth 3 of Wands-Virtue, it still conveys the essential meanings of foresight, expansion, growth, and confident movement toward the future.
Upright:
With conviction and clear purpose, you are setting plans into motion and acting for future expansion. This card suggests progress, vision, and the courage to move beyond current limits. Opportunities may arise that broaden your horizons, including travel, enterprise, or a greater field of influence.
Relationships:
The relationship is looking ahead and preparing for the next stage of development, such as shared plans, deeper commitment, or travel together. There is movement here toward a broader future.
Career:
An exciting opportunity for growth may appear, especially one that expands your skills, reach, or professional influence. This may involve business travel, leadership, or a widening of your ambitions.
Reversed:
Delays, setbacks, or frustrations may interrupt your plans. However, these obstacles are not necessarily failures; they may be part of the greater learning process. Patience, endurance, and steady vision are needed. Do not lose faith in the direction of your growth.
Compared to the Arcane Tarot 3 of Wands, which emphasizes foresight, future planning, and expansion through a more modern divinatory lens, the Thoth Tarot 3 of Wands penetrates more deeply into the Western Hermetic mystery of power in motion. The Arcane card shows outward growth, opportunity, and the widening of horizons, while the Thoth card reveals the inner cause of such expansion: the aligned force of Spirit, Mind, and Body acting as one. In the Thoth deck, this is not merely planning ahead, but the fiery establishment of the Solar Will through the Supernal current of Chokmah, Binah, and their manifested harmony.
Thus, where the Arcane card speaks of progress, the Thoth card explains why progress succeeds at all: only when the whole Self moves in truthful agreement does power become creative rather than chaotic. Therefore, the deeper Hermetic key of the Three of Wands is not simply expansion, but Virtue.

When the 3 of Wands Tarot is thrown during a divination:
- It can symbolize Pride and Arrogance, sometimes Power and established force and/or strength.
- Realization of hope, completion of labor, nobility, wealth, and success after struggle.
- It is a new surge of Power that sprouts new manifested ideas and motion, all within the next 3wks or 3 months. This card also adds acceleration to the surrounding cards in a reading.
- The querent is experiencing the conjoining of Body, Mind and Spirit.
- Putting thoughts into action.
- Keeping on with present activities for they are conceived and will soon flourish into manifestation.
- Clarity, where you are seeing yourself honestly.
- Established strength in enterprises where collaboration will favor the querent.
- Radiating intention, understanding the Will of Fire, and increasing energy to birth ideas.
- This is a highly active card of powerful direction, so it requires us to understand that Virtue is not chastity, no nothing so obviously prejudicial, but rather "Always being True to Thine own self". Here there is a warning not to compromise your inner integrity and passion for others.
- Be as Spring and flower in your own inner fire! Clarify your identity and " Above all things, Know thyself!"
When the 3 of Wands card is thrown it also indicates that:
- In the next 3 weeks or 3 months, it is important to operate from a place of virtue/integrity as you move forward in sunny new directions.
- This could also mean that you should wait until your heart, mind and body are aligned and share clarity of purpose before you act in or handle your relationships with the Aries people in your life; Aries -March 21 to April 21.
- The state of natural clarity is represented in this card by the crystalline structure in the background. While the flames represent the ability to await the natural unfolding of things to come.
- Inside all of us is the "inner fire of balanced integrity", it is an inheritance of our Divinity; However, one is reminded that the smoke of denial has dimmed the flames of I Am Me, as a spiritual expression of Life-self- awareness into the slave thinking of "I Want To be me"(Wanna-Be).
- When this card is thrown, it means it is time to act as a True You and not what others think you must do.
When ill defined by the surrounding negative cards in a reading, it implies:
- Moodiness and attention getting behavior.
- Overestimation of one's own energy.
