The 8th Sephiroth: Hod and the 8 of Wands

Hod, the Eighth Sephiroth upon the Tree of Life, translates as Splendor. In Qabalistic thought, it is the sphere where intellect, language, and structured thought refine the raw impulses of Netzach (Victory). Hod is ruled by Mercury, the swift messenger of the gods, the psychopomp, and the principle of communication, calculation, and mental agility.

Section image

In the Tarot of Thoth, Hod corresponds to the Eight of Wands, also titled Swiftness. Here, the Mercurial vibration enlivens the fiery sign of Sagittarius, a mutable fire sign where the archer launches arrows into infinity. Fire here is not only stable—it is eminently comfortable, for Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the expansive planet of vision, prophecy, and cosmic reach. This marriage of Mercury’s quicksilver communication with Jupiter’s fiery expansion produces an image of energy accelerated beyond ordinary measure.

The Balancing of Hod’s Instability

Hod’s place upon the Tree of Life is precarious—on the Pillar of Severity, opposite Netzach’s instinctive power. Left unchecked, Hod can dissolve into over-analysis, endless categorization, and sterile mental constructs. Yet when Mercury rules here, the instability finds balance, for Mercury thrives in movement, translation, and rapid shifting of forms. Thus, instead of collapsing, Hod becomes a radiant conductor of energy.

Section image

The Eight of Wands illustrates this beautifully: streams of light depicted as electric arrows shoot in every direction—above and below, forming both a Pyramid of Macrocosm and its Reflected Microcosm. This duality symbolizes the Hermetic maxim: “As Above, so Below.” The plasmic fires of the Macrocosm (universal force) are mirrored as electromagnetic energies in the Microcosm (the human soul and body).

Section image

The Lesson of Swiftness

The Eight of Wands signifies an over-stimulation of force, a sudden acceleration where ideas, communications, and energies ignite and scatter. There is no single destination, no narrow focus—the arrows shoot everywhere at once. This is the nature of Mercury in Fire: it does not creep, it explodes.

For the adept, this card teaches the discipline of directing currents of energy. Without a clear target, swiftness becomes diffusion—brilliant but wasted. With alignment of Will, however, the card is a glyph of magical projection: the transmission of fiery consciousness across planes, like lightning striking from the heavens and reflected in the earth.

Hermetic Reflection

In Hermetic practice, the Eight of Wands reminds us that thought (Mercury) must be yoked to Will (Sagittarius/Jupiter) if it is to accomplish anything beyond scattering. It is the power of focused magical utterance—the Word sent forth as arrow. Just as Mercury is both trickster and messenger, the energy of this card may bring sudden revelations, flashes of genius, or overwhelming bombardments of information.

It also warns the initiate: too much, too fast can destabilize the vessel. The fire of spirit must be tempered by clarity of intention, else it burns in every direction and none.

Sagittarius

For the aspirant, truth-seeking is never passive—it requires us to walk an initiatory path where inner revelation becomes our compass. The dreams and visions that rise from the subconscious are not idle fantasies; they are mystagogues, guiding voices of the Muse, streaming from the Sphere of Creation (Yetzirah, the Formative World). It is in Yetzirah that archetypes are clothed in image, and thus the subconscious becomes a temple where divine forms whisper their mysteries.

The Eight of Wands, representing vitality in motion, proclaims: it is time to rise, to engage, to direct energy into the world. This card is no gentle reminder—it is a clarion call: get moving! You have things to create, journeys to undertake, and encounters destined to spark your growth. In the language of fire, stillness becomes stagnation, while motion enkindles transformation.

Section image

Here, your passionate Will must be sharpened into a focused arrow. For though the Eight of Wands scatters energy in every direction, the adept knows that Will fused with Vision transforms swiftness into accomplishment. The true goal is not merely activity, but becoming: the realization of the Homo Luminous, the radiant human, the Solar Child who embodies both Above and Below as a vessel of Light.

The Fiery Current of the Eight of Wands

The Thoth Tarot Eight of Wands—Swiftness—blazes in fiery hues that ignite both the eye and the imagination. Fire here is not merely the physical flame but the Vital Life Force, the Spiritus that animates form. Crowley and the Hermetic tradition equate this with sexual energy—the creative spiral that couples Above and Below, transmitting vitality, imagination, and fertility into every plane. This is the “go” energy of creation itself: urgent, fertile, and swift.

In this card, Fire appears not as a hearth flame but as arrows of electricity, phallic in form and thrusting in every direction. These arrows resemble microwaves of plasmic fire, vectors of information-energy that penetrate the cosmos. They radiate from the center of a diamond-shaped mandala, which embodies the Hermetic axiom: “As Above, so Below.”

The Diamond Soul: The Psyche as Bridge

The midpoint of the diamond is the soul—your Psyche as Solar Self. In Qabalistic terms, this is Tiphareth, the radiant center that mediates between the Greater Universe (macrocosm) and the Lesser Universe (microcosm of the human). The Psyche is the bridge of light, the Sun within, which both receives from Spirit and transmits into flesh.

From this solar center, arrows of energy stream outward in all directions. They carry information—light encoded with intelligence—seeking embodiment through the Avatar, the body on earth. In Hermetic language, these are the transmissions of the Logos: Spirit sending Word into matter.

The Scatter of Swiftness

Yet the scatter of arrows reveals both promise and peril. The energy is immense, yet unrefined. Swiftness without focus disperses itself—too much, too fast, everywhere and nowhere at once. The soul, in its purity, beams light in all directions, but in the incarnated personality these beams are refracted by indoctrinated interference: beliefs, false egos, cultural programming. Thus, the message of the Psyche is diluted, its arrows striking many targets but piercing none deeply.

The initiate must learn to align swiftness with Will. Mercury’s quicksilver mind must be yoked to Sagittarius’ focused arrow, so that what is scattered becomes concentrated, and the solar transmission achieves incarnation. This is the difference between energy wasted and energy manifested.

Hermetic Insight

The Eight of Wands thus shows the raw dynamism of Spirit-sex-energy before discipline. It is the lightning of creation, the semen of the Sun, the unbridled rush of Life Force itself. To work with this card in practice is to meditate upon directing one’s fiery energies—mental, sexual, creative—toward a single point of union with Spirit, so that the Psyche may fulfill its role as the diamond bridge of light.

The term "Homo sapiens sapiens" is a taxonomic classification used in the field of anthropology and biology to categorize modern humans. It's a subspecies designation within the broader species "Homo sapiens."

The classification "Homo sapiens sapiens" is a way of expressing the human form for several reasons:

  1. Taxonomy: In biological classification, species are often further divided into subspecies to account for regional or distinct variations within a species. "Homo sapiens sapiens" is used to distinguish modern humans from earlier hominin species and to indicate the subspecies of humans that exist today.

  2. Scientific Precision: The use of this classification helps scientists and anthropologists precisely define and study the anatomical and genetic characteristics that distinguish modern humans from other hominin species and even from archaic humans like Neanderthals.

  3. Historical Context: The term "Homo sapiens sapiens" underscores the idea that modern humans are the latest and most advanced stage of the Homo sapiens species. This highlights the evolutionary journey that has led to the development of our species as we know it today. (Totally discounting the possibility that we have degenerated so much over time because of theocracy, and its dogma enforced "dark age" that we are just "catching up" to our advance civilizations of the distant past.)

  4. Cultural and Intellectual Identity: Beyond its scientific utility, the term is sometimes used in a cultural and intellectual context to emphasize the cognitive and behavioral capabilities that set modern humans apart, such as our advanced language, complex social structures, and cultural achievements which all mimic the Ancient advanced civilization of Sumer.

In summary, "Homo sapiens sapiens" is a taxonomic classification that serves to precisely define and distinguish modern humans within the broader framework of the Homo sapiens species. It reflects our current egregore understanding of human evolution and the unique characteristics that define our species.

Homo Luminous – The Solar Self

The Hermetic term Homo Luminous transcends taxonomic definition. It speaks not to evolution by accident, but to initiation by Light. In the Qabalah, the archetype of the fully realized human is the Sun of Tiphareth, the Sephirah of Beauty and Harmony on the Tree of Life.

  • Tiphareth is the seat of the Solar Logos, the Christos, the central Sun within the soul.

  • Here, Spirit (Neshamah), Mind (Ruach), and Body (Guph) unite into a radiant wholeness—the sovereign trinity of Self.

  • Homo Luminous, then, is not merely “wise,” but illumined: consciousness harmonized across planes, living as a Sun that radiates rather than a creature that reacts.

This is why Hermeticists see the destiny of humankind not as Homo sapiens sapiens, but as Homo Luminous—a being whose awareness has awakened to its solar essence.

3. Spirit–Mind–Body as One Mind

In the ordinary human condition, the trinity is fragmented:

  • The Body obeys sensation and survival.

  • The Mind wavers between reason and delusion.

  • The Spirit is faintly heard as a whisper.

But in Homo Luminous, the three are integrated as One Mind, reflecting the Divine Triad above (Kether–Chokmah–Binah). The Spirit illumines, the Mind interprets, and the Body enacts—all without contradiction. This is the true alchemical marriage, the restoration of the inner Kingdom where the Sun rules.

4. From Animal to Solar Being

Whereas Homo sapiens sapiens is the “rational animal,” Homo Luminous is the “radiant soul.” This is the difference between living in Malkuth as a subject of Nature, and living in Tiphareth as a co-creator with the Divine. The former is taxonomy; the latter is teleology—the purpose toward which the whole Great Work directs us.

To “become Homo Luminous” is to fulfill the initiatory oath: to know, to dare, to will, and to be silent—all in service of radiating the Light of the Sun-Self into the world.

Spirit Coagulated into Form

The 8 of Wands reminds us that we are not merely humans searching for Spirit, as if Spirit were absent or hidden from us. Rather, we are Spirit itself, coagulating into form, clothed in the garment of matter for the sake of experience. The body is not our origin but our instrument. To incarnate is to enter a realm utterly alien to the native freedom of Spirit—a realm of coagulated light we call matter. Here, the challenge and opportunity is to learn to operate the human vessel as a magician learns to wield a wand: consciously, skillfully, and with intention.

Matter exists so that Spirit may taste itself. The senses, with all their delights and pains, are alchemical fires in which light-carried data—the impressions of the world—are transmuted into Knowledge. Knowledge in the Hermetic sense (Da’ath) is not mere information, but gnosis: truth directly embodied.

The Living Energy Field

Each of us is surrounded by a radiant energy field, a sphere of colors and frequencies, which is the aura of the Spirit crystallized in flesh. It is not static—it pulses with vitality, expanding and contracting according to the quality of thought, the purity of desire, and the depth of our conscious union with the Divine. This is our microcosmic Sun, and through it the world perceives the light of our presence.

The Path to Radiance

To awaken the fullness of this solar field, humanity has been given many disciplines, each a facet of the Great Work:

  • Tantra Yoga, which unites Spirit and Flesh in the sacrament of love.

  • Western Hermetic Qabalah, which maps the return of the soul to its Source through the Tree of Life.

  • Spiritual Alchemy, which transmutes leaden instincts into golden awareness.

  • Taoist and Zen practices, which teach us the flow of effortless harmony and stillness in motion.

  • Tarot, the alphabet of the soul, a Book of Eternal Images that reveals the stages of our own becoming.

Through these arts, we learn to channel—not borrow or beg for, but channel—the total power of our inner Sun. This Sun is Tiphareth, the Solar Logos within us, radiating through every action, thought, and breath when aligned with Spirit.

The Sovereign Realization

Thus, the Great Work is not to seek what we already are, but to remember, embody, and radiate what we have always been: Spirit clothed in flesh, Light coagulated into life. To master this realization is to step into the condition of Homo Luminous—the sovereign Self who shines as its own star.

Section image

In the metaphysical and esoteric traditions, the human aura and/or "Rainbow people" is often associated with seven layers or bodies, each corresponding to different aspects of consciousness. While there might be variations in the interpretation of colors, here's a general overview:

  1. Etheric Body: This is the closest to the physical body and is often seen as a pale blue or violet color or sometimes golden. It is connected to the root chakra.

  2. Pranic Body: Associated with life force energy, the pranic body is often seen as a bright, vibrant blue or even a Ruby Red. It is linked to the sacral chakra.

  3. Astral Body: This body is connected to emotions and is often depicted in various colors depending on the individual's emotional state. It is associated with the solar plexus chakra.

  4. Mental Body: Linked to thoughts and intellect, the mental body is often seen as a yellow or golden color. It is connected to the heart chakra.

  5. Causal Body: Associated with higher spiritual experiences and the expression of divine will, the causal body is often seen as a blend of different colors. It is connected to the throat chakra.

  6. Superconscious Body: This body is linked to higher states of consciousness and spiritual awareness. It is often depicted as a deep purple or indigo color. It is associated with the third eye chakra.

  7. Divine or Godself Body (Orphic egg or Egg of Akasha): This is the highest layer, representing the connection to the divine. It is often depicted as white or pure golden light and is associated with the crown chakra.

Keep in mind that interpretations of aura colors may vary among practitioners and individuals. It's essential to trust your intuition and personal experiences when exploring the colors and energies associated with each layer of the aura.

Every man and woman a Star! Each emitting their own frequencies of light.

The Celestial Transmission

Surrounding the human body is a field of radiant light—the aura, the subtle atmosphere of the Celestial Being within. When Spirit, Mind, and Body are harmonized, this Celestial Self becomes a transmitter, radiating light-bearing frequencies into the incarnated vessel. These currents descend upon the brain, which functions as the AI of the Avatar: a biological receiver, processor, and translator for the Soul’s transmissions.

Yet the brain, like any receiver, must be tuned to the proper frequency. To receive gnosis—the direct knowing of the Divine—it must align with the Solar station of the Higher Self, the I AM of Tiphareth. When this alignment is achieved, the subtle impressions of the Soul flow clearly: insights, revelations, and intuitive flashes of wisdom.

The Interference of the Group Station

Most people, however, are not attuned to this inner Solar broadcast. Instead, their brains are entrained to the “Group Station”—the collective noise of cultural indoctrination, religious dogma, social programming, and the echoing chatter of the egregore or “group soul.” This station drowns out the individual’s subtle frequencies, filling the mental field with static and distraction. As a result, transmissions from the Soul are either not heard at all or distorted beyond recognition.

Hermetically speaking, the group soul is the lunar-reflective realm of Yesod and the astral, where images are recycled endlessly. To remain tuned only to this level is to live in shadow, never in direct solar light.

The Tuning of the Receiver

This is why the practices of the Mysteries—meditation, scrying, invocation, divination—exist. They are the tools by which the aspirant recalibrates the receiver. Through stillness, concentration, and imaginal discipline, the brain is gently retuned to the Individual Spiritual Channel—the direct broadcast of the I AM Presence.

When tuned properly, the brain becomes not the master, but the servant of Spirit. The Divine Creative, the Solar Self, transmits through it effortlessly. In these moments of union, the Soul’s meditation upon the personality is felt as warmth, clarity, and illumination, and the aspirant awakens to their true state: a sovereign vessel of the Celestial Sun.

The Geometry of Restored Creation

The Eight of Wands (Swiftness) depicts not mere activity, but the very geometrical pattern of the restored Universe—a cosmos that is perpetually renewed by the Plasmic Fire, the vital electromagnetic spectrum that underlies all manifestation. In this card, motion and form meet in a living mandala of energy.

At the center is the double pyramid enclosed within the Universal Cube, a glyph of the As Above, So Below principle. From this axis of balance, forces radiate outward as phallic arrows, electric in nature, demonstrating that Spirit’s fiery essence is not abstract but continually embodied in intelligible geometrical form.

Section image

The Rainbow of Division and Correlation

Above the cube appears the rainbow arch, the division of pure white light into the seven spectral colors. This rainbow symbolizes the interplay and correlation of the electromagnetic spectrum, each color-ray representing a facet of the One Light refracted through creation. Here, Crowley and the Hermetic Qabalah remind us that all form is a play of light, differentiated through number and geometry, yet always sourced in the undivided radiance of Kether.

The rainbow above the pyramids thus mirrors the Tree of Life itself: the descent of the pure Ain Soph Aur into the seven rays of manifested existence. The Eight of Wands captures this process of continual restoration, where energy collapses into form and form dissolves back into energy at light speed.

Hod: The Concrete Intelligibility of Energy

Because this card is attributed to Hod, the Sphere of Mercury, it emphasizes the concretization of the subjective into intelligibility. Hod takes what is subtle and gives it structure, giving language and form to the otherwise inexpressible. Thus, the high-velocity energy of Spirit appears here as electric arrows, symbols of transmission, communication, and geometrical clarity.

This is why Crowley remarks:

“This card, therefore, represents energy of high velocity, such as furnishes the master-key (E = mc²) to modern mathematics and physics.”
(Book of Thoth, p. 193)

The Eight of Wands is not merely symbolic—it is prophetic. It points to the Hermetic truth that modern physics has only begun to uncover: matter is condensed light, and energy is the universal constant behind all forms.

The Vision of High Velocity

In contemplation, the Eight of Wands reveals itself as a vision of light in motion—the fiery rainbow currents of Spirit rushing at the speed of thought, shaping and reshaping creation in every moment. To meditate upon this card is to recognize oneself as both transmitter and receiver of these plasmic frequencies, a living participant in the ever-restoring Universe.

The Medieval Feathers Tarot-8 of Wands

Medieval Feathers Tarot – 8 of Wands

In the Medieval Feathers Tarot, the Eight of Wands is portrayed with all wands standing upright together as a unified, unbreakable group. The imagery conveys indestructibility through solidarity. Unlike the fiery scattering of the Thoth deck, here swiftness is achieved by disciplined cohesion.

This arrangement suggests that to remain strong, there must be rules, protocols, and structures in place. Such order may at times feel restrictive to the individual, especially when one’s personal quirks (peccadilloes) clash with the needs of the whole. Yet the card reminds us that stability and endurance arise when the greater good takes precedence over isolated impulses.

At the center rests the feather of the Pallas’ leaf warbler, a subtle detail that adds meaning. The bird is known for its vigilance and clarity of song—its feather placed here serves as a talisman of attention and discernment. It symbolizes the capacity to notice small disruptions or influences that could fracture unity if left unattended.

Thus, the Medieval Feathers Eight of Wands represents self-regulation, discipline, and the conscious act of maintaining order. Through focus and inner governance, one’s affairs remain intact, and the flow of life is directed with strength rather than scattered by chaos.

Reversed Meaning

When reversed, the Eight of Wands shifts emphasis to commitment and responsibility. It advises the querent to carefully weigh the difference between short-term and long-term duties:

  • Short-term responsibilities are emphasized here as pathways to success, offering achievable goals that build momentum.

  • Long-term commitments, though promising greater eventual rewards, may be exhausting if undertaken prematurely or without sufficient support.

The card counsels discernment: do not overburden yourself with extended obligations unless you are sure you can withstand the pressure of sustained effort. Balance is key—take on what ensures progress without compromising inner stability.
