Thoth Tarot- 5 of Disks-Worry

Lord of material trouble.

Since Disks, coins—or Pentacles in other decks—represent the material realm of manifestation, the Thoth 5 of Disks (titled Worry) portrays the state of consciousness wherein the material world becomes a source of anxiety, fear, and stagnation. This card reflects a fragmented awareness: one that is pulled backward by regret and loss and simultaneously pushed forward by anticipatory fear of the same happening again. The result is a mind that is not present—cut off from the Power of Now, which is the only true gateway to change and renewal.

When consciousness is not centered in the present moment, it forfeits the creative access to new perspectives, inspirations, and energetic movement. The soul's Energy-in-Motion—emotion—becomes locked in repetitive loops of what was or what might be, rather than channeling the Solar Will to create what is. Thus, this card often denotes a paralysis of intention, the kind that follows long periods of internal or external strain without decisive action.

broken image

On the Qabalistic Tree of Life, the 5's reside in Geburah, the sphere of Severity and Force. When expressed through the material filter of Assiah (Earth/Disks), this severity becomes restriction, impoverishment, or perceived lack. Crowley and Harris portrayed this beautifully in the Thoth deck as a cold, mechanized grid—symbolizing the constriction of organic life within a lifeless system. This is the domain of the "logic of lack", a false program that equates worth with possession and divinity with productivity.

broken image

The spheres of concern under this card’s dominion include health, finances, work, relationships, and creativity—in short, all areas where spiritual energy seeks embodiment. However, at its core, the 5 of Disks signals a consciousness of poverty, not just financially but energetically, emotionally, or existentially.

This card signifies the experience of losing one's footing, as if the earth beneath has crumbled. Difficulties, misfortunes, or setbacks accumulate until they feel overwhelming—like a snowball that becomes an avalanche. Yet the Hermetic truth hidden here is this: Worry is not reality—it is projection. What appears to be poverty is often the soul’s invitation to reclaim sovereignty by realigning with Presence and invoking the Solar Self.

broken image

To the knowing Magus who walks consciously through the material plane, it becomes evident that the misuse of one's possessions—whether physical, emotional, or energetic—inevitably leads to fragmentation. The careless dispersal of energy-in-motion (emotion) or the unwise application of power can sever one's connection to others, to purpose, and ultimately to the very current of abundance itself. Such misalignment risks losing everything that appears secure.

Yet the True Knowing—the gnosis of the initiate—is that wealth is not measured in accumulation, nor in titles, possessions, or material dominion. These are shadows on the wall of the Cave. What is to be gleaned from our descent into manifestation is that true wealth arises from the fearless, luminous cooperation of Spirit, Mind, and Soul—aligned in harmonic unison as the Whole Self, the perfected Tiphareth-consciousness.

True wealth is not in matter, but in Will-Mind over matter—in the sovereignty of consciousness that shapes, not reacts. We are not beggars on the road of life; we are inheritors of the All. To recognize oneself as a Living Star, a radiant fractal of the Ain Soph Aur made flesh, is to remember the Source of all abundance within.

What can be wealthier than to know thyself as the very Light of Creation clothed in form?

Title: Born of Stars: The Solar Origin of the Soul in Hermetic Qabalah

"Every man and every woman is a star."Liber AL vel Legis I:3

In this single line, Aleister Crowley presents a key to a cosmic mystery—one that opens the door to understanding the origin of the soul, the nature of the Self, and our place within the Great Work of the Universe. When we consider the Hermetic Qabalah alongside Thelemic doctrine, Jungian psychology, and esoteric mythologies of cosmic ancestry, we begin to uncover a staggering truth: each soul is a Solar Star, born of the hidden light of the Cosmos.

The Invisible Light of Kether: The Hidden Source

At the apex of the Tree of Life lies Kether, the Crown, the ineffable brilliance of the divine source. It is the "Primordial Point"—pure Being before Becoming. In The Book of Thoth, Crowley writes: "Kether is the goal, the summit of the Tree, the starting-point alike of manifestation and of the return to the unmanifest."

Kether is the light that cannot be seen—the purest radiation beyond the visible spectrum. Just as a physical star contains light that human eyes cannot perceive, so too does Kether radiate with the ineffable glory of the Ain Soph Aur, the Limitless Light. From this divine singularity, the soul descends through the Sephiroth, taking on form and individuality.

The Solar Self in Tiphareth: The Child of Light

As the divine spark descends into manifestation, it finds its most luminous reflection in Tiphareth, the Solar center of the Tree. Here, the Yechidah—the unique divine essence—takes on the cloak of a Self. It is in Tiphareth that the Higher Genius, the Holy Guardian Angel, and the Christos reside. This is the place of divine self-awareness.

Tiphareth is not merely a symbol of balance—it is the heart of the Soul, the center of radiance through which we remember our stellar origin. The Solar Self is the bridge between the invisible light of Kether and the tangible world of Malkuth.

broken image
broken image

Crowley often referred to the goal of initiation as union with this Solar consciousness. In Liber ABA, he states:

"The Adept must bring the Holy Guardian Angel into his consciousness as the Master of his own being."

The Angel is the Solar Star—the radiant intelligence guiding the soul back to its Source.

The Creatrix: Binah and the Cosmic Womb

Yet no star is born without a womb. In Hermetic Qabalah, that womb is Binah, the Supernal Mother, the Sea of Understanding. She is the collective unconscious in its highest form—the archetypal matrix from which all souls are formed. As Jung described the collective unconscious as a "reservoir of experience," so too does Binah serve as the cosmic memory of all forms and structures.

Binah is the Great Mother, the Creatrix, known also as the Shekhinah or the Supernal Isis. From Her chalice, the light of Chokmah is received and gestated into individualized souls. Thus, we are each born from a Star, but our soul is shaped by the Goddess.

The Engineered Body: Malkuth as the Temple of the Star

Mystical and mythological traditions speak of humanity as a being whose body was shaped by higher intelligences—whether angels, gods, or the Anunaki of Mesopotamian myth. In this context, the human body is a vehicle—a genetic vessel designed to house the stellar Self.

In Hermetic Qabalah, Malkuth is the Kingdom, the Earth, the sacred temple in which the divine spark resides. Crowley alludes to this in 777, where he aligns Malkuth with the Four Elements—the very substance of the physical body.

We are not merely born of dust—we are star-dust incarnate. Our genetic clay has been shaped to hold a Solar Jewel.

Conclusion: The Return of the Star to the Source

The Great Work is not only the perfection of the self—it is the remembrance of the Self’s origin. To awaken the Solar Star within, to rise from Malkuth to Tiphareth, and ultimately to return the light to Kether, is to complete the circuit of divine incarnation.

You are not merely a human being—you are a cosmic soul, a Solar Self born of a Star, cloaked in matter, and guided by the Light of the Divine. The journey of your soul is nothing less than a stellar pilgrimage back to the Source.

Let your light shine—not in the false glare of ego, but in the radiant brilliance of awakened remembrance.

We are a Psyche/Solar Mind (Sun of Divine Creative) not a body nor its subconscious fear-based survival mind. Each of us has the power of command. I Am... begins this command process. I AM Wealth, commands the manifestation of Spiritual, Mental, and Body wealth. To concentrate on loss is to command loss as your manifestation. To seek is to deny you have it. To "Know" is a command to manifest. Hence, I Am Wealth, Health, and Wellbeing! I AM-Commands energy to become these things: I AM built you as Itself!

broken image

You are not the body. You are Mind—the sovereign Psyche, the master Artisan who commands the prima materia of creation. Through your focused awareness, you emote thought—the First Matter—into the alchemical crucible of form.

This sacred power of emoting is what we call emotionenergy-in-motion. Emotion is not a weakness nor a reaction—it is the very engine of manifestation. It is the stirring of astral currents by the Will of Spirit.

The more potent the emotion you invest into a declaration of "I AM", the more powerfully you set the surrounding ether into motion. Like a stone cast into the still waters of the subconscious, your I AM ripples through the layers of the Inner and Outer Worlds.

Your thoughts are the wand; your emotions, the fire that animates the spell.

The more focused and emotionally-charged your command of Self—"I AM Wealth," "I AM Light," "I AM the Will and the Way"—the more swiftly and surely you awaken the response of the Universe. For the Universe is not distant. It is the mirror of your own divine psyche, ready to take shape around the patterns you imprint upon it.

Therefore, wield emotion as the Sacred Flame of transformation. Feel deeply. Declare boldly. For you are the Divine Child of the All—born to create as the All creates: through the Union of Thought and Feeling, Mind and Heart, Fire and Form.

broken image

You have already fulfilled your destiny, which is simply “to Be”—for that is the primal Will of the One, the ineffable I AM. This is the Divine Name Eheieh (אהיה), attributed to Kether, the Crown and First Sephiroth on the Tree of Life. Eheieh means “I Will Be”, the eternal unfolding of Being, the first exhalation of the Universal Breath—and through that sacred breath, you speak yourself into form.

You are the Word made flesh by the Word that willed to be.

Destiny, then, is the fact that you exist. It is the Divine Fiat that you are. But once this destiny is acknowledged and embodied, you now awaken to a higher operation: you command your fate. This is what is known in Hermeticism as the sacred birthright of freedom of choice.

Yet most souls wander in a fog of amnesia—not the kind brought on by time, but by cultural enchantment. A Patriarchal egregore, forged of fear, divisionism, and control, has veiled the Solar Self. Many walk as "I AM" identities, unconscious of the divine power they carry, suffering under the illusion that identity is dictated by outer circumstance.

We have forgotten that we are the Energy-Mind over matter, the living flame of Spirit often called the Soul, the Psyche, or the Sun of GodTiphareth on the Tree. Our consciousness commands our fate not by chance, but by where we direct our emotion—our energy-in-motion. What you feel intensely, you charge with power. What you declare through “I AM,” you mold into your personal cosmos.

I AM is the Logos of Selfhood, the creative utterance that binds Spirit to Form. What follows “I AM” is the exercise of your freedom, your assumption of identity. When you declare: “I AM Wealth”, and do so with the force of unshaken passion, you cast out the spectral illusions of poverty and worry. You shatter the fantasy of enslavement, and reforge your self-image in the Divine Mold.

The Divine never asked you to be poor in Spirit or flesh. It simply said: Be.

Astrologically, the Thoth 5 of Disks—titled Worry—corresponds to Mercury in Taurus, a pairing that reveals a deeper layer of concern rooted in communication, especially as it pertains to tangible, material, and sensual domains. Here, Mercury—the Logos, the messenger of the gods, and ruler of language, logic, and exchange—finds itself in the fixed earth of Taurus, which values stability, security, and possession. This placement can generate anxiety around whether one’s communications are being received, understood, or valued, especially in practical or financial matters.

It is the worry of not being able to articulate value, or worse, the fear that one’s voice has no worth at all.

Within the Qabalistic framework, this card resides in Geburah, the 5th Sephiroth on the Tree of Life, which represents Severity, Strength, and Correction. Often misunderstood as harsh or punitive, Geburah is in fact a state of intelligent energy that serves as a refining fire. It does not punish—it purifies. Its function is self-assessment through dynamic tension and focused force. The discomfort experienced in the 5 of Disks is not karmic retribution, but an initiatory pressure to realign with the truth of one’s inner power and presence.

broken image

As the Disks are rooted in Assiah, the world of matter and action, and the 5s are shaped by Geburah, this card reflects the pressure of the spiritual will attempting to move through the density of the physical plane. It signals a blockage or stagnation in the energetic system, often expressed as anxiety around survival, worthiness, or communication efficacy.

The Angels of this Decan, according to the Shem ha-Mephorash system, are Mibahiah (Guardian of spiritual enlightenment and clarity in troubled times) and Pooyal (Angel of transformation and perseverance). Together, they offer assistance in transmuting worry into wisdom, and grounding abstract thought into clear, purposeful communication.

In Hermetic practice, invoking these angelic intelligences—especially when Mercury is afflicted or when the voice feels stifled—can assist in aligning your will with divine clarity and calming the emotional turbulence that inhibits manifestation.

When Mercury, the planet of communication, intellect, and information processing, is positioned in the zodiac sign of Taurus and occupies a house within a birth chart, it influences the individual's thought processes, communication style, and learning preferences within the themes of Taurus, which include stability, material possessions, sensuality, and practicality. Here are the characteristics of Mercury in the house of Taurus:

  1. Practical Thinking: Mercury in Taurus fosters a practical and down-to-earth approach to thinking and communication. Individuals may have a grounded mindset that focuses on tangible results and real-world applications.

  2. Steady and Methodical Communication: Those with this placement tend to communicate in a deliberate, steady, and methodical manner. They may not be the quickest to respond, but when they do, their words carry weight and stability.

  3. Value-Oriented Communication: Taurus is associated with values and possessions, so individuals with Mercury in Taurus often place importance on what they say and how it aligns with their values. They may prioritize honesty, integrity, and loyalty in their communication.

  4. Resistant to Change: Taurus is a fixed sign known for its resistance to change, and when Mercury is placed here, there can be a reluctance to adapt to new ideas or ways of thinking. However, once they have formed an opinion or belief, they are likely to stick with it.

  5. Sensual Expression: Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of love and sensuality, so Mercury in Taurus may express itself through a love of language that appeals to the senses. They may appreciate beautiful words, poetry, or art that evokes strong sensory experiences.

  6. Slow to Make Decisions: Individuals with Mercury in Taurus may take their time when making decisions, preferring to thoroughly analyze all available information before coming to a conclusion. Once they have made up their mind, though, they are usually steadfast in their choice.

  7. Emphasis on Material Matters: Taurus is associated with material possessions and financial security, so Mercury in Taurus may place emphasis on practical matters related to money, investments, and material wealth in their communication and thought processes.

  8. Strong Memory for Detail: Taurus is a sign known for its attention to detail, and Mercury in Taurus individuals often have a strong memory for facts and figures, especially when it comes to practical or financial matters.

Overall, Mercury in Taurus brings a grounded, methodical, and value-driven approach to communication and thinking, emphasizing practicality, stability, and sensuality in its expression within the birth chart.

In the 5 of Disks, we see Geburah—Severity—exerting its forceful influence upon the dense plane of Assiah, the material world. This creates a condition of constriction, a force of correction through pressure, where stagnation or breakdown in the material realm serves to signal a misalignment of Will and form.

Interestingly, the very word “worry” holds within it the blueprint of this card’s meaning. Derived from the Anglo-Saxon term used by shepherds, "to worry" meant the act of a sheepdog biting and clenching the throat of a sheep—not to harm, but to stop it in its tracks. The grip is tight, unyielding, but bloodless. It is not a fatal wound—it is a forceful halt.

In this light, the 5 of Disks becomes a powerful symbol of energetic constriction—a moment when the flow of material progress is halted by an inner or outer tension so profound, it demands all awareness. Like the sheep, the individual is frozen—caught in a pattern of worry, fear, or obsessive thought that strangles momentum in career, relationships, finances, or health.

It is a Mercurial fear of being unable to act, speak, or move with confidence—manifested through Taurus' concern for safety, stability, and physical resources. What we witness is not an external enemy, but a psychic watchdog that clamps down on movement so that inner correction and redirection can occur.

As such, the 5 of Disks is aptly titled Worry—for it is the psycho-emotional mechanism that halts material progress until a new alignment between Mind, Emotion, and Will is forged. In the Hermetic sense, it is the red light of Geburah flashing within the temple of matter, commanding: Pause. Reassess. Realign.

broken image

The term "worry" originates from the Old English word "wyrgan," which meant "to strangle". This verb evolved into Middle English as "worien," retaining the sense of "to seize by the throat and tear"—a behavior commonly associated with predators attacking their prey. Over time, this physical action led to a more figurative meaning, describing the act of harassing or distressing someone, much like a predator persistently troubles its victim. Wiktionary+5Vocabulary.com+5Etymonline+5Wiktionary+2English Language & Usage Stack Exchange+2Cooljugator+2Etymonline

By the 19th century, "worry" had further transitioned to signify mental distress or anxiety. This shift reflects how the sensation of being mentally "strangled" or "harassed" parallels the original physical connotation of the word. Etymonline

Regarding the notion of "worrying sheep," this phrase pertains to the historical use of "worry" in the context of dogs attacking or harassing livestock. Farmers would describe dogs that chased, bit, or harassed sheep as "worrying" them, indicating a direct link to the term's original meaning of physical aggression leading to distress or harm.

In summary, the evolution of "worry" from a term describing a violent physical act to one denoting mental unease illustrates the dynamic nature of language and how words can develop more abstract meanings over time.

broken image

We may also wish to examine worry not merely as a personal affliction, but as a ruler egregore—a collective psychic program strategically embedded to maintain the boundaries of the social order. In this context, worry acts as a psychic leash, preventing the individual from straying beyond the invisible fences erected by cultural conditioning.

This egregore of institutionalized anxiety is designed to keep everyone in their "assigned place" within the hierarchical matrix. It subtly trains the psyche to equate deviation with danger, and movement toward sovereign selfhood with threat. Like a shepherd's dog trained to worry the sheep, the social mind—through media, education, and economic threat—grips the throat of independent thought and innovation, compelling compliance without bloodshed.

broken image

In this view, worry becomes weaponized emotion—a frequency broadcast by the collective egregore to enforce conformity and stifle initiative. Its purpose is to domesticate the Solar Self, to weaken the Magus within by flooding the system with doubt and hesitation.

Thus, the 5 of Disks can be seen as a red flag from the inner realms—a signal that you are under siege by external programming that seeks to overwrite your personal command of "I AM". Recognizing this intrusion is the first act of Magickal Resistance. The second is to transmute worry into Will, and reclaim the right to move freely through all levels of your Being.

broken image
broken image

Once again, Crowley’s genius in the Thoth 5 of Disks reveals itself through layered occult symbolism. The entire composition is shaped as an inverted pentagram, a visual cue that signals imbalance—a reversal of the natural hierarchy where the body’s fear suppresses the Will. In this state, the Spirit no longer governs form; instead, survival-based thought (rooted in the animal mind-the Nephesh) dominates the psyche, halting progress on the material plane.

Each of the five disks on the card bears a geometric symbol from the Hindu system of the Tattvas, ancient figures that represent the five subtle elements—Earth (Prithivi), Water (Apas), Fire (Tejas), Air (Vayu), and Ether (Akasha), the latter shown as the dark egg in the center. These are not just metaphysical abstractions; they are underlying energetic currents of matter—the vibratory fields that give rise to form and perception.

These same elemental principles are mirrored in Western Hermetic alchemy and Chinese medicine—each system recognizing that reality is composed of dynamic, interwoven forces expressing through both cosmos and consciousness. In the human being, these Tattvas correlate to the senses, the elements of the body, and even the cycles of thought and feeling.

Crowley’s placement of the Tattvas in this card is deliberate: it emphasizes that worry arises when the elemental equilibrium within the self is disturbed. The Will becomes fragmented across the elements, with no coherent center. Spirit—represented by Ether—loses its throne, and matter reigns in confusion.

Thus, the 5 of Disks doesn't simply depict material hardship—it reveals the energetic architecture of that hardship. It teaches us that the key to escaping stagnation lies in reordering the elemental temple within, allowing the Pentagram to right itself and the Solar Will to once again illuminate the body and guide it forward.

broken image

Mercury-Messenger of the Gods.

As mentioned, Mercurial energy is opposed in Taurian earth, simply because earth has a natural tendency to be stationary while Mercury is a messenger of swift motion. Granted it takes a strong Mercury to influence and unbalance Taurus, but Geburah, the red 5th Sephiroth, is just that strength. In fact, instead of Severity, she is sometimes called Strength and causes instability in the 5 states of matter. This instability is vibrational, much like an earthquake, yet the 5 states of energy (Tattvas) have enough attraction necessary to hold together on the lower planes forestalling complete disruption. So, again, this is more like the dog holding the sheep at a standstill, a kind of intelligence applied to labor. The 5 of Disks therefore also implies intense strain with long moments of inaction.

You may have heard the statement, "It's all in your mind". Truth is, all is Mind, and you're All Mind, even the body is composed of individual intelligent single cells coded into form and the DNA molecule is an "intelligent molecule". It is what you think that shall pollute your body, a pollution much more powerful than what you eat!

broken image

The 5 of Disks states that perspective makes our present state of being, and if our perspectives dwell in the past we are “up-side-down” ---we aren't living today; the body may be in the "now", but the activating principle of the mind is in "yesterdays".

This 5 of Disks card reminds us that in a state of worry we are presently inanimate, which is dead to action. We can change directions, be they physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental, only by acting and/or moving! You can't correct the direction of a parked vehicle so don't wait, begin with what you have even if your only action is to hold out your hand for assistance. Tomorrow and what-ifs are unimportant to motion as they only excuse inaction.

broken image

Crossroads.

It's time to break worry patterns by actively pursuing changes in communication patterns, financial, health, and in relationships with the Taurus people in your life. Therefore, worry is seen as a type of mental lethargy where one is at a crossroads and must choose a direction to break the chains of the past that are easily broken by current activity. Live the now, you are not "a past person" you are an I AM Now person---an active and unique expression of Alive Energy-in-motion.

Therefore, when the worry card shows up, it implies you're at a crossroads, and must choose a direction, and then move into action which is a worry- free zone, for as the old Zen axiom states, " one step begins a journey of a thousand miles!"

The Medieval Feathers Tarot- 5 of Coins

The Medieval Feathers Tarot – 5 of Coins presents a visual metaphor of destabilization through imbalance. The four coins form a familiar and stable foundation, symbolic of material equilibrium. However, the addition of the fifth coin—placed apart—disturbs this balance. It becomes the new and dissonant center of thought, introducing a disruptive element that challenges the existing order.

This fifth coin represents a new force, energy, or situation that has emerged with such intensity that it feels unmanageable. Its presence destabilizes the physical or emotional foundation you have built—whether in finances, relationships, health, or mental clarity. This card reveals that something unknown and potent has entered your field of experience, and while it may feel overwhelming, it carries within it a Hermetic commandSolve et Coagula: dissolve what no longer serves and reforge yourself anew.

The inclusion of the stellar jay’s feather in the card’s iconography acts as a subtle guide through this disturbance. In many traditions, the jay is a guardian of personal truth, a messenger between worlds, and a keeper of psychic boundaries. The feather, then, becomes a talisman of clarity and self-sovereignty—urging you to maintain inner peace while navigating outer disruption.

broken image

This card speaks clearly: the situation may feel like it’s spiraling out of control, but you are being called to engage consciously with the unfamiliar. Do not retreat into fear. Pay close attention. Seek understanding. This new force is not here to destroy you, but to challenge your complacency and birth new wisdom.

The feather also bears a personal message of well-being and self-care. It whispers: You are not well. Something within—spiritually, emotionally, or physically—has been neglected, and now demands your full attention. You may need to let go of something significant: a job, a relationship, a role, or even an identity. But this is not a loss—it is a sacred pause for restoration. Once your inner temple is rebalanced, life will offer you renewed opportunities, often far better than what you left behind.

Ultimately, the 5 of Coins in this deck is not an end. It is a threshold. A confrontation with the unknown that carries the seed of new beginnings—if you are willing to listen, dissolve, and reforge.

broken image

Universal justice.

There is also a subtle admonishment here to ignore pride and ask for help. Sometimes we struggle and feel like there is nothing to do but put one's head down and suffer through it. Look around and you will see there is shelter, warmth, and loved ones who are willing to help in some sense. You are not alone; others will help you weather this storm.

When Divination brings up the 5 of Disks/Coins, the querent is going through a period:

  • Of rumination, anxiety, or concern...or both.
  • Feeling left out of social events because of lack of money.
  • Of challenges concerning insecurity, deprivation, and even exclusion.
  • Where the mind is focused on survival issues and thus stopping creativity dead in its tracks as a feeling of helplessness and inertia takes over.
  • There is a foretelling of material trouble for the next 5 weeks or 5 months.
  • Of the next 5 weeks or 5 months, opportunities are presented to you for the release of worry about health, finances, relationships, productivity and to improve your communication skills.
  • The past, let's say when you were five years old, is what produces worry.
  • Of intending to avoid discomfort, and try to compare present day events, to past ones.
  • Locked into past pain----does not help us live in the present and this card reminds us to forget the what-ifs of yesterday, or tomorrow and to be the I Am of now.

If ill defined by the surrounding cards, it implies:

  • Failure.
  • Collapse.
  • Despair.
  • Triumph of Matter over Spirit (survival mind fear overcoming will).
