The 4 of Disks — Power

The Lord of Earthly Power

The Thoth Tarot 4 of Disks—Power represents the stabilization of material force. This is not explosive power, military power, or the dramatic power of domination. It is contained power: the strength of foundations, boundaries, resources, property, organization, and the ability to preserve what has already been accomplished.

In the Golden Dawn tradition it is the Lord of Earthly Power, attributed to Chesed of Assiah and the Sun in Capricorn. Keveqiah and Mendial are traditionally given as its angelic rulers.

Crowley's imagery makes the principle obvious: the card resembles a fortress. He describes it as expressing law and order maintained through authority and vigilance.

In other words: the castle is built, the bills are paid, the pantry is stocked, and somebody finally remembered where the keys are.

Chesed in Assiah — The Divine Architect Builds

Chesed, the fourth Sephirah, represents Mercy, expansion, benevolent authority, organization, and rulership. When Chesed descends into Assiah, the World of Action and material manifestation, abstract order becomes tangible structure.

A vision becomes a building.

An idea becomes a business.

Talent becomes a craft.

Authority becomes responsibility.

Prosperity becomes something that can actually feed, shelter, employ, protect, and sustain people.

This is why the 4 of Disks is not simply about possessing money. It concerns the intelligent organization of material energy.

Crowley associates Chesed here with the establishment of the universe below the Abyss—the formative principle becoming materially established.

The fortress therefore represents the Divine Architect within the personality: consciousness organizing matter according to intention.

The Four Elements Under Authority

At the four corners of the Thoth fortress are four great Disks associated with the classical elements:

• Fire — Will, vitality, initiative
• Water — emotion, intuition, receptivity
• Air — thought, communication, intellect
• Earth — body, resources, manifestation

The image suggests the four elemental powers brought into a stable terrestrial arrangement.

Alchemy might call this a powerful condition of coagula—energy has condensed into form.

But every competent alchemist remembers the other half of the formula:

Solve et Coagula.

Dissolve and coagulate.

Build and rebuild.

Stabilize and transform.

A fortress that can never change eventually becomes a tomb.

Sun in Capricorn — Solar Authority in Saturn's Kingdom

The astrological attribution is Sun in Capricorn, specifically the final decan of Capricorn.

The Sun represents consciousness, vitality, identity, illumination, and creative authority. Capricorn, ruled traditionally by Saturn, represents structure, endurance, discipline, responsibility, boundaries, and long-term achievement.

Together they produce disciplined solar power.

This is the person who does not merely dream of building something—they acquire the land, draw the plans, hire the workers, balance the accounts, and make certain the roof does not leak.

The Sun says:

Create.

Capricorn replies:

Fine. But we're using blueprints.

There is also a beautiful cosmological symbolism here. In tropical astrology Capricorn begins around the December solstice, when the Sun reaches its southernmost declination and begins its apparent northward return. Thus the Sun in Capricorn carries the ancient symbolism of light beginning its return from the depth of winter.

The fortress may appear motionless, yet a great solar turning is already taking place.

That is one of the secrets of this card:

True stability contains movement.

The Eye of the Hurricane

The 4 of Disks can be compared to the eye of a hurricane.

At the center, everything appears calm.

Yet enormous forces are moving around it.

Likewise, material stability is never truly motionless. The body is metabolizing. Markets move. Buildings decay. Cells renew themselves. Stars burn. Money circulates. Relationships evolve.

What appears solid is actually organized motion.

This gives the card an important metaphysical lesson: stability is not the absence of change.

Stability is successful relationship with change.

Even the number 4 expresses this principle through the square, the four directions, the four elements, and the fourfold establishment of manifested space. Four creates the container in which force can operate.

Hence Chesed is not merely a cosmic landlord collecting rent. It is the intelligence that says:

Let there be enough structure for creation to continue.

The Drawbridge — Power Must Circulate

One of the most important details of the Thoth card is its open access into the fortress.

The symbolism is profound.

Security requires boundaries—but healthy boundaries contain doors.

Wealth must circulate.

Knowledge must circulate.

Love must circulate.

Power must circulate.

Otherwise, preservation becomes possession, possession becomes attachment, attachment becomes fear, and fear eventually becomes avarice.

The 4 of Disks therefore carries both a blessing and a warning.

It says:

You have built something strong.

Then it asks:

Now what are you going to do with it?

If prosperity benefits only the person guarding it, the fortress becomes a prison.

If prosperity strengthens family, community, creativity, education, generosity, and future generations, earthly power becomes stewardship.

That is Chesed properly functioning in Assiah.

Metaphysics of Security

The card also challenges one of humanity's oldest illusions:

that permanence produces security.

Nothing in Assiah is permanent.

Bodies change.

Currencies change.

Civilizations change.

Buildings eventually crumble.

Even mountains are temporary when measured against geological time.

Therefore, genuine security cannot mean preventing change.

It means developing sufficient inner authority to remain centered while change occurs.

The aspirant discovers that possessions may support security, but they cannot create the deepest form of it.

That arises from Self-knowledge.

Hence the ancient injunction:

Above all things, know thyself.

When the personality identifies entirely with possessions, it becomes terrified of losing them. When consciousness knows itself as greater than its temporary forms, matter becomes a tool of incarnation rather than a master of identity.

Parapsychological and Psychological Dimension

Psychologically, the 4 of Disks can represent the instinct to defend accumulated resources because of previous experiences of deprivation, insecurity, loss, or uncertainty.

The psyche builds walls.

Sometimes those walls are necessary.

But psychic defenses that once preserved us may eventually restrict us.

Thus, the fortress becomes an excellent image for the boundary between the conscious personality and deeper layers of the psyche.

What are we protecting?

And from what?

Sometimes the treasure behind the wall is not gold at all—it is vulnerability.

The card therefore asks whether our boundaries are expressions of sovereignty or merely sophisticated forms of fear.

Power, Money, and the Magus

Money itself is not power.

Money is a symbolic instrument of exchange whose effectiveness depends upon human agreement, institutions, labor, resources, and collective confidence.

The consciousness using it gives it direction.

Money may build a hospital or a weapon.

Feed someone or exploit them.

Educate or deceive.

Liberate or imprison.

The Hermetic question is therefore not simply:

How much do I possess?

It is:

What does my Will cause my resources to become?

This is the deeper meaning behind the formula:

Properly understood, this should not mean pretending that practical financial realities do not exist. Magick is not improved by ignoring arithmetic.

Rather, it declares that value originates in conscious creative being, not merely in external symbols of valuation.

The Magus does not worship the coin.

The Magus directs the coin.

Spirit informs Mind.

Mind directs action.

Action shapes matter.

That is manifestation.

The Hidden Death Within the Four

There is also an intriguing numerological meditation available through ATU XIII—Death:

1 + 3 = 4.

This is not a formal Golden Dawn correspondence between the Four of Disks and Death, but it offers a useful contemplative echo.

Behind every stable form is transformation.

Death dances beneath permanence.

The skeleton of ATU XIII reminds us that transformation is already occurring inside everything we call solid.

Thus, the apparent immobility of the 4 contains the seed of the 5 of Disks—Worry, where established security begins to destabilize.

Power refuses evolution at its peril.

The universe has little sympathy for the sign:

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT — NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE AGAIN.

The Baroque Tarot — Four of Coins

The Baroque Tarot Four of Coins presents the same mystery through a more human image.

A powerful Baroque king sits upon his granite throne. He raises a great golden coin before his eyes while three additional coins rest beneath his feet.

His posture communicates possession, achievement, control, and worldly authority.

Yet the darkening sky suggests that change is approaching.

The king has wealth.

But does the king possess the wealth—or does the wealth possess the king?

The image captures the central paradox of the Four of Coins.

Financial security is valuable.

Responsible management is wisdom.

Saving resources is sensible.

But when preservation becomes obsession, prosperity contracts into possessiveness.

The coming storm reminds us that no throne, bank account, property, title, or institution exists outside the cycles of change.

The wise king therefore enjoys his resources without confusing them with his soul.

Divination — 4 of Disks/Coins

When the 4 of Disks or Four of Coins appears positively in a reading, it may indicate:

• Material security and financial stability.
• Ownership of one's personal energy and resources.
• Strong boundaries.
• Practical planning and organization.
• Responsible management of money or property.
• Physical vitality and grounded power.
• Building a reliable foundation.
• Consolidating previous gains.
• Leadership and authority.
• Gifts, inheritances, or accumulated resources.
• Concrete steps toward long-term security.
• The ability to withstand external pressure.
• A period of productive stability before another cycle of change.

It also reminds us:

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Security should provide the foundation from which intelligent risks become possible.

When Ill-Dignified

When poorly supported by surrounding cards, the 4 of Disks may indicate:

• Avarice.
• Possessiveness.
• Fear of loss.
• Hoarding.
• Excessive materialism.
• Stubbornness.
• Compulsive control.
• Creative blockage.
• Resistance to necessary change.
• Isolation behind emotional or financial walls.
• Confusing wealth with personal worth.
• Stagnation created by excessive caution.

Questions to Ask

When this card appears, ask:

Where have I successfully established stability?

Where has security become rigidity?

Am I protecting my resources—or imprisoning myself within them?

What can I safely circulate, invest, share, or develop?

Does my prosperity strengthen only me, or does it strengthen others as well?

Am I grateful for what already exists?

The lesson of the 4 of Disks—Power is therefore beautifully simple:

Build the fortress. Strengthen the walls. Guard what is sacred.

But keep the gate open.

For Power without movement becomes resistance.

Power directed by Wisdom becomes prosperity.

And the greatest earthly power belongs not to the one who possesses the most, but to the consciousness capable of transforming matter into meaningful expression of the Divine Will.

I AM the Power of Creation grounded in form.
I AM the steward of my resources.
I AM stable without becoming stagnant.
I AM prosperous because my power remains in motion.
