Thoth Tarot ATU XIX — The Sun

The Path of Resh, the Solar Self, and the Illumination of the Personality

In Western Hermetic Qabalah, The Sun — ATU XIX of the Thoth Tarot is attributed to the Hebrew letter Resh (ר), meaning Head. This is a profound attribution, for the head is the “sun” of the body: the seat of waking consciousness, perception, reason, and directed identity

The Path of Resh is traditionally placed between Hod, the Sephirah of Mercury, intellect, language, and form, and Yesod, the Sephirah of the Moon, imagination, dream, sexuality, and the astral foundation. Therefore, The Sun represents the illumination of the subconscious by the awakened conscious mind. It is the bright solar force that clarifies the lunar depths and brings the personality into greater alignment with the Soul.

Although the Path of Resh runs between Hod and Yesod, its solar rulership naturally reflects the radiance of Tiphareth, the sixth Sephirah, Beauty, the Solar Logos, and the seat of the Higher Self. Tiphareth is the Inner Sun of the Tree of Life: the center of harmony, equilibrium, sacrifice, resurrection, and radiant individuality.

Thus, The Sun is not merely a card of happiness, vitality, and success. It is a card of spiritual awakening, where the personality begins to remember its true source in the Solar Self.

Resh: The Head as the Inner Sun

Resh means Head, and in the human microcosm the head governs the body as the Sun governs the solar system. Just as the physical Sun radiates light, warmth, and life-force into the world, the awakened head radiates consciousness into the body-temple.

Here, the head is not merely an organ of thought. It becomes a Solar Crown, a point of illumination through which the “I AM” begins to shine into incarnation.

The Sun card therefore reveals the resurrection of conscious will. It is the awakening of the Solar Self from the shadowed sleep of unconscious programming. The false ego fears this light, because the Sun reveals what illusion, fear, and social conditioning attempt to hide.

In this sense, The Sun is the enemy of falsehood. It burns away the mold of the profaned personality and restores the soul’s natural brilliance.

The Sun and the Human Aura

The ancient Hermetic axiom, “As Above, So Below,” is powerfully expressed in the relationship between the physical Sun and the human aura. The Sun has fields of radiance; so does the human being. The macrocosmic Sun and the microcosmic Soul mirror one another

The human aura is the Word made flesh, streaming outward in living vibration. The Sun has flares; humans have emotional surges. The Sun has a corona; the Soul has a crown of consciousness. The Sun radiates through space; the awakened human radiates presence.

When the Solar Self is awakened, one’s presence alone can inspire, clarify, heal, and transform the surrounding field.

The Sun, the Twins, and the Union of Opposites

In the Thoth Tarot, The Sun shows dancing winged children or cherubic twins. These are not merely decorative figures. They represent the purified union of opposites: masculine and feminine, conscious and subconscious, solar and lunar, electric and magnetic, active and receptive.

They also echo earlier images in the Thoth deck: the children in The Fool and the Bride and Groom’s children in The Lovers. In The Sun, these principles are liberated, innocent, shameless, and radiant. The divided powers of the psyche have been reconciled into joyous movement.

This is the Solar Child of the New Aeon: the personality no longer imprisoned by inherited shame, fear, dogma, or false authority.

Crowley associates this card with Heru-ra-ha, the Lord of the New Aeon, expressing the Sun as spiritual, moral, and physical illumination. In this light, The Sun becomes the image of liberation: the human being released from inner bondage and awakened to Light, Life, Liberty, and Love.

The Sun and the Path of Awakening

The lower paths of the Tree of Life—Tau, Shin, and Resh—represent the formation and awakening of the incarnate personality.

  • Tau / The Universe represents the body and material field.
  • Shin / The Aeon represents the fire of spiritual judgment and renewal.
  • Resh / The Sun represents the awakening of conscious solar identity.

On the Path of Resh, the aspirant begins to perceive the personality as an instrument of the Soul. The body is not a prison. It is the sacred vehicle through which Spirit gathers experience. The mind is not an enemy. It is the mirror that must be polished until it reflects the Higher Self.

The personality becomes solarized when it serves the Soul rather than fear.

The Inner Sun and the False Ego

The Sun reveals. This is its blessing and its severity.

When the Inner Sun rises, the false ego cannot remain hidden. The false ego is built from fear, trauma, imitation, social pressure, inherited beliefs, and unconscious survival patterns. It is not the true “I.” It is a mask.

The Solar Self burns this mask away.

This is why The Sun is secretly connected to The Tower. The Tower destroys the unworthy structures of the personality, while The Sun reveals the radiant Self that remains after the collapse. To the false ego, this feels like destruction. To the Soul, it is resurrection.

The Sun says:
You are not the mask. You are the Light behind the mask.

The Adorable Fire and the Alchemical Body

In Hermetic alchemy, the Sun is the furnace of transformation. It turns the lead of profaned thought into the gold of illuminated consciousness. This is the “adorable fire” spoken of in the Western Mysteries: the inner spiritual heat that purifies, awakens, and reorganizes the aspirant.

This fire must not be forced prematurely. The awakening of the Solar force—often compared to Kundalini or serpent power—requires preparation, purification, grounding, and maturity. The Higher Self knows when the body, mind, and psyche are ready.

When properly awakened, this Solar Fire transforms the whole person. It clarifies the mind, strengthens the will, purifies emotion, vitalizes the body, and opens the inner channels of perception.

The body becomes the alchemical vessel.
The Soul becomes the Sun.
The awakened human becomes the Philosopher’s Stone in living form.

The Sun, Spirit, Mind, and Body

The Sun card also reveals the sacred ternary nature of the human being:

Spirit is the Will to Be.
It is the divine fire, the original impulse of existence.

Mind is the Womb of Psyche.
It receives Spirit’s impulse and shapes it into image, thought, symbol, and meaning.

Body is the Temple of Sensation.
It translates cosmic vibration into experience, memory, and gnosis.

When Spirit, Mind, and Body are aligned, the human being becomes a radiant Solar organism: a living expression of the Logos.

In Qabalistic terms:

  • Spirit corresponds to the Supernal Triad: Kether, Chokmah, and Binah.
  • Mind is harmonized through Tiphareth, the Solar center of the Ruach.
  • Body is grounded through Yesod and Malkuth.

The Sun teaches that embodiment is holy. The body is not separate from Spirit; it is Spirit made visible.

The Sun and the Baroque Tarot

In the Baroque Tarot, Key 19 — The Sun — preserves the traditional solar symbolism of joy, illumination, vitality, innocence, and divine blessing. Like the Rider-Waite-Smith Sun, it emphasizes the triumph of light over shadow and the renewal of life through solar consciousness.

Yet the Baroque Tarot gives this symbolism its own striking expression. Here, the Kerubic twins are represented by two horses who have thrown their riders and now gallop joyfully through a field of sunflowers. This is a powerful image of liberation. The horse, often a symbol of vital force, instinctual power, and the embodied soul, is no longer burdened by the rider of false authority. It has cast off the imposed control of the profaned ego and returned to its natural solar freedom.

Where the Thoth Sun is more explicitly initiatory and Aeonic, the Baroque Sun leans toward the devotional, symbolic, and natural. It presents the Sun as divine radiance blessing the material world, restoring innocence, and revealing the sacred beauty of incarnation. The soul is shown as a free horse: unburdened, vital, joyful, and no longer enslaved to the artificial commands of fear, shame, or false identity.

In this image, the field of sunflowers becomes the terrestrial mirror of the heavenly Sun. The flowers turn toward the solar light just as the awakened soul turns toward the Higher Self. This is the consciousness of spiritual renewal, where life itself becomes an act of praise.

Both the Thoth and Baroque Sun cards agree on the essential message: the Sun is not merely above us; it is within us. The awakened human being is a small sun, a radiant center of consciousness, warmth, joy, and creative power.

Divinatory Meaning

When The Sun appears in a reading, it indicates clarity, vitality, joy, illumination, success, and the restoration of confidence. It shows that confusion is being burned away and that the querent is entering a period of greater self-knowledge.

On a deeper Hermetic level, The Sun announces the awakening of the Solar Self. The personality is being reorganized around truth rather than fear. The subconscious is being illuminated. The mind is becoming clearer. The body is receiving more life-force. The Soul is beginning to shine through the face.

This card may also indicate healing, creative expression, spiritual rebirth, childlike freedom, and liberation from shame or inherited limitation.

Shadow Aspect (or reversed)

The shadow of The Sun appears when the intellect becomes arrogant, when confidence becomes vanity, or when the ego mistakes itself for the Solar Self. This is the danger of spiritual inflation: the personality claiming the light rather than serving it.

The true Sun does not dominate.
It radiates.

The true Solar Self does not seek worship.
It gives warmth, light, and life.

Final Hermetic Summary

The Sun is the splendor of awakened consciousness acting upon the material world. It is the Solar Logos within the human being, the radiant “I AM” that restores the personality to beauty, balance, and divine purpose.

The Path of Resh teaches that the head must become a Sun, the body must become a temple, and the personality must become a clear instrument of the Soul.

The Sun says:

Rise. Shine. Remember. You are not a creature of shadow and reflection. You are a living flame of the Solar Logos, born to illuminate the world through the radiance of your awakened Self.

Ancient Ode to the Divine Sun

Oh radiant orb, celestial sphere divine, In golden robes, your majesty does shine. A sun priest's heart, with reverence aglow, Sings praises to you, as the ancients bestow.

Bathed in luminescence, a deity unveiled, Your fiery gaze upon the world has sailed. A cosmic dance, a celestial hymn, In your brilliance, our souls do swim.

From dawn's first light to twilight's embrace, Your warmth and light, a sacred grace. A charioteer in the vast sky's sea, Guiding all with divine decree.

O Sun, source of life, eternal flame, In your presence, we invoke your name. Bless us with your golden kiss, Ignite our spirits in celestial bliss.

As shadows yield to your radiant might, A sun priest bows in reverent light. To you, we offer prayers and praise, In ancient hymns, our voices raise.

Oh, solar deity, in splendor enthroned, In your cosmic temple, our spirits are honed. A timeless bond, our souls align, In worship of the sun, forever entwined.

When the Sun, ATU/Key 19 is thrown, it implies:

  • The querent shall experience gain, riches, glory and sometimes warmth of love.
  • Maybe called arrogance which is often a misunderstanding of their glowing self-confidence.
  • The querent might make great displays of vanity but this is only seen when accompanied by very negative cards.
  • The dance of the divine twins can also be considered a meeting of the soul (solar) mates.
  • However, this most esoteric and requires a Lover’s or Love card to clarify as an exoteric event.
  • Striving for the light.
  • Reconciliation with the shadow side and realization of the innermost (highest) self.
  • Vivacity.
  • Acceptance of Life.
  • Generosity.
  • Warmth.
  • Self-confidence.
  • Rational approach.
  • Sexual desire.

If ill defined by the surrounding cards, it implies:

  • Self-satisfaction.
  • Personality cult.
  • Delusions of grandeur.
  • Loss of confidence.
  • Frustration.
