The zodiacal attribution to the Thoth -ATU 9-The Hermit card is the sign of Virgo. Virgo is an earthly sign that represents the most receptive feminine form of earth and/or is a mutable sign of Earth. Virgo is ruled by Mercury and Mercury is exalted in Virgo as well. Mercury, a form of Hermit/Hades, is also the fiery messenger of Spirit, that has descended into matter, signaling the reintegration by Spirit into being. This is known as the "Formula of the Princess", the mode of fulfillment of the Great Work. Thus, the fertility generated by this event and that of Virgo itself is shown as the Green Wheat background of the Thoth Card.

Gothic Tarot- Key 9-The Hermit

The Hermit is a solitary figure, often displaying great aptitude for meditation and contemplation, and this is implied by the lone hermit figure of the Thoth Card and the Gothic Tarot key 9. The Thoth Tarot shows and elderly man symbolizing the wisdom of the ages. The Gothic Tarot-Key 9-The Hermit, displays a solitary Red Dragon, perched in a Pentagram. The Pentagram, implying the wisdom of the ages.

The Thoth Hermit carries a lantern, implying intuitive knowledge. Also in the center of the Hermits lantern is the sigil of the Great King of Fire, who is also represented by the Hebrew word Yod-the secret fire, which is the Hebrew letter of this Thoth Tarot card. The Hebrew word, Yod, also means Hand. Hence, the hand of the Hermit is displayed as the center of the card. The image of the Thoth- Hermit is also bent into the shape of the letter Yod while being cloaked in the red robes of Binah, the Great Mother in whom he gestates. Although Ibis headed, the Hermit represents a phallic symbol, even his hair represents spent sperm as does the fat wheat heads in the background. Which is also seen as the large spermatozoa image on the left side of the card. Crowley calls this Hermit Card the "climax of the Descent into Matter". [Book of Thoth-Pg., 89]. It is very important to understand the Sacredness of "Virgin" Matter, for you are the "climax" of the Decent of Spirit into matter. Above all things, Know thyself.

The Gothic Tarot-the Hermit, has only the pentagram as an arcane symbol. However, the pentagram is a symbol of both Man and Spirit-over Fire-Water-Air- and Earth. It seems to just be a pretty piece of fantasy art, that implies introspection brought on by being alone; However, the symbol of the Pentagram also shows "Spirits descent into Matter". In such a solitary state, one often is able to hear the wisdom of the Spirit/Mind by tuning out the babble of the brain. This is also called in magic, listening to the loud silence.

As previously stated: the Thoth Hermit symbolizes the Hebrew Letter Yod, meaning hand, and all letters of the Hebrew alphabet are combinations of this foundational letter. Yod is the first letter of the name Tetragrammaton (YHVH) symbolizing the Farther who is Wisdom, and the highest form of Mercury. Therefore, he is the Logos; the Creator of all worlds, accordingly his representative in the physical world is the spermatozoon which is illustrated on the Thoth Tarot card and the All Worlds by the Orphic egg, serpent wrapped and fertile. The figure of the Hermit seems to be staring at the Orphic egg which is conterminous with the Universe, the egg is wrapped in the iridescent many-colored serpentine energy of Mercury.

The Thoth Tarot card, with its domesticated three headed dog Cerberus that guards the gates of Hell, brings to mind The Legend of Persephone, and I would suggest that the student read this legend to further understand this card. However, the 3 Headed Dog, is moving along with the Hermit for he is the constant companion of this ascetic . Cerberus represents the Trinity of Time. The Head looking forward, is the Future, the Head looking back is the Past and the head looking at the Hermit is the Present; Past, Present and Future, all accompany the Hermit in his solitude.

And for those who know the body to be a sacred temple of spirit. Can easily see the Hand of the Virgin, manipulating the Yod of the All Father, to ejaculate/express the Sun/Light. Its best to get over your fear of the body, and see it as the most crystalized form of Spirit in the Universe. And lady's, it is okay to own the Phallus, after all it is your creation! The body is sacred to spirit, by making it an "ownership" of man[ego} one has degrade and profaned what is sacred to Spirit. In Tantra Yoga, the magic of the Phallus and Yoni is well known, and the power they release together, forms all beauty, and harmony that is life in all the Worlds. One would be a fool to call the body a profanity, when the Divine Creative has worked so hard to "become physical". Stop being ashamed and embarrassed for having an unclothed (man's fear) body for by doing so, you profane the image of the Spirit. Love is Spirit's Law. Fearing the body and its sexual organs, is to serve only indoctrination and dogma, that builds slaves to fear while also ignoring the truth, the Divine Created you as its image.

Also in this Trump, is illustrated the secret of life and all its workings. For instance, Yod=Phallus=Spermatozoon-Hand=Logos=Virgin. Crowley says in his book of Thoth, "There is perfect identity, not merely Equivalence, of the Extremes, the Manifestation, and the Method." Therefore, the True image of the Hermit card, and the Virgin Yod/Hand, would suggest a sexual act that doesn't involve the female yoni/vagina, for it has impregnated time/space. And if you have any sense at all you will see the Hermit as the Yod/Phallus of the Original Impregnations of Dark energy and Dark matter, that became light. You should already know that the phallus belongs to the female and that she invokes it's fluids for use as a catalyst for manifestation.

The true image of the Hermit.

As you may note, in both Decks, ATU/ Key 9, is about the solitary person who walks the path that leads to the Higher Self and perfection of the soul. It is the image of the Adept-Magus and their detachment from the material world of man. The Hermit is sexual ambivalent yet He is a "he" as the Mercurial act of expression/ejaculation. S/He's often so far advanced in psyche, that most people find him/her difficult to comprehend. However, this does not deter their willingness to light the path for those who sincerely wish to know the depths of self. So "get over yourself, and get on with YOU, for impeccability is what we do!"
