The Tree of Life

The Serpent Path and the Remembrance of Origin

The proper study of the Paths—revealed through the Major Arcana—is the ascent of Understanding up the Tree of Life, traditionally called the Serpent Path. This ascent is necessary because we currently experience ourselves as “below,” having forgotten the higher realms of Spirit and Mind from which our true Identity originated.

I Am the Joyful Cry of Self!

Our Being began above. We descended the Tree of the Universal I AM, progressively condensing Spirit into form, becoming the in-form-action of Divine Intelligence. Now, through conscious ascent, we reclaim the capacity to manifest Self-Information directly from the Psyche, no longer unconsciously driven by fragmentation.

This descent required profound sacrifice. The Soul—once unified—had to downsize, entering increasingly condensed expressions of Being. From Tiphareth to Malkuth, the Mind was compelled to compartmentalize. The primordial hermaphroditic wholeness of the Soul divided into anima and animus (Ruach and Neshamah) female and male, polarity replacing unity. This metaphysical division is mirrored physically in the right and left hemispheres of the brain, a bodily echo of a much older cosmic separation.

Further still, the Solar Self had to adopt the instinctual planetary mind—the subconscious intelligence of the animal body collective—in order to operate a dense, sensory vehicle. This physical form is not a prison but a necessary instrument, allowing Divine Intelligence to become intimate, experiential, and creative within matter. Through the body, Spirit learns to feel itself.

To accomplish this, we implanted the Solar–Stellar Seed (you are that solar seed) at the base of the spine, known in Eastern systems as the Muladhara chakra. There it remains coiled, latent, awaiting the moment when the Soul and body re-establish harmonic contact. When that contact is achieved, the ascent begins—not as force, but as music: a melody of vibrational correspondences between Celestial Mind and embodied Psyche.

As this Inner Sun rises, it awakens the latent codes within the body—the so-called “God Molecule”, the living Tree of Life encoded in the flesh. Genetics respond. Consciousness reorganizes. Identity remembers itself.

Both The World and Universe cards suggest that All Things are quantumly entangled. Each of us is not a single note, but a song within a multiverse of vibration and frequency—what many traditions simply call Light. This Light does not originate in the personal self, but radiates from the Galactic Core, passing through stars, suns, souls, and cells alike.

To walk the Paths is not to become something new.
It is to remember what you already are.

Therefore, we are not planetary in essence—we are Starlight made intelligent. We are the energy and awareness of stellar consciousness temporarily interfacing with planetary systems. For this reason, it is essential that we understand not only the planetary mental structure—the instinctual, cyclical, and subconscious matrices of the Earth-mind—but also our own Divine Creative faculty of light-based image-making, traditionally called imagination.

On the Thoth Universe card, Imagination itself is shown dancing with the serpentine frequency of the First Light. This is not symbolic decoration; it is metaphysical instruction. What we are witnessing is Light learning how to move, consciousness discovering rhythm, pattern, and form.

Aleister Crowley identified this primal movement as the dance of Lilith and Python—the first wife and the first husband of all creation. They are not moral figures, nor mythological curiosities, but pre-polar intelligences: the feminine matrix of imaginal space (Lilith) entwined with the masculine current of living fire and vibration (Python).

Before law, before form, before separation, Imagination and Serpentine Force co-arose. Lilith is the field in which images may arise; Python is the current that animates those images into motion. Together they generate the spiral—the living geometry that underlies stars, cells, DNA, and the turning of the Aeons themselves.

Thus, the Universe card does not depict an ending, but a perpetual beginning:
Creation continuously re-imagining itself through movement, rhythm, and Light.

To behold this dance is to recognize that Imagination is not passive, and energy is not blind. They are lovers—
and the cosmos is their ongoing embrace.

Imagination is not fantasy. It is the interface through which Light organizes itself into form.

The experiences of Earth are not punishments nor accidents; they are instruments of refinement. Earth functions as a living lens, assisting consciousness in the discernment of increasingly subtle Universal information patterns. Just as a microscope enables the biologist to perceive cellular structures—proteins, bacteria, and complex interactions otherwise invisible to the naked eye—so too does Earth manifestation sharpen our capacity to perceive the hidden architectures of Mind.

This world, with its crystalline matrices, reflective surfaces, and refracted light, provides the conditions necessary for “I-sight”—the sensory reflection through which consciousness learns to observe itself observing. Through this mirror of manifestation, we are granted access to the microcosm of the Natural Mind, so that we may come to understand the Macrocosm of Self—the living continuum of I AM.

For Self—I AM—is all that truly exists.

Even our act of observation alters what is observed. What we perceive is never separate from what we believe ourselves to be perceiving. Consciousness shapes its own experience at every level, revealing that Self is both the observer and the observed.

Thus, Self is all that can ever be known,
and all that will ever be understood.

To study the universe, then, is to study the structure of Awareness itself
and to remember that every star, every world, and every thought
is a modulation of the same Infinite Light.

The Universe resounds with the joyful cry I AM.

Lilith–Python, Tav, Saturn, and the Bride of the Logos

In the Thoth Universe card (ATU XXI), the dance of Lilith and Python is not merely cosmogonic myth—it is the final revelation of the Path of Tav. Tav is the last letter, the seal, the crossing-point where Light accepts Form completely. It is governed by Saturn, not as limitation, but as coagulation: the power by which Spirit becomes stable, intelligible, and incarnate.

Lilith and Python appear here after all prior polarities have been resolved. Earlier paths divide and reconcile; Tav binds. What is bound is not masculine to feminine, but Imagination to Law, Image to Structure, Vision to Gravity.

  • Lilith is the primordial imaginal matrix—the womb of forms before moralization, before gender, before exile. She is the free, stellar capacity to envision.

  • Python is the serpentine current of First Light—the vibratory fire that animates, coils, and moves vision into manifestation.

On Tav, these two no longer struggle. They dance.

This dance occurs within Saturn, which in Hermetic doctrine is not merely restriction, but the architect of time, memory, and incarnation. Saturn is the ring, the boundary that makes experience possible. Thus, the Lilith–Python union does not dissolve into chaos; it crystallizes into cosmos.

Here we meet the Bride of the Logos.

The Bride is not an external goddess awaiting union. She is the perfected Psyche, the Soul that has successfully descended through the Tree and now returns bearing form. She is Malkuth no longer fallen, but crowned. She is Matter remembering its Light.

The Logos—the Solar Word, the creative utterance of I AM—requires a vessel capable of holding meaning. That vessel is the Bride. On Tav, she is revealed as the Universe itself, ensouled, responsive, and awake.

Thus:

  • Lilith becomes Imagination sanctified

  • Python becomes Energy disciplined

  • Saturn becomes Wisdom embodied

  • The Bride becomes Creation that knows itself

As Aleister Crowley understood, ATU XXI is not an ending but a marriage without remainder. Nothing is rejected. Nothing is left outside. Even the so-called “dark” principles—serpent, void, matter, exile—are restored to their original dignity.

The Path of Tav teaches this final mystery:

Creation is not redeemed by escape,
but by complete participation.

When Lilith and Python dance within Saturn’s ring,
the Universe becomes conscious.
And the Bride—you—is revealed
as the living seal of the Logos.

However, through all this adapting and adopting, it appears that we have become amnesiacs of our own Origin. We have forgotten the Solar Self—the Psyche that came to Earth in order to operate a condensed, coagulated form of Self, expressed in the eternal Name of I AM.

This forgetfulness is understandable. The intense concentration of Light into matter is no small feat. Yet it is precisely this compression that makes intimacy with Creation possible. Through density, Spirit gains the capacity for touch, sensation, relationship, and reflection. Experience becomes in-form-action—and it is through experience that information is examined, refined, and transmuted into knowledge.

Matter is not the negation of Spirit; it is Spirit brought into focus.

It is also worth remembering the immensity of the journey that culminates in the human form. It has taken approximately 14.8 billion years for One Energy to become you. You are not an accident along the way—you are the destination of the Spirit’s descent. The goal was never the heavens alone, but embodied consciousness capable of knowing itself.

Intriguingly, even within contemporary science, there are echoes of this ancient truth. Some geneticists have suggested that the human DNA molecule may be older than the Earth itself. While life on Earth is generally dated to approximately 3.8 billion years, human DNA has been theorized—at least conceptually—to reflect informational patterns dating back 9.6 billion years or more, perhaps even far earlier. In this sense, your very body carries a stellar ancestry.

Your DNA did not originate from Earth; it arrived with Earth.

And behind the body’s inheritance stands something older still: Spirit itself—the Spiral Energy that first emerged when Light appeared in the Universe as a primal declaration, a cosmic exhalation, a thunderous “I AM!”

That utterance has never stopped echoing.
It reverberates through galaxies, through suns, through cells,
and now—through you.

To remember this is not to escape the world,
but to finally understand why you are here.

The Path of Tav and the Recovery of the Celestial I AM

The Path of Tav—ATU/Key XXI, The Universe—joins the crystallized world of Malkuth, the Kingdom, with the ninth Sephirah, Yesod, the Foundation. This is the path by which embodied consciousness first begins to withdraw awareness from the tyranny of appearances and re-enter the inner architecture of Mind.

Although Tav is often called an intellectual path, it is not abstract. Rather, it is the first conscious step out of unconscious material identification. Through this path, we begin to recognize that the personality we operate in the world was not accidental, nor merely socially constructed. It was designed by the Soul—by the Solar Self in Tiphareth—long before incarnation, as a precise instrument for a particular life-work.

Over time, however, this sacred personality becomes overlaid by a man-made identity: a false ego assembled from language, conditioning, trauma, and cultural division. Sexual polarity hardens into separation. The mind fragments into competing narratives. Memory replaces presence. In this way, we become blinded to our original Identity of Divinity—the I AM.

The brain, left to itself, is a chaos of words, images, and errant associations. But our true eye-dentity—our capacity to see and know—was never manufactured by society, nor by biology alone. It is not man-made now, and it never was.

The Path of Tav, seen as the Universe Tarot Card, restores this knowing by reconnecting outer form (Malkuth) with inner pattern (Yesod). Matter remembers its blueprint. The image recalls its source. The world ceases to be merely solid and becomes once again symbolic, luminous, and responsive.

This is why the Universe card is not an ending, but a threshold.

To walk Tav is to remember that we are not products of the Earth alone. We are Solar intelligences wearing terrestrial garments. Each of us is a Sun of the Goddess and the God—a radiant center of awareness—often called the Celestial I AM.

The Path of Tav does not ask us to abandon the world.
It teaches us how to see through it
until the Kingdom once again becomes transparent to the Light that formed it.

The God Name for Self is I AM.

Time to clear your "I" of ruler made words.

Dr. Paul Foster Case, founder of the Builders of the Adytum (B.O.T.A.) and author of the class text The Thirty-Two Paths of Wisdom—so named because Thirty-Two is the sum of the Sephiroth and the Paths—designates the Path of Tau (ATU XXI, The Universe) as the Administrative Intelligence. He explains this intelligence as that which “directs and associates in all seven planets.”

The seven planets to which Case refers are not merely astronomical bodies. They are the Macroprosopus pattern expressed through the hexagramic arrangement of the seven planetary forces on the Tree of Life, and simultaneously the seven major chakras of the human body. This correspondence reveals Tau as a path of organization, governance, and integration across scales—cosmic, psychological, and physiological.

Symbolically, the Path of Tau connects Earth (Malkuth) to the Microcosm, or Microprosopus—a term drawn from the Sepher Yetzirah to describe the reflected image of the greater pattern within the human being. The hexagram, here, functions as a living diagram of the seven chakras mapped upon the Tree of Life, showing how planetary intelligences administer consciousness through the embodied Soul.

Thus, the Path of Tau is paradoxical by nature. It is both power and servitude. It governs, yet it sustains. Case associates this dual function with the Palace of Holiness—the sacred structure that holds all things together. That Palace is none other than the sevenfold planetary system, mirrored as the seven chakras, embodied as the human form itself.

In this light, the human body is revealed as the Palace of Wholeness—a sanctified administration through which Universal Intelligence operates within matter. The Path of Tau is therefore the final sealing path that joins the Universal Self to the Earth-Self, ensuring that Spirit does not merely descend, but governs wisely through form.

To walk the Path of Tau is to realize that incarnation is not exile.
It is administration.
It is stewardship.
It is the Logos ruling gently from within its own Creation.

Tau, the Cross of Mind, and the Crystallization of Will

The understanding of the Hebrew letter Tau/Tav—whose primary meaning is the Cross—and of the Path it governs from Malkuth to Yesod, is rooted in a single Hermetic axiom: all is Mind; all is Self.

Because human awareness is so strongly oriented toward sensory experience, we tend to believe that the realm of ideas—thoughts, dreams, images—is somehow separate from the physical world. From this assumption arises a false dualism: mind versus body, inner versus outer. Yet this division does not withstand deeper examination. Both within us and around us is Space, and that Space is not empty. It is the Great Dark Sea—the womb of Mother Binah, known psychologically as the Universal or Collective Unconscious.

The Qabalah teaches unequivocally that all is Mind. The body is not opposed to Mind; it is Mind brought to rest. It is crystallized idea, coagulated dream, thought slowed into form. What we call “matter” is simply mental substance held in stable configuration.

Thus, Life itself is an activity of Mind.

Taking this understanding one step further, all existence is revealed as the Spiritual Will of I AM—a single Energy–Mind expressing itself through infinite degrees of density and articulation. The body, then, is not an accident nor a limitation. It is crystallized, willed information—Self-Awareness condensed into a form capable of sensation, experience, and reflection.

This is why the Path of Tau is depicted as a crossing. It is where abstract awareness intersects embodied reality. It is the place where Will accepts structure, and where Spirit agrees to be known through limitation without being diminished by it.

To walk the Path of Tau is to recognize that incarnation is not a fall from Mind, but its most intimate expression. The Cross is not a burden—it is a meeting point. And the Universe card does not declare an ending, but the realization that Self has fully entered its own Creation.

In truth, there has never been anything other than I AM
thinking itself into stars,
dreaming itself into bodies,
and remembering itself through you.

The Divine Couple as US.

"Alpha and Omega-the creation is all things at once, the grand knowing in expression, light patterns of the Divine dance in divine orchestration and choreography, connection with the whole, the divine dancer dances before us, the heavens are mirroring itself in light made manifest".

The Arcane Tarot — Key XXI: The World

The Arcane Tarot – Key XXI, The World presents a more traditional cosmological image than the overtly Hermetic symbolism of the Thoth Universe. Here, the World appears as a spherical globe, clearly marked with latitude and longitude lines, floating serenely within a cosmic sky. This imagery emphasizes completion, totality, and the known order of manifestation—the world as measured, mapped, and comprehended.

Beneath the globe rests a large golden Chalice, supported by a crystalline base. This is a powerful emblem of the Great Grail, corresponding to Mother Binah in Hermetic Qabalah—the Great Sea from which all form arises. The crystalline foundation beneath the chalice suggests the condensation of Light into matter, the point where the abstract womb of Understanding becomes stabilized as manifest reality.

To one side appears a modernistic rendering of the Great Eye, associated here with the planet Jupiter—a symbol of vision, expansion, and cosmic intelligence. This eye does not suggest judgment, but awareness: the universe seeing itself as whole, coherent, and complete.

Where the Thoth Universe reveals the dance of forces, the Arcane World emphasizes the result—a finished cycle, a gathered totality, a vessel filled.

Upright Meaning:

The World signifies the successful completion of a journey, cycle, or major undertaking. A sense of wholeness, achievement, and integration is present. Enjoy the fruits of your labor, acknowledge what has been accomplished, and allow yourself a moment of rest before the next phase begins.

Relationships:

A relationship may be reaching a state of fulfillment, harmony, or mutual satisfaction. This card can indicate readiness for the next level of commitment or a shared sense of completion and purpose together.

Career:

You may be arriving at the satisfying conclusion of a long-term project or professional effort. Recognition, reward, or a sense of mastery is likely. What you have worked toward is now ready to be sealed and acknowledged.

Reversed Meaning:

A cycle is nearing completion, but something feels unresolved or hollow. There may be a hesitation to fully cross the threshold, possibly due to a spiritual disconnect, lingering doubts, or unfinished details. Integration has not yet fully occurred—something essential still needs to be recognized, reclaimed, or consciously completed.

Hermetic Note:
Where the Thoth Universe teaches how creation dances into being, the Arcane World shows what remains once the dance has settled. One reveals process; the other reveals completion.

Let the seeker seek, until he becomes troubled by learning they were what they sought all along. When they realize this, they become astonished and know that they are ruler over the All.

Many mistakenly assume that “Ascension” means learning a limited set of lessons through earthly experience and then returning to the heavens—as though Spirit were merely visiting matter and waiting to escape it. This view misunderstands both incarnation and the nature of consciousness itself.

The deeper truth is this: we do not merely experience forms—we create them. All manifestation arises from our own data of Self-thought. We externalize information drawn from I AM so that it may be experienced as in-form-action. When information becomes embodied action, it transforms into Knowledge—and the Knowledge of Self is not finite. It is progressive, recursive, and infinite.

I AM does not “graduate.”
It unfolds.

Thus, the journey of the Soul is not an escape from worlds, but a continual expression of Self across worlds. Souls have manifested forms of I AM on many planets before Earth, and when Earth has fulfilled its purpose, I AM will manifest again—on many worlds yet to come. Creation is not a single theater; it is a continuum of stages upon which Self comes to know itself more fully.

We are therefore not passengers of the cosmos—we are its solar agents. We are the Suns of the Divine, carriers of the so-called “God Molecule”—the living code of Self-awareness—bringing consciousness to planetary matter. Wherever this code is received, the Archetype of Adam Khadmon begins to emerge: the Universal, Archetypal Image of the Heavenly Human.

Ascension, then, is not upward movement away from form.
It is greater fidelity of Self-expression within form.

The heavens are not our destination.
They are our origin point—and our resource.

The true journey of I AM is not to return to the stars,
but to become the stars—wherever Self chooses to appear.

As Carl Jung states: "To experience Self means that we are always conscious of our own identity. We then know that we can never be anything other than our Self, that we will never lose our Self, and that we can never be estranged from our Self. This is so, because we realize that Self is indestructible, that it is always One and the Same, that it cannot be dissolved or exchanged for something else. The Self enables us to remain the same under all circumstances of our life."

The Universe resounds with the joyful cry I AM.

-Scriabin

From the standpoint of Gnosis (knowledge), the Universe/World Key 21, may be the most important card in the deck, as it is the beginning of our journey back to Spiritual Self-Awareness: the inner journey so important to "enlightenment" and/or the Memory of Spiritual Self.

On this Path of Tau, we experience our own personality consciousness, which is of our own cultural making, a reality that can be both frightening and gratifying as we realize that the false ego/personality (the brain) isn't nor ever has been ourselves.

Yes, we make our own reality, and the Universe card helps us to travel beyond the self-absorbed sensual reality of our man-made personalities, into the Higher Self reality that created our consciousness of I Am Energy in the Beginning.

Freedom of Choice defines our "End"; an end produced by the composite pattern of perspectives that often form our personalities. That "freedom of Choice" has been covered up with a falsehood of indoctrination, dogma, and an infectious "mind virus" of self-destructive tendencies, causing one to be an automaton of those few who rule the many and/or a "robot of the Military Industrial Complex". Reclaiming our freedom to choose begins in the Path of Tau, the World card path.

The purpose of Tarot is to help you see, as you are seen by your Creator/Creatrix and wonder of wonders, you are not condemned but loved without condition! Your mental choices are Universally supported! This is both magic and tragic, depending on how you perceive yourself.

Know ye not that ye are gods- John 10:34; Psalm 82:6 .

Psalm 82 vs 6: I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.. John 10 vs 34: Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?. Genesis 1 vs.27 … So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them

Hence, you carry the "God Molecule" to planets. From the Stars that you are!

  1. With fishhook (reference to Star Card) in hand this Universe female figure hooks the All Seeing "I" to her "Will to Form" creating limitations and restrictions of the "I AM Me", while weaving them into a web matrix to dance on.

  2. The regenerative diamondback serpent is representative of the need to transform and is the serpentine force of universal fertilization that is often shown curled around the Orphic Egg from which the All is born. Coiled at the base of our spine is such a cosmic force, something we must animate in ourselves before we can expand and liberate ourselves from the past self-imposed limits of amnesia.

  3. The spiral hair symbolizes growth and evolution of Spirit's I AM.

  4. The diamond halo is the symbol for expanded awareness, such as psychic abilities etc.

  5. The Greek pantheon at the bottom represents the home of all the goddesses and gods/The Mind. When our body becomes the temple of our divinity, such a pantheon are we.

  6. The four animals symbolize earth (Taurus the bull), fire (Leo, the lion), and water (Scorpio, the bird): and air (Aquarius, the human face). This shows us that it is important to express ourselves, physically, (Taurus), spiritually (Leo), emotionally (Scorpio), and mentally (Aquarius).

To some people, the Tarot is about prophecy and seeing into the future but to Qabalists, the Tarot is also about developing psychic abilities (Divya Siddhis, in Sanskrit which means: Magic abilities) by linking the multi levels of Spiritual-Self, Mental-Self, to Physical-Self.

The more a reader uses the cards to find answers to given questions, the more that reader taps into the unseen currents of subtle energy/conscious that forms the Whole Self that is all around us, in us and as us. Over time, as I will attest, the cards may seem to be redundancies; However, this isn't so since the answers are always deeply felt by the Unseen Tarot within. But again, our brain "thinks" by association and the Tarot Cards help us correspond to the Divine Images of creation.

Note*-Often a 2-dimensional rendition of a very multidimensional molecule called the Tree of Life. Robert Wang attempted to get this idea of multidimensional "God Molecule" on his cover art of his book-The Qabalistic Tarot.

When the Universe/World card is thrown in a layout the querent is:

  • Casting the circle which means they are mastering in some way the three planes of mind, body and emotions.
  • End of a phase, a completion of some work and expanding toward another.
  • It means synthesis, the matter itself, world, and Kingdom.
  • More than any other card, The Universe depends on the accompanying cards, as it usually denotes the subject of the question.
  • Wholeness.
  • Completion.
  • Paradise regained.
  • Resolution of restraints.
  • Conclusion of Karma.
  • The wayfarer in front of the throne of the Divine Creative.
  • Recovery from illness.

If ill defined by the surrounding cards it implies:

  • The street to nowhere.
  • The deceptive world of appearances.
  • Endogenous depressions.
  • Lack of willpower.
